For those looking for songs to practice this with: check out the indie group Omni. The singer is also the bassist and most of their songs are quite playable if you're singing/playing as a result.

It really isn't that hard. During the vocals the bass line is all 8th notes and a few quarter notes, so it smoothly flows along with the vocals. Now Boogie Wonderland is a real challenge if you're playing bass and singing any of the vocals. Any of the covers that I have seen of Boogie Wonderland, the bass player is only playing bass. In any case singing and playing more intricate bass parts is no doubt a challenge.

I was a lead rock vocalist for five years and then i switched to playing bass guitar. Man, I couldn't sing lead again. My brain was trying to think of many different things at once, plus the feeling of it. I really appreciate drummers having to do diff things with both hands and both feet. I now find some songs that are easier to sing and play bass, but it does get next to impossible for some songs.

Slayer songs are bass-singer compatible, because Tom Araya sings and play bass.
Now imagine drummers who can sing. DragonForce drummer sings backing vocals for example.

I find that the tighter the bass riff the easier it is to sing over it. An example would be a song like Hall and Oats “I Can’t Go For That”. But first get the riff down so we that you don’t have to really think about it then start laying the vocals over. Pay close attention to to where the melody coincides with where the notes are for each bar of the song.
Initially, it will be a struggle, but your brain will eventually catch on. If the melody is in a high key, sing it an octave lower first so you don’t have to put energy and concentration into your voice so as to put equal focus on your singing and fretting, tempo and plucking at the same time. The use of a metronome, drum track or drum machine to keep tempo would be very useful as well.
I recently learned to play and sing “My Sharona”. It’s actually easier than it sounds. The real challenge is singing and playing in my upper vocal range without getting tired.

I'm by no means a lead singer, but I do the odd backing... which sometimes can be even harder than the lead part!
I find it to be a bit easier to play bass and sing when I'm using a pick - opposed to fingerstyle. Having that auto-piloty up/down motion going all the way throughout a song, much like a guitar player, enables me to concentrate on singing more. That way, I "only" have to take care of fretting the right notes...

For the longest time, I wanted to play "Driven To Tears" by the Police. Like many Sting tunes, the lyric pattern is counter to the bass line. I would try and try and try and try, but I could never get the hang of it. At one point, I had to learn it because I was in the process of starting a Police Tribute band, which never came to be cause we lost our drummer when he went on tour with his main group.
So the band never made it, but I did discover a neat trick that helped things fall in place. The bass line goes "Da da da Bum bum Da da da Bum bum etc...". What I did was take the bass line, or phrase, and strip it down to only the pulse note, which is the first "Bum" in the phrase. Then I would sing and play only that pulse note so I could get a feel exactly where the pulse is played in relation to the lyrics. Once I got that timing down, the song came together pretty quickly.
That might not work for all songs, but it did great for me there.

  • @zaxapitsa

Billy Jean works fairly well, cause it's a repetitive line and the rhythm isn't hard to make automatic, but with more melodic lines... I feel I have to practice a song like a hundred times more than I usually do on guitar. I need to get the song so damn right I could play it in my sleep. It's so much extra practice it gets to one point where it's not even worth it, I rather exchange the instrument or have another person singing it. Anyway, the thing you said about piano is a good tip, that's exactly what I do.

But thinking about it, i never considered drilling a pattern, I'm still in improvise head jumping around chords and scales which i find distracting on bass, i should reign in and choose a simple pattern and drill it. So i can sing to it and not think about, untill my bass playing gets better.

Plenty of easy songs to practice singing while playing bass to, ex. try Petty's vocals on "Stop Dragging My Heart Around" while playing that very simple, time-keeper bass line .. at first, avoid runs, just fill with higher octave notes .. that awkward, "counter to the rhythm feeling goes away with practice, and then, more practice ..just my experience..many similar songs,
