He is in Congress because 51% of the voting public in Long Island voted for him. A total of about 275k people. He ran unopposed as the Republican candidate because the local GOP canceled the local GOP primary. He still had to beat a well-known local liberal Democrat with a long history of liberal activism and legitimate experience as a congressional aide and activist lawyer. He did not just sneak and lie his way into Congress. He basically took advantage of the swing to the right in NY that Trump started combined with an opponent and a political party who clearly was too distracted to present a serious opposition to him. The Republicans in Congress are privately laughing their asses off with regards to this entire situation. It just goes to show that there are serious consequences to aspiring politicians in terms of running as a Republican vs a Democrat. The people who elected Santos are blaming him, but everyone else is blaming the Democrats themselves for losing to this guy as well as the LI Republicans for electing him. The GOP as a whole is making out like a bandit. Sure there will be some schma attached to them behind Santos' credibility issues but that schma was already there.
The point is that political elections are not about truth, honesty, the American Way, the economy, National Defense and all that crap. Political elections are about WINNING ELECTIONS. You don't win, you have no influence on policy. You don't get to vote on new bills coming before Congress. You get no committee assignments. You're nothing more than the side that lost.
The US government is all about giving the winners the chance to run the country for a while. The GOP voters can bitch about Santos winning under a false pretext. But he won. So what is the real lesson here? Better to lie and win and run the country than to be honest and lose and get kicked out of the country. You want a "meritocracy"? There you go.

I believe Al resigned because he didn't have the time to both fight the erroneous charge and serve his constituents. He was framed in my book. One only had to listen to his response, genuine compassion, to know he was not guilty of what he had been accused.

Eventually GS will have a nervous breakdown (or fake one). The damage PL's leave behind is the complete loss of trust by the ones who loved them, and the inability to ever fully trust someone again. My heart goes out to Pedro. He was so young to have this happen. I didn't find out for sure (with evidence) until 5.5 years of marriage, 2 kids, and 2 assaults (for catching him in the lies) later, at age 27.

People decide to run. Local party organizations vet candidates. That system failed for his district. Most people give benefit of the doubt too much. Most people do not assume the worst in others.
Unfortunately if you are part of your local party, your job is to find out what could cause your candidate to lose. You need to know about everything bad or embarrassing they have done. Someone else will find out.

You people just aren't getting it. 40 years ago the GOP was the party of Reagan and Gingrich. Both ruled the party with an iron fist during their time in charge. Reagan came from the governorship of the GOP in California where he ran a Latino pogrom, where he literally ordered local LEO to round-up all "Latinos" in the state and ship them to Mexico. After he was shot, and was mentally "checked-out", his wife conspired with the GOP leadership AND the WH press-corps to keep his mental-state a secret from the public. She essentially ran the country during his last 2 years in office. Mr. Gingrich, with his pompous "Contract with America" was a serial philanderer (set loose in DC where he was notoriously unfaithful to his wife who was dying of cancer and who he tried to divorce during her treatment) who came up with a serious (and very public) plan to seriously honor the public statements that members of the GOP made to the electorate.
How's that worked-out?
It's one thing to make a promise, yet another thing to actually uphold it.
It's a third thing to make a statement that you claim to be fact, yet another thing to actually prove it.
What was the problem here? Far too many people taking a GOP candidate AT FACE VALUE.
Who should ALL have known better. Truly I doubt that any of them actually read his resume before they voted for him. A lie or two here or there, probably sneak by when told to a sympathetic audience. It's the sheer totality of the lies that Santos has told that really started this fire. But talking to him now is the same as talking to him then. Why would anyone believe that anything that he says is true?
THEY WANTED TO BELIEVE THAT WHAT HE WAS SAYING TO THEM WAS TRUE. It's called "campaigning".

Maybe what the LI voters really need is a "voters convention" by which they all unofficially vote for the candidates and then they can all review the outcome and then decide what their vote is going to be for the real election? Like a mulligan?
I challenge every district in every state to learn from this experience and simply put another election into the pipeline as an opportunity to see who the front-runner really is before the election and give yourselves a chance to "try before you buy". This is America in 2023. The lesson is right there. Start a fucking Facebook page or something, Use the technology at your disposal. Show that you actually give a shit about your local election and your local congressperson before it's too late to undo it.

Here’s what I can NOT understand. We’re talking about a high government position, so when any particular person decides they are going to run for Congress, why is there (APPARENTLY!) NO background checks. All of this CIRCUS (and public money/time/interest and airtime - both before and after) could have been avoided. The lies would have been exposed BEFORE people voted. This type of situation has always been possible, so I’m not understanding how no one thought to do the same background checks that SHOULD be sought out as a qualifying/disqualifying method prior to waisting everyone’s time with this BS now!
