FILM DESCRIPTION:
One of the biggest artists in hip-hop, rapper Jay-Z surprised fans in 2003 when he announced he would retire following the release of his hotly anticipated collection The Black Album. In November of 2003, not long after the album hit stores, Jay-Z staged a special show at New York City's Madison Square Garden, in which he performed alongside some of the most popular and influential acts in hip-hop and R&B, including R. Kelly, Beyoncé Knowles, Mary J. Blige, Missy Elliott, ?uestlove, Pharrell Williams, P. Diddy, and more. Billed as Jay-Z's final solo performance (though he would stage a collaborative tour with R. Kelly in the fall of 2004), Fade to Black is a concert documentary that captures both the action on-stage and the celebration behind the scenes; the film also features an inside look at the making of The Black Album.

Bilal Jones He already knew it was fire, the beat was done already. Funny part about this scene is Jay Z passed on the Ludacris Potion beat and took this beat for Dirt Off Ya Shoulder. Timbaland knew it was hot that's why he played him all these beats he didn't like in the beginning and when Jay Z heard it he dumbed out. The genius of Timbaland right there.

He recorded this song "on the fly", as in he never practiced it and just heard the beat and fucking did it?
He will have written the song previously but with no beat in mind, then heard this beat and decided to use that rap. He probably recorded it a few times and tweaked bits to suit the beat
Different rappers use different methods in making in their songs, virtually none will just say what comes off the top and make it a hit, not full songs anyway, the odd line or two. Some Rappers say like Kanye like to be in control of everything, he will make or be very involved in every aspect of a record. Jay-Z's style is to constantly think of rhymes in his head and probably doesn't write them down very often. He will hire a producer, like Timbaland, to show him what he's been working on adn then pick the beat he likes best then go in the booth and record the rhymes he thinks fit best over the beat. One of the features that makes Jay-Z's signature style and adds to his artistic style is that he will do it in very few takes giving it a raw finish

ixICocoIxi You're right because Jay Z talked about his way of writing in the Reasonable Doubt Documentary and said he would just remember rhymes in his head and he has become an expert of it. This is why when he comes back from being away for a year or from his last retirement he still had rhymes and that's why in this video you see him switch to a totally different subject matter and use totally different bars. If I was his engineer I would record everything he spit and just keep that shit in a vault.
