  • Our biggest snow storm of 2021 came in February and the John Deere 310 SE had no trouble moving snow from the center of our large driveway. In this video I move a bunch of snow at our house, my brother's and my parent's house with my backhoe and we have some good fun while doing it. There is also a few great shots of the John Deere 755 Compact tractor using a 59" Snow Blower as well. It was a fantastic snow day full of lots of fun snow moving activities.

    Neil... that was a beautiful wonderland... portrayed in your most excellently produced video.
    Watching you steer with the brakes brought back memories... of my most educating and excruciating day at work. I remember every detail...
    It is a hot summer morning. I have just finished cleaning the milk barn and equipment. My overalls are soaked except for the legs. They are stuck down inside my black rubber boots. I have no shirt, hat or socks on.
    I’ve been up since 4AM so that I could do the chores and get to my neighbors house by 7. Being used to farm work, I think nothing of the 1/4 mile walk across the fields, creek and dirt road to get there.
    Once there, he puts the Thermos of cool well water and paper cups in the back of the flat bed farm truck. I climb on the 8N Ford tractor, lift the 3 row cultivator on the back and head down the road.
    About a mile and a half ahead is a soybean field that needs cultivated. I am 14 and have never tilled ground with a tractor. Most of my experience has been transporting hay wagons, pulling logs, etc. with our Farmall tractors. They don’t have 3pt lifts. And, they have narrow front ends. In addition, they have a steering knob on the wheel to aid in quick turns. I’ve spent the past 15 minutes getting used to the clutch, shifter and steering of this new piece of equipment. The one thing that I notice is that every time I let out the clutch or hit a bump, the weight of the cultivator lifts the front tires from the ground.
    In the field, the farmer explains that the rows are just wide enough for the tires and cultivator shoes to fit between them. His expectation is that I plow out the weeds, not the beans.
    He gets in the seat. I crawl in beside him and balance my bony butt on the fender. My spine is positioned so that its tailbone is anchored on the bracket where the work light used to mount.
    All set, we drive into the outside rows. He puts the tractor in 3rd gear and we start cultivating. As we approach the first corner, he stomps on the left brake. With my left foot on the floor pan, it is positioned perfectly so that the pedal comes down and... Well, that was the first insult it suffered that day.
    Even with my interference, the farmer maintains control and executes a perfect turn. Not one bean is bruised. Then he looks at me and says, “You might want to move your foot.”
    We complete two trips around the field and have 6 rows weed free without a single bean assaulted.
    He asks me if I have it. I say, “Yes, this should be fun.” So, I climb into the seat.
    As I rev the engine he tells me to slow it down when I get to the rocky part of the hillside. I bookmark that for later use. Because, I certainly don’t want to tear up his cultivator.
    I take off and he heads out. He watches until I am over the hill . Then he leaves for town.
    As I approach the first corner, I get my foot over the left brake and prepare for the turn. I turn the front wheels and notice that the tractor pays no attention to me. So, I push down on the brake.... the learning experiences on this corner... in just about 3 seconds... are burned into my brain like a brand on a cows flank. Here are just a few of them:
    1. Farmer repairs to the brake pedal spring included... using one with the extension force equivalent to a farm truck’s front compression spring!
    B. Because this farmers fields are all planted anti-clockwise... the tractor always turns left. As a result, the left brake is worn slick and the asbestos shoe is glazed into a ceramic strip. Why always left? (Can’t be NASCAR we didn’t even know what is was back then.) The row marker is broken off the right side of his planter.
    3. Once you blow the front end of the tractor through the first row of a curve... it’s too late. The cultivator has treated the beans just like weeds.
    Well, I finally got stopped. Then I repositioned the tractor around the corner and dropped the cultivator back into the row. As I’m heading for the next corner I re-live the last one over and over. Getting near it I come up with a plan... I’m gonna stand up so I can stomp on the brake and make it smoothly around the corner.
    What could possibly go wrong? Right?
    Gripping the steering wheel I pull myself into standing position... lift my foot from the floor board and stomp on the brake. The brake engages, squeals like a stuck hog and locks up. The tractor lurches left, my body pitches right. I can not turn the steering wheel because I have a death grip at the limits of my arm strength just to stay astride of this beast. The next 8 seconds rival any bronc riders accomplishment as I fight to assert control of the situation.
    Once I have the beast around the corner I stop... crawl off and assess the damage. You know Neil, I’d been brought up knowing it was a sin to curse... but, after looking at the destruction I’d wrought upon that corner... I said a few son-of-a-guns and shucky-darns.
    The lord was listening... I heard him say, “Hey idiot! Slow the tractor down on the corners.”
    And, just like that I learned how to cultivate beans like a real farmer.
    Now about that left foot... I mentioned that my toes had been bruised by my failure to anticipate an attack by the brake peddle. I think I also said I didn’t wear socks. I might have mentioned that I wore black rubber boots. But, one thing I didn’t mention was that the muffler of this tractor was located right beneath the left floor pan.
    So, the toe is aching... the arch is screaming every time I pound the brake... the top of my boot is baking under the blinding sun... while the sole of my foot is seared by a blowtorch every time it touches the floor pan.
    To find relief, I rest it up on the brake pedal. This unnatural position combined with the frequent violent stomps upon the brake pedal take a toll on my left leg.
    At noon, the farmer returns. I welcome the chance to seek refuge under the tree at the entrance. I shut down the tractor and try to hobble over to it. My awkward strides do not escape the farmers extraordinarily honed powers of observation.
    He greets me with a cup of water and says, “Cultivating beans’ll build up your leg pretty quick.”
    He hands me a sandwich and says, “Looks like you’ve done a pretty good job staying in the rows. You didn’t knock down too many beans on the corner.”
    I mull over a response as I chew my bite. After swallowing, I look down and confess, “I got kinda off track on the next two corners... before I figured out the brakes.”
    He grinned and said, “When you finish this up we’ll replace those left brake shoes.”
    Neil... it took far longer to tell this than it did to flashback to that memory. Now, if you’ll pardon me... I’m gonna get some aspirin for my left foot and leg’s sympathy pains.

      Oh boy, the learning experiences gained back then that kids today will never come to realize. What a fantastic story of learning, determination and triumph. Your employer sounds like someone that knows how to provide a good life lesson. I never got to row cultivate beans, but I did get to walk plenty of fields with hoe in hand while hunting the Eastern Black Nightshade plant. Your story and resulting foot trauma sparked that memory for me of walking to the field in the dark to start as the sun rose. We put bread sacks over our socks and inside our boots to keep the dew from soaking our feet. The bread sacks however still sealed in the perpetration, so we ended up with wet feet before we shed the sacks as the dew burned off. That was some valuable learning back then as we walked those fields just like your turning brake lesson. I wasn't seeing it as life altering at the time but I now know what it did for me in terms of perspective.
      Thanks for sharing a great memory and sparking one for me as well. My FIL has a 1939 9N and my Dad has a 196X 801 Ford Powermaster. I am familiar with the brake configuration and could picture it all perfectly as I read your words.
      I think I need to make a video about those old Ford tractors while they're still around here...

      @@digdrivediy I am not familiar with Night Shade. But, we have our share of denizens... Poison Ivy/Oak/Sumac, smart weed, saw grass... each one fiendishly adapted to dispense its own brand of hell!
      You are right... I never knew the social pressure or drug culture traps that today’s youth have to navigate... and am glad that I didn’t. But, having survived and benefited from navigating my youth... I am partial to the thinking that it was more wholesome and simpler.
      A look back at the old two wheel drive tractors would be a well received video... especially when done in your unique style.

    I don’t know if push boxes are conmen where you live.... but man that would make your life easy if you had a 10’ pusher on that machine

      Oh yeah, lots of push boxes around here. I could never justify one for just my yard. It would be so much fun to try one though. If I ever come across one on the cheap I might have to just see what it's all about. Thanks for watching!

    Great editing as usual! Where do you store all your videos in order to go back and find them? I am just getting started and I fill up everything with the huge video files.

      Appreciate it. I keep all my archived videos on external hard drives. When editing, I work off my 1TB SSD hard drive that is installed in the computer then once done with the project I move the raw files to an external to save space. When I need something from the external like the video clips you see here, I'll just move them onto copy them onto the computer for editing. I have everything organized by dump truck, snow, firewood, tractors, backhoe, etc... It's still kinda a pain though.

    I am your biggest fan I’ve been watching you since 20,000 subscribers do you think I should get a Brainly box scraper for my John Deere 320 I have a pretty big driveway and the gravel isn’t level I need your opinion on this what’s my dream tractor is a John Deere 755 or a 1025r

      @digdrivediy  Před 2 lety

      Hi Eli! Thanks for being such a long time viewer! I've never used the Brinly box scraper but I assume it is a sleeve hitch type design or 3pt type? I think a box scraper is a great tool to accompany any tractor so I think you would get tons of use from it. I obviously prefer a pull type grader box for maximum grading effectiveness. But if that's out of the budget or unobtainable then a 3-point or mounted box can be still very useful.
      I think if you don't have a box scraper of some type then I would definitely consider purchasing one if it's in the budget. Best of luck to you and thanks for watching!

      I don't know why I didn't think to get some close up shots of it. Duh! I will need to make it be a feature video sometime. Thanks for the comment!

    Will the johndeere 310se fit in a 10ft door?

      @digdrivediy  Před 2 lety +1

      Yes it will. Obviously you'll need to lower the boom to get in but it will fit easily.

      @@digdrivediy thank you! I'm looking into upgrading to a backhoe. Any suggestions for a starter unit say 15k?

    • @digdrivediy
      @digdrivediy  Před 2 lety +1

      @@AK-uy1vm I'd have to pick a 310 or 410 D or 310E or 310SE. The E will be harder to find at that price. The D was a good backhoe too. The C models are OK but I wouldn't get a B as they were really weak. If you're patient you can find a D or E for $15K. Good luck 👍🏻
