Leaf spring material is in my opinion the best material for making swords as it has already been heat treated and is flexible and resistant all at the same time. Almost like cheating the system. Well done it looks good.

In Japan, a special steel called Yasugi Specialty Steel is made based on the iron making method of katana. This special steel has the same properties as katana and is hard and elastic, so it is hard to break.
This special steel is used in various applications such as cutlery steel, materials for high-end kitchen knives made in Japan, materials for razors, materials for automobile parts, automobile engine parts, and aircraft engine parts.
It's not "special" steel, it's called Tamahagane, and is made from smelting iron sands. This traditional method causes many impurities to be included. The reason a katana has a flexible spine is due to differential hardening, by quenching the sword coated in clay, only hardening the cutting edge.
@@dfors2001 Iron sand and charcoal, which are the materials of tamahagane, have a low content of phosphorus and sulfur. Phosphorus and sulfur are impurities that make steel brittle. The low-temperature furnace tatara steelmaking method uses the difference in melting temperature of iron, phosphorus, and sulfur to remove impurities. Ancient craftsmen called impurities Noro. Phosphorus, which is an impurity of tamahagane, is 0.029%, and sulfur is 0.0026%, so there are less impurities than modern steel. Japanese iron sand contains vanadium, which reinforces steel. Yasugi Specialty Steel is a low-temperature furnace similar to the tatara iron making method. Iron ore and coal were used in Western and Chinese steelmaking. Iron ore and coal have a high content of impurities phosphorus and sulfur. The high temperature furnace had melted phosphorus and sulfur, so it was not removed. Since European iron ore contains a large amount of phosphorus and sulfur in steelmaking by the Bessemer converter, European iron ore was excluded in ironmaking. Iron ore in Europe and China does not contain vanadium.

Is it possible to bend spring steel without heating it? I made a knife out of an old leaf spring i found but the handle section broke - I had some guy weld it back together but now its no longer flat/straight. I have the means to "tweak" it but im afraid of snapping it.

I guess I missed the “forging” part… unless you count where he made the blade uneven thickness along the length of it, by taking out the bend the way he did.
His blade, he can do what he wants, but I’d be worried about actually using it with thin spots like that

He may have not "FORGED" it. But he forged an old rusty spring into a bladed weapon that he now doesnt have to buy when WW3 pops off.
