DMS giving that headphone some healthy taps. Proper man handling.
Beyer's one of the few headphone makers I really feel comfortable handling that way. They just last forever.

I like these type of videos... Sean from Zero Fidelity has a segment call "After the Hype" where he gives a follow up review after "living with a component" for like a year. He summarizes his initial take and then after living with the gear for a lengthy period of time he then gives an alt take of what changes in his opinion over time or perhaps something he missed/skipped in the first take.
I miss Metal , one of the few who had slightly different opinions about sound
I find it to be informative to have the frequency response graph (no eq). It’s not the whole story, but it can help us visualize the “V” shape you were talking about.
Oratory1990 has a graph for the 770
I'm so glad you came around on these DMS! The DT770 80 ohm has been a pure GEM in the metal crowd for years and one of my personal favorite headphones.
Hell yeah, they’re by far the best headphones I’ve tried for the more in-your-face genres of metal like thrash because of the elevated sub bass and the 200hz dip that keeps it from sounding muddy like bass heavy cans often do with metal. I prefer something with a little more soundstage for genres like prog, but nothing beats these for a fat, meaty, aggressive metal sound
@@squidwardstesticles5914 I'm getting the 250 Ω and I really enjoy melodic metal (like shadow of intent, lorna shore etc.) I'm very glad to hear that they are a good fit for that type of music, I was really worrying that I wouldn't get the same enjoyment out of my genre of choice!
This is my one issue with a lot of these headphone reviewers. They pretend like headphones are all equal with all genres of music. There is also a lot pretentious bullshit like hip hop or metal are not for "true audiophiles." 20 years ago i got a pair of HD600s from a friends recommendation, beautiful tuning, amazing vocals and detail, insanely boring for metal. I got a pair of DT770 80ohms shortly after, they complimented eachother so well. Breaks my heart that these "audiophile" characters can only parrot the bullshit from their echo chambers and not think critically about headphones as a tool like anything else, right tool for the right job. But hey, gotta keep tier list content coming.
I've been fighting getting a 361 for awhile now... I probably should give it a look soon...
I love my dt770 32ohm as a regular user, been using it for 5 years now, had to change the pad once though.
What pads did you change them out for? I bought 80 ohms version as my first pair of headphones because of velour pads. Avoided 32 ohms just because of pleather pads.
These are just a no brainer for studio use. I reckon that almost every studio budget or not have these laying around somewhere.
Dude I love your music scores! Do you make them yourself? Oh and nice vid on the headphones. Looking for a solid close back.
Beyerdynamic headphones are probably the best example that tactile feel and materials are not a proxy to indicate build quality and durability. Beyerdynamic headphones often feel a bit low rent and look homespun but my experience of various DT models has been that they are extremely hard wearing and well made headphones. Very comfortable too
Could you try to get a hold on the Focal Celestee or Aeon 2 Noire/Closed for a review?
I agree, felt the same when I tested them. They are ok but I ended up returning them and sticking to my HD 560s.
I love the 80 Ohm 770. Supposedly there not meant to be any difference between the 250 and 80 but in my experience the treble spike on the 250 is higher and more extended. Although there's probably more difference between a single DT 770 with old and new pads than there is between an 80 and a 250 Ohm. When those pads wear the sound changes drastically.
So far that's been my experience as well which is why I stick with the 80
@@metal571 hi! Your review on the 770 80 ohms was one of the reason I got them. I have them plug to a Fiio Q1 Mll .. but sometimes I think it lacks a little power. What amp would you recommend for them for a $100 maybe $150 ? Thank you ,!
Good Video, thank you very much.
I saw the AKG at the end, whats your oppinion? go for K-361 or K-371?
I heard that 600ohm , 250 ohm and 32 ohm are basicly the same set (more coilng on higher impedanse set) and 80 ohm version is more different construction.
Completely agree with your take. So many say this is a bassy headphone and I don’t get it. There’s a tiny bit of sub bass in there but it’s so pushed in the highs than the upper bass and midrange gets recessed. So it sounds very bright and precise and thin. I’m trying a couple other closed backs to compare (Shure and KRK).
I have the 250 ohm version and I feel it's a lot like you are describing, bass is there but not too punchy, highs elevated but not sibilant (you will notice badly recorded vocals). Overall I like them a lot and they are super comfortable with Dekoni pads.
How do you like the pads upgrade? I'm getting my Dekoni choice leather next week
I can't believe you prefer the K361. I guess people's taste do vary drastically. I love the DT990 Pro for example and I can remember you weren't too fond of those either. Guess I gotta try these DT770s then.
Yeah he’s wack
Is the 1990 a worthy upgrade sound wise over the 600 ohm 990? You seem to like Beyer stuff (me too) and I see a lot of potential with their stuff with the addition of EQ modifications. The 990 (600 ohm) already sounds like an HD800 (sharper but with some notable improvements like more natural imaging) to me with some EQ. I'm just wondering if the 1990 has less harshness above 10K (990 has a bit too much "air").
The relative flatness above 9-10K is a very interesting choice of tuning for the treble in particular because it kinda shifts the soundstage in front of your face in a way that's more natural than the stretched sounding HD800.
hey DMS I checked your headphone ranking google doc and I didn't see the updated ranking of the 770 in this, only the 1770!
I have myself tried DT770, DT880, I loved both of them for their fantastic smooth sound quality.
For bass response what you recommend??
I have hd58x wanna buy dt770 is that worth??
@@towsifshahriarshovo They're quite similar in the bass, nearly same. But do a switcheroo in the mids/highs, where 58X is mid-forward and 770 is highs-forward. 58X have better quality on the highs by a bit (more natural), but they don't stand out as much. If 770 and 58X had a baby it would be perfect.

Can you review the Sennheiser GSP 600? Since you reviewed the TYGR from Beyer?
exactly what i tried to explain to you some time ago but you replied a little bit arrogantly to my comment :D. But it is good to admit a mistake :). What close backs in ur opinion have better soundstage than the dt770? Because i found the soundstage on the dt 770pro 80ohm almost comparable to the stage of the sundaras... And in my opinion the 250ohm and 80ohm version are tuned differently thats not just due to the impedance difference.
Hello everyone,
The black background thing he has at 0.25... what is that exactly? It caught my attention and haven't been able to stop looking at it lol.
Thank you to those who take the time to respond.
It's really cool looking and on the wall behind him in the rest of the video. I think it's acoustic baffling.
I know these are two different categories but I've used many different pairs of iems and earbuds but never used any over ear, recently most used earbuds of mine are the Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 2 but I want to try something new, how's the sound compared between DT770 PRO and the true wireless 2?
DMS, how does the 361BT compare to the wired version? Is it worth buying?
Thought this was going to be a Phantom post mods video. :-D
funny, I always knew AKG for their messed up tuning. I never heard an AKG that didn't massively falsify the sound (in a bad way)
same here, but the k361 is an exception.
The K371 and K361 isn't Austrian AKG, it's just a brand name now owned by Harman and Samsung.
Can you make a revisited for Focal Elex? Are they ok without QC issues?
NASA Never A Straight Answer
I bought the 80ohm version because several people said it had the most bass of the different ohm models. Sadly the bass is anemic on my pair. I’m driving them with a fiio k5 pro that has plenty of power. The mids and highs are fine I just feel the bass is lacking. It has the factory pads on them. Any recommendations on pad swapping to add more bass?
You might want to try doing the 'dust cap' removal mod first, since Beyers usually sound like trash with almost all other pads.
Basically, open up the headphone and pop off the dust caps from the backs of both drivers. This will open up the bass a bit more.
@@iridescentgherkin Do you mean remove the foam insert that covers the driver or the membrane underneath the foam? Example of both are in this video
czcams.com/video/Miyh_zISGZA/video.html
@@djsoulfilter Nope. The foam insert that goes infront of the driver actually attenuates treble and makes the bass louder - you definitely don't want to remove that.
I mean, remove the black retainer ring that holds the foam, then take out the entire white baffle that holds the driver.
Then, at the back of the driver there is a cap that might be glued to the back of the driver.... but it's like hot glue, so the seal is easily broken.
It should look like this cdn.head-fi.org/a/9638773.jpg
after the mod is complete.
Try the pleather pads from the 32ohm version. I tried the both the 80 and 32 and found the 32 to have a lot more bass.
@@Locus_Red thanks. Just got the pleather pads and these cans now have some decent bass.
I suppose they're so popular (especially for professional use like studios and stuff) because they sound good enough, detailed enough, have a good enough resolution for more intricate work and you can still enjoy listening music with them while being just built like a tank. They're basically indestructible. Change out the ear-pads every now and again and give them a new head-band-wrap after a few years and they will just last forever. Even the cable is super super sturdy. And if you happen to break your cable there are many guides on how to replace them. If they had replaceable cables they would be so much better, but maybe you need a weak point somewhere, otherwise there would be no need to producing and selling them at one point. So if you're thinking about getting the DT 770 80 Ohm: Save some money and buy them used and order a new set of cushions. And you probably can give them to your grandchildren at one point in the future, you can buy every single part of these headphones separately, even the plastic headband slider-thingy or the clamping ring for the ear cushions.
As I listen to this on my DT 770 80 ohm, I cannot agree more. The main reason I went for these over anything else is the build quality. I don't mind the colder sound, I love the fact that if my cat knocks them off my desk, they do not care at all.
What does colder sound mean?
@@ACE112ACE112 usually, lack of bass around 100-150hz
@@mrrrka ohh i thought warm-cold was meant to describe the mids and bright-dark is meant to describe the treble
Mind helping me clarify that?
I just returned the 770pro 250ohm. Extremely v-shaped and complete lack of nuance in the the treble. I'm considering the DT1990pro but I'm also somewhat hesitant after this experience
I own a pair of KB EAR Larks (has frequency response similar to the Moondrop Blessing), Fiio FA1s, and Jade EA1s.
Would you like me to send them in for a review?
I have the 770 250 ohm but for most of what you say I think it’s pretty simular to the 250 ohm. Maybe the word ‘little’ is where is differs. I hate the boosted sub/dipped mid lows and mid highs and boosted high’s. Very v-shaped indeed, I prefer the 880 pro over the 770 250 ohm. The 80 ohm might be a bit better than the 250 ohm, have no experience with the 80 ohm myself.
It's so weird.. I had the 80ohm version for about a year, and mainly only liked them for their comfort but had some things I couldn't get over with the sound.
I sold them, then a friend swore the 250ohm version sounded "different", so I tried it and BINGO! the 250 had less recessed mids, and a smoother bass response.
I guess it's all down to preference.
250ohm is better on DT770 Pro. Love DMS but he got a bad test unit or didn't do due diligence testing it long enough.
These headphones require what some people call "burn-in", or more accurately, getting used to. Only because so many other headphones MISS on a different kind of "harman target" or color that these have achieved. In spite of being "V-shaped" it's a different kind of V from what you think that means -- it's almost like it's photoshop cleaning up a dull raw photo with contrast processing. It seems to somehow correct for all the most common problems in recorded music. When you get familiar with this new "DT target" instead of the Harman target, you actually find it to be quite neutral and working well in all genres. Then it's nearly a perfect headphone and not as thin/cold as you might think. Even so, all headphones have to have some kinda double edge sword and if it doesn't shine as well as best-in-class 10-out-of-10 competitors in any area, it's probably mid-range warmth, "tonal soul", and highs being slightly "flat papery" compared to best-in-class in those 3 areas. But not bad, it's 7/10 in these areas. So you're not ANNOYED. Compared to other headphones that may be best-in-class in these areas but on some recordings sound "compressed", or "bloated", or "undetailed", or just off in some kinda way. I like that they're good for rock, metal, jazz, classical, gaming, like wow!
What's even more amazing are the DT 770 Pro's for giving all the comfort, space, sound stage, lack of claustrophobia, that you just can't get on closed back usually. It's not a joke to say it's hitting in the "average" rank among open-backed headphones in the price range. Closed back are usually decidedly worse in these qualities. So if you get only one closed-back for those times you need isolation from others (or isolate them from you), I can seriously recommend the DT 770 Pro.
bass isnn boosted in my oppinion its just that u can hear lower freaquesnsies
I thought it was gonna be DT 990 pro, cause i dont find it piercing at all when it came yesterday.
I was so confused why they are so many reviews there saying it was so fatiguing ang painful to listen to.
But, the mid bass to lower mid range sounds thick though making the overall sound too warm or some may say it is bloated or too thick / unclear/ bass bleeds.
What would you recommend for more detail listening
Which under 200 closed back would you recommend for imaging and staging (games)?
I hear myself those headphones just like in your description. I bought them month ago b-stock for 100 euros. I also have dt 990 250ohm, 880 600ohm and Akg 371. The 880 is really good with right kind amplifier. The 371 can easily listen from the phone and it sounds really natural with awesome sub-bass. Dt 770 sounds better for me than the dt 990 and they both require the same amount of power.

But still works for me when I'm trying not to annoy my wife in the early AM...
Curios if the 250ohm would have performed better ?
250ohm will give you more highs overall and more details on highs. Which is very annoying for daily listening. But can be very useful for monitoring purposes.
By the way, I have same impressions of dt770 80ohm. It's decent on low to mid volume. Just awesome. In mid to high volume sub bass become uplifted and a bit boomy. Fortunately I prefer to listen in low to mid range.
I'm pretty new to this hobby and this is one of the more common recommendations I get from people I trust. But I'm new to the hobby so maybe I don't trust the right people ;)
I'm looking for new headphones, just gaming and casual listening. Should I go with those or the hd560s?
PC38X
Deep in the bass is not "somewhere around 100Hz" It's at 200Hz. That's huge difference.
And don't complain about the soundstage. For a close back they have very good soundstage. Better than ATH-M50X or K371.
These are what I went with after having used Sony's MDR-V6 for a long time. I learned a little bit more just from experiencing something different. It took me a bit to figure it out but having more sound stage was what stood out to me along with the treble. All in all I'm fine with the purchase as they feel good even on a bald head and are built sturdy.

I used to own the 250 ohm version - It's true that they have a very unique sound and they sound amazing, when they work...
Unfortunately, for me, I remember the left cap/piece started grizzling/distorting only after a few days. I was mixing vocals and suddenly, the left side gave me this weird distorted noise.
I actually read on the internet that it happens many times with the DT models, people suggested to take the headphones apart and mess around with them but my fix was to pack the headphones in its original box and return them for a refund. Maybe others won't be so unlucky but if I can recommend a pair of headphones, go for the MDR-7506.

I tried the 32, 80, and 250 ohm Dt 770's together a few months ago. Really made me realise how great the 770 pros 80ohms sounds, and they are comfortable when using them for many hours
In my experience, both the 770 and the 990 (both in the 250 ohms variants) can be redeemed on a good tube amp (more power on the sub-bass and tamed treble). Considering the price of these sets, it is just crazy value (if you already have a tube amp that is)! And that would be the main advantage of the 250 ohms variants, since 80 ohms is too low impedance for tube amplification.
agree 100% the 250ohm on tubes are amazing, they need voltage
Any recommendations for tube amps? I have the 250 ohm 770s but I'm running them through a FiiO E10K, and in the future I want to upgrade to something that really brings out their full potential
>80 ohms is too low impedance for tube amplification
Can you help me understand what that means? What would be wrong with dt 770 80 + tube amp
@@ExtremelyTastyBread This is an EXTREMELLY technical (and thus super touchy subject within the audiophile community these days), so I'll tread lightly here and recommend that, if you really want to understand the nitty-gritty behind the "impedance matching" argument between amps and headphones, you should check an article by headphonesty titled "Headphone Impedance Demystified: Do I Need a Headphone Amp?" (not putting link here to avoid having the comment blocked). This is a long article, but one of the best I've ever found to explain this theme.
Having said that, the simplistic explanation (that can still be challenged depending on specific cases --specially with more modern headphones and amps) is that you'll get more distortion when you use a lower impedance headphone into a higher impedance source (amp). While 80 ohms is not exactly low impedance, it is still lower than what most tube amps put out (between 100 to 120 ohms). So, plugging your 80 ohms Beyer to a tube amp will not damage it, but MIGHT (extreme emphasis on "MIGHT") sound slightly more distorted, noisy and produce a lower "damping factor" ("muddy", loose, "boomy" or less precise bass) to people who happen to be more sensitive to that.
The very old and still generally accepted rule is that your headphone impedance should be at least twice that of your amp (which makes a 250 or 600 ohms Beyer great matches to a 120 ohms tube amp) for optimal sound that will preserve frequency response and, thus, sound cleaner.
Obviously, newer solid-state amps have super low impedance (close to zero in most designs these days), so plugging a high impedance headphone into a low impedance source/amp will not necessarily be a problem in terms of sound quality (the only downside might be lower volume). So, this impedance matching rule is much better applied to OTL tube amps than the much more prevalent solid-state IC designs we have today.
@@IOSam yeah I run HD 58Xs off of an Apple dongle plugged into my (Linux) PC EQ'd to Harman and the bass is very tight and precise, can't say I hear any kind of distortion at all even with the EQ

@@towsifshahriarshovo 770 all the way. Unless you hate bright detail in the highs, or warmth in the mids is yours #1 goal. 770 = comfort + sound stage , total best-in-class for closed-back.
@@towsifshahriarshovo Let me just put it this way: they are tools that, although looking very similar, are used for completely different tasks. A carpenter's hammer is not a substitute for an electrician's hammer, despite both of them having a handle and a bit at the end that can hit objects. Knowing your requirements and use case will inform the decision of which one to pick, just like with any other tool.
DT770 is a monitoring set, they're used by professionals in a studio environment to monitor a live recording, either while making music or for live broadcasts. The super analytical high-frequency range is very useful for picking up on any issues with the recording equipment, static, any adjustments that need to be made at the point of recording that are going to be difficult to fix later. Similarly, having that sub-bass extension is important because it lets you hear what you're recording all the way to the bottom of the frequency range, and for musicians it helps them follow the beat well. They need to reproduce the mids accurately, where most of the music lives. The studio environment informs their comfort, closed-back construction and repairability/durability. They also have amazing soundstage for a closed-back pair of headphones and subjectively they are quite fun to listen to. It's a purpose-built tool for ensuring your recordings won't suck in some way, but they are very far from a "neutral" sound versus the AKGs. This is the equivalent of getting what a cinematographer would see on their camera's monitor as they are shooting a scene for a movie.
K361/K371 are headphones are designed to replicate the environment of a sound engineer listening to a perfectly flat set of reference speakers in an appropriately sound-treated room in something you can put on your head. This is called the Harman tuning, and the idea is that the set will be reproducing the exact proportion of sounds that the person making the final version of the song heard out of their big fancy speakers in a big fancy room. This is the only guarantee you're getting: if a certain frequency is perceived at a certain loudness by the engineer, it will be perceived at the same loudness on these as well. You will get the exact same level of bass, mids, and highs. However, they don't necessarily replicate the technical nuances of a pair of speakers, such as soundstage, particularly well, neither are they especially durable or repairable. That's how you can get a headphone be this neutral for this cheap, they will lack in areas other than amazingly close adherence to Harman. Think turning your TV to "ISF Expert" or "Moviemaker" mode -- it's a good (and arguably essential) first start so your colors are not all messed up, but they'll not make your home TV suddenly be an adequate substitute for going to see a movie in a theater.
I personally have a pair of AirPods Pro 2s which are actually quite robust in terms of a "neutral" listening experience, so I much prefer to have a set with the tuning and characteristics of the DT770s as a "fun" pair, as there's very little that the AKGs excel at that the AirPods also don't do a pretty good job at. If you have no "neutral-sounding" headphones in your collection already, I'd probably pick the K361, or preferably try both of them out and see which one you like more.
@@thebaker8637 thanks for the reply. I recently bought Sennheiser hd58x sounds quite good honestly.
What are good Closed Back options for general/immersive gaming?
I’d suggest these for gaming with closed back (if you’re on pc otherwise get the 32 ohm version for console)
K361 or K371?
Where is the 250ohm review? pls
thx , not.
HOWEVER this specific unit is the older version of the 80ohm which leads us to the newer version which is plain worse
Which headphone?...
Hello mate I want to change headphones I want to hear music and play games I am In between dt770 pro k361 k371 and m40x what can you suggest me ?
DT 770 Pro
Do I need an amp for this or will the scarlett solo be sufficient? Complete audio noob here.
Definitely benefits from one. A dongle dac like the GO Link isn't enough. If y ou have something like the Fiio k11 DAC amp or above, probably enough, not sure. But SMSL C200 and Topping DX3 PRO plus will do
Maybe not too related to this video, but I am really wondering how the AKG K361BT stacks up to the normal K361.
Could you do a comparison or give a comment on the differences between the Bluetooth and the normal variants?
According to Oluv's gadgets they are much worse both wired and bluetooth.
Even Sean Olive says his "preference" is for the passive versions
And the k371 bluetooth version?
what year is it
2021
@@officerwizz I think he meant the actual headphone
@@tallsz559 It's a joke indicating that DT770 has been around for so long that is slowly getting out of touch from the new audio world.
@@tichy_ocean Wow, I had no idea how long it had been around. Still crazy how it is relevant today.
@@tallsz559 Yeah. They are ancient. It's a reason why they have been recommended for so long. They are good but I think people could do better with newer headphones.
Are there downsides to pay a little premium for the Bluetooth version of the AKG K361 ?
Yeah; worse sound.
@@dannybos7024 Oh, even when running in wired?
@@arigato7788 According to oluv's gadgets, yes. Get the wired version, it's great and comes with 2 cables
Interesting glasses you have there...
anyone else thought it would be the gl2000 lol
The thumbnail looks like youre holding a dingdong
Could you try to review the moondrop starfield?
I have one of those I could send DMS also if he's interested
@@metal571 that would be great, what are your thoughts on those?
I think I talked about it on Twitter way way back, but the short of it is, one of the best audio products under $100 I've heard
lil huddy gotta be u
The lack of body can also be heard in the 250 ohm version.
It's the lower mid/upper bass recession around 300 Hz or so that all the 770 variants seem to share. Takes away body from vocals for sure
@@metal571 Not 300Hz, 200Hz. And if you say 300Hz its not a bass region anymore, its midrange, basic of mixing...
Low Midrange goes from 250 to 500Hz.
I really am confused whether I'd get k361 or k371?
If you like bass, K371. If you don’t like bass and love dips in your mids and treble, K361.
