We used to come home from the town park bruised,scratched,bloody.
Backs of our legs burned from the slide.
We would roll down a hill in the trash barrels.

But sometimes you could go home with a heat burn, And it wasn't from the sun. Not directly anyway. 😆

No joke, I had a classmate in 1st grade that went flying off our metal swing set on the playground while trying to go as high as he possibly could. When he landed in the sand he received a compound fracture in his wrist. When we were back in class he called out to the teacher about “the red stuff” getting on his project. She flipped her lid when she noticed it was blood. I remember it like it was yesterday. Poor kid! That playground was the best though! My favorite was the concrete sewage pipes we had for climbing on and through. Talk about HOT in that Arizona heat. 😆
Our parents didn't even know where we were. We jumped on our bikes in the morning, came home for lunch, and then in for dinner. Then we go out at dusk and catch fire flies. Of course we stay within shouting distance. Those were the days.
I grew up near tons of lava rocks in the middle of no where. The neighbor kids and 6 of us would be out all night playing light tag with flash lights. Its amazing the things your do when you dont have ipads and your bored. Their were days where everyone would be covered in welts from crab apple wars lol
Dont forget drinking from the water hose. And making mud pies.
But i do prefer plastic slides to metal. Safer.
In our house, we had to stay within my mom's whistle. And that thing could make your ears bleed if you were close when she let it rip. We could hear her whistle over any emergency vehicle sirens.

We used to make sure to gain momentum on the swing, not to go around it, but to jump from the highest point and see who would land the farthest. smh. I still wonder how we never broke bones or wound up in the hospital.

Right! These kids can’t manage falling off let alone jumping. I have 3 of them 😅
When we jumped off the wooden seat swings we knew how to land. Those dumb rubber seats wouldn't let your butt go. And when we used the slide - wax paper - I even gave it to my kids on their first trip to the neighborhood playground. I didn't go with them. They were fine.
I used to jump off the swing for distance records, until one day my pants got caught in the seat itself. Nothing quite like yeeting yourself off of a rubber seat only to have it grab you on the exit and flip your face into the ground!
I remember playing yard darts. We would see how close we could get them to the other kid's feet. I was good, I don't have any scars. 😁 Those things were sharp. And the Mom sayings, I don't want to hear a word when you get hit with one of those. But my favorite is "if you break your leg, don't come running to me" lol I want to be young again
my great grandmother had yard darts unfortunely they were hidden when we were found playing the wrong way with them lol. Those things were weapons.

We played dodge ball. With slightly deflated balls, which would bend your nose when it hit you at about 300 mph.

I can still remember the pain in my arms from Red Rover…and the condemnation of peers if you were the breaking point.
He's soo funny. I laughed out loud alone. It's funny because it was absolutely true.
Oh, but the monkey bars. Such fun, and they were on plain old dirt. If you fell, you got hurt. The school nurse fixed a lot of boo-boos. Not many ambulance runs, 'cause we mostly walked it off. Ah, good times.
We don’t even have a nurse, we get blisters and just got used to them, king of the hill kind of thing.
Our playground was gravel. Then when you fell you got a nice pebble pattern on our legs and arms, maybe the face also, depending on whether you dropped off the monkey bars or were yeeted off the spinner, or roundabout, whatever you call that thingie that possibly killed more kids on the playgrounds than any other piece of equipment.
We'd sit up on top of the monkey bars and our teachers NEVER said a word! 🤣

@@solaveritas2 Oh, so true!! I took my toddler daughter with me to ride on it and the kids had it going so fast I couldn't hold on any longer and we both flew off of it. I was so scared for my daughter but we were both safe. Guardia angel was there for us that day. Never went on that again, not even alone..that
was too much to handle.
We were told not to come home crying. If you did get hurt and went home crying, we were yelled at. It was our own fault. Which it was. And we would be right back out there playing on it again.

I don't remember wanting to swing all the way around. What I wanted was to get the farthest after jumping of at the highest point. I also remember wearing shorts on those metal slides, bad idea but I did it anyway.

You have that correct. The kids who grew up with ‘trophy, everyone’s a winner years’, have apathy and depression and are glad for nothing to do outside of the house.
It’s interesting that I still experienced that as a millennial but in Moldova, former part of USSR. It was 1994-2000 and we still had metal slides, wooden and metal playground structures and climbed water pipes. Boys climbed garages because they were usually a separate structure- like a row of garages completely separated from buildings

Mama was a boomer baby...used to take wax paper and make the 16 foot slide faster 😅

The trick to making those metal slides slick was to toss a handful of gravel up it before you climbed. The dust would be dry lubricant, made for the fastest ride on the playground.
Exactly! Or I would sometimes take a handful of it up with me and sprinkle it down first. Made a world of difference in reducing the friction.
We took a small square of waxed paper to the playground. Made it smooooth and shiny!😊
Yes to all above! And then it would rain and there would be a slimy puddle at the end of the slide.

I was born in 1952. My house had the park right behind us with all the swings and the slides and the teeter totter’s in the monkey bars, so I’m totally enjoying your comedy because we had a great childhood not like the kids nowadays.
I remember trying to go down the slide and getting my skirt caught at the very top of the 10 story slide. Had to go home after school and explain to my mother how that happened. Kids back then in the '50s were tough as nails, even the little girls who wore dresses because that's what little girls wore back then. Talk about going down a hot slide, try doing it in a skirt! Nothing between hot metal and tender young skin. We'd throw dirt on the slide to help cool it down and also made it slicker!
autumn7ful Maybe 4th grade I swung up as high as I could, let go and jumped. Landed wrong, fractured my elbow. It was the last day of school!

I'm 1952 also. I was scared of the playgrounds, only sitting in and twisting in the swings. But I remember them fondly.

Young kids, just know that there is A LOT OF TRUTH in this show. It's ALL TRUE!
Yep! 500 degree Fahrenheit slides, monkey bars that would destroy you on the way down if you slipped, the merry-go-rounds that would sling you off into orbit if you didn't puke first, and the one nobody has mentioned yet - the seesaw which would give you a vertebrae fracture when your "friend" jumped off. And don't get me going on suicide missions down the sledding hill in the summer in a homemade go cart made from scrap wood, baby buggy wheels, a piece of rope to "steer" it, all held together by 4 rusty bent nails.

this is so true . my sister was on a swing in the 80s and she swung so high , she flew like superman off the swing . but she was fine . probably a bit of scratch and that was abt it . the good thing was the playground was filled with grass.
Excellent, lol, Excellent! When the metal sliding board wasn't sliding all you had to do was take wax paper out with you and start buffing up that metal and you were speed racing to the bottom again!!
I grew up in those times,still remember a younger kid losing part of her finger sitting on the middle of the seesaw.
I recall sixth grade guy hanging by feet inside jungle jim...let go and head first into the bare pavement that we all played on and had fun!kid conked his head teacher&..oh. o.k.
Very funny! I'm pretty sure I remember people running around and shocking kids after going down the plastic slides during my elementary school recess. There's a big build up of static electricity after you slide down one of those. And monkey bars and things to climb on do help kids learn to balance. Learning to fall correctly should be included in physical education.

I used to slide on a rock behind our house. The butt got bruised but because we had no slides at home we continued to do it because it was fun.

Great routine. Grew up in 70s and 80s with metal slides, monkey bars, swings with big chains and flimsy plastic seats. Riding bikes all day, getting lost in the woods, building tree houses with nails and splintery wood. We had awesome neighborhoods growing up with lots of kids around. And we used to traverse the busy streets end of school year to the local zoo and park for a picnic and to ride bumper cars and other who-knows-how-long-ago-inspected rides.

You never see kids climbing trees anymore or a kid just sitting in one after climbing it to the best sitting in the tree spot.
We rode bikes down the rode knowing a barbed wire fence was. Great fun😂😂😂😂

I did that on a Shetland pony. I didn't know about the barbed wire... but he did. Luckily, the chicken feathers had piled up so high behind the coop that when he threw me off, it covered most of the barbs.

So so true, and we never gave safety a thought, we healed in a day or two. And that metal merry-go-round we got to going really fast. All back when kids could be kids. If we got hurt, it was called "growing pains" in the '60s (pre seatbelt days). Thank you, Roger, for pulling out the time machine. It was fun to travel back in time. Again, Thank You.
I remember around 1966, coming home from school and my older brother was in bed after an injury on the merry go round. He tried jumping on while it was spinning really fast, didn't make it and he was sent flying with his head hitting the swing set leg, splitting his head and needing stitches! 😬

We had a plastic slide and they can be dangerous too. Don't grab onto the under side of the slide or you will slice your hand open. If you are heavy it will bow and collapse in the middle. And if there was a chip in the slide and a piece of that was sticking out that would snag your shirt and would be nearly choked to death. And electric shock just by touching it.

Everytime I hear stories about the metal slide of death I swear I can feel the experiences as if I was just on one of those things. I am so glad I am a younger Gen Xer who got to experience the more fun and dangerous playground equipment. 😆
Metal slides are a nightmare. Plastic is better. But those days of biking alone were amazing.

Ah, yes. Dodge Ball...the game where if you didn't want to get hammered by the ball, you just learned to run faster! 🤣 We used to dare each other on the swing set to see who could swing the highest AND jump from the seat at its highest point. Our teachers NEVER once told us to stop and NO ONE DIED! We'd get that Merry Go Round as fast as we could get it to spin. No one flew off. I went to a rural school so our equipment was on dirt. We played TAG aka Touch And Go too. We played flag football with a skosh of tackle involved. Sadly, Dodge Ball and TAG have been determined as too violent to play and there are no more Merry Go Rounds because they too are considered dangerous. It's beyond ridiculous! We used to swing out of the hayloft and in mid-air hope we weren't going to overshoot that big hay pile. I know I did several times. We used to swing on a rope and land in the river. Let kids be kids.
My Grandma and Mom both used to tell overprotective Moms, "They bend before they break. Stop hovering." 😁

Yep, we had all that stuff too, mostly all on pavement though.
Lots of steel. We had an awesome merry go round. We would takes turns pushing or riding. We would get that thing spinning so fast, you could hang off the sides horizontally. I'm totally serious. I remember a couple times kids losing their grip and flying off, but they would be right back to do it again. Man, those were great times. I went back to the school years later and sadly , all that stuff was gone.

When he talked about going up the slippery metal ladder, my knee instantly started to hurt. And it was right in the spot that the step would bang against my knee when I slipped on the ladder. I remember that pain well! 😂

Born in 1962, I am so familiar with the metal playground. Our metal slide worked really well. It also had a hump in the middle so that when you hit it just right, your butt didn't touch the slide for a fraction of a second. 😂❤

My sister, my older sister, literally did fall swinging so high that she went right over and around fell onto the gravel had to be taken to the hospital. We weren’t sucky Poohs, like the kids are treated nowadays.
We had the flying gate & the flying swing. Dangerous & so fun. Split my lower lip open (bit it falling)on the metal monkey bars, 4 stitches. Still wear that scar with pride!! Use to ride the rollers (were the milk cans came down) at the local creamery on the weekend!!!
I went FLYING off a merry-go-round! I landed so far away, the kids cheered. Got some serious road rash 😂

We used to get strawberries on our legs and butt from the hot slides. Also the merry go rounds where we would hang off with our heads down, lol. We survived!!! Parents were hanging out socializing and smoking, they only bothered with us when we came crying. The good ole days for sure.
I remember swinging on the " swing set " and when I swung backward, I also leaned forward while in the swing.

This was GREAT and what memories! Born in the 1950s I grew up playing on all these things that could burn you, rip your skin off, break your bones or knock your teeth out. Good times! And because we weren’t content with just that we had a brook and an enormous culvert behind our house in “the woods” where you could go rafting into it in warm weather or sledding into it when the brook froze. You could go miles through that culvert and end up a town away and fall through the ice if it wasn’t solid enough. It’s fun and adventures todays kids will never have, so sad

Too funny. I was one of those kids that tried defying gravity on the swings, I however had a good grip but it was a jolt when the swing came down to a quick stop....and yes it was logging chain bolted to a plank.

We would take pieces of waxed paper with us to the park, sit on them and go down the slide to make it slick. Then sit back and watch other kids go rocketing down and skid along the dirt at the bottom.

Even though I was born in '99, I lived in rural Kansas with a park that was built in like the 50's or 60's right across the street from my house. And I had 8 siblings so there was all types of tomfoolery going on. There was a jungle gym completely made from metal that idk how many times I bumped my head on. And the metal slide was the best to go down in the rain because you did get shot like a rocket.

At recess, watched the kid go down the metal slide but not down the slide part... Straight down to the ground.. the concrete. Knocked him out, the rest of us surrounded him, thinking he was dead. Good times. 😖😵😬
