  • Helldivers 2's latest update included the Rocket Sentry which fixed A LOT of the turret's past issues. I finally got around to updating my guide with all the post-patch changes to the turret.

    Destruction value is how much "demolition force" a structure can take before it dies. Easy way to explain this, you know how prior to the patch the crossbow couldn't destroy bugholes or fabricators? It's because it didn't have enough demolition force. Demolition value is basically armor for building, and it's an all or nothing. Basically if the attack's demolition force is below the buildings destruction value, the attack does nothing. If an attack's demolition force is above the destruction value, the building instantly dies.
    This is why turrets were getting instantly slapped by rockets, and no amount of health buffing was going to fix it. Because enemy rockets had more demolition force than the turrets had destruction value.

      They were thinking about creating more battle passes (warbonds) so the grind keeps increasing in their little live service business model and players spend money out of frustration.

      It gives them a TON more options in terms of enemy and weapon variety, and creates a meaningful bank of knowledge that people can learn by doing research. Its honestly amazing, and the complexity is my personal favourite part ​of the game @aidena2749

      I’ve taken down a strider before without touching the turret on top, and had it track me even in death. Maybe the sentry was locked onto something like that?

    I did a helldive bot eradicate mission and brought it to test. It took out most of the dropships coming in all by itself , and by the time it was out of ammo, I only had 30 seconds on cooldown. It’s taken down factory striders and whole hordes of devastators ( rocket devs still kinda hurt it though in my experience) it got the love it needed

    Awesome video. I hope arrowhead takes another look at the arc tower. Either adding heavy stagger, increasing its range or reducing the cool-down (ideally I'd love to have 2 uses before it goes on cool-down) but no green stratagems have this precedent.

      Because of how unique the tesla tower is, I really want it to be able to work well. Sucks it wasn't mentioned in the update. I'm hoping they're cooking something up nice for it.

      And maybe add a specialization that makes ALL teammates take 95% less damage from lighting attacks, so you could run a full Raiden kit without accidentally one-shotting teammates anytime they're within range of a random diagonal chain.
      I'd LOVE to play more with the Arc Thrower and Arc Tower, but I'm always stressed about how easy it is to team kill with them, so I usually stay away.

      @@Wallbouncing I think if they reworked it to instead of a single arc "shot" it could be a continous arcing lightning to anything in the area. reduced damage but they take more damage overall and get slowed. This also means that if you get caught in one, you dont instantly die allowing you to dive to safety.

    Hey! Thanks for the comment feature! Yeah, I’m super happy with the update to rocket sentries, it’s actually incredible how well it performs with the new changes- especially when a lot of the best suggestions were concurred by the balance devs and implemented. It’s a great feeling.

    After these last few patches I can finally put my autocanon down and autocanon sentry and enjoy new things. I use the HMG and the decently buffed Eruptor. Which are useful with the new Rocket sentry and stun grenades. I keep it alive it keeps me alive and we work in tandem.
    I can now bring mutliple turrets again as well and just watch them mow down mobs of enemies and since i'm using the HGM it just allows me to clear hordes of enemies without bringing specific horde clearing strategems.

    The rocket sentry is great now, deffo better on bots but still really good against bugs too. On the last defend mission i took it to it got a 60 kill streak on its own, against bots it usually runs out of ammo about 15 seconds before a new one is ready

    I sorta feel like you brushed over the ammo economy of the turret being significantly better now, it no question is now the turret that fires for the longest amount of time behind the mortars and the tesla tower which obviously doesn’t use ammo. The longevity makes it immensely useful for holding an area, primarily in the tower defense mission but occasionally in 40 min missions as well.

      Yeah the sustainability of this thing is insane.
      AC Sentry might be a bit stronger, but wastes ammo like nothing, and runs out of it super quickly.

      The ammo economy is definitely better now since it no longer needs to always commit 2 rockets to a single target. Going more into detail about it, a huge issue sentries in general were suffering from was low uptime. A majority of that issue was solved with increasing its survivability. Now that they can take hits, they now only go down when they've been up for their entire deployment time or when they run out of ammo. The AC sentry will go down fast because of how quickly it burns ammo, and the rocket sentry is able to stay out for quite a long time now since it uses its ammo a lot more efficiently and it doesn't die so fast.       I'd still prefer the autocannon sentry because it'll actually kill everything with its ammo and there's no ammo wasted. Needs much less babying too.

    I love the rocket sentry against bots man, just consistent fire rate on anything until its dead, decent AoE and the huge range makes it honestly the sentry I get the most consistent value out of. You can chuck it away, even with servo, and it'll still be in a relevant range as long as it's not behind a rock or anything.
    Super fun with backpack support weapons

    Thanks for making an update to your sentry video, commendable.
    I was also disappointed in the lack of details they've given us in the blogpost. I think it's gotten to the point where the community doesn't trust the devs and will forever have to test the changes. Especially with "shadow" nerfs/buffs being a thing.

      I am 100% behind the changes, but yeah I do wish they gave us more information about the changes done to the rocket sentry's updated targeting. Aside from the rocket sentry, the Spear should've had some breakdown about the fixes. It was pretty much finicky since the start and a lot of people have been asking for a fix. I know a lot of people are beyond happy about the fix, which they should be since it works great now, but I know there's a lot of curious people that just want to know what made it worked that way to begin with. Appreciate you checking out the video!

    I never thought Id be taking it over the Autocannon sentry, but now I am, really great for dealing with the air patrols which are a pain the butt otherwise.

    I’ve been running a sentry& spear loadout. Autocannon, rocket, and mini gun. I throw them to one side or the other and use them like a flank to my attack. It has been amazing for both automaton and bugs

    I’ve been running the same build for both Bots & Nids. The Rocket-Maxxing Build; that takes Rocket Sentry, Rocket Pods, EATS & Spear. Sounds stupid but it makes those situations when the game spawns a bunch of Armor just evaporate.

    I havent personnally tried it but I've seen it perform on field and honestly it was fine. I wasnt expecting much but it did what I wanted the turret to do which is prioritise heavies and kill them.

    love that thing to bits, for some reason it just doesn't die and oftentimes it stays around long enough to help fight upwards of 5 bot patrols

      It’s mainly because the Turret staggers enemies due to the explosion and also the fact it can be placed 100m away and still fire. It is a very sustainable sentry and better at CC than even the Gatling. It also does less friendly fire damage as the explosion damage is reduced but the direct impact damage will never ever direct hit a Helldiver unless they are stupid.

    ive watched the current rocket sentry hit like 3 pouncers out of the air in a row. it DOES NOT MISS what its aiming at.
    ive also found most automatons dont have perfect accuracy, so it being further away from enemies make it take less hits.

    Without the 50% explosive resistance, the sentries can take 2 automaton rockets without blowing up, while with it, it now takes 3 to destroy. Thats 3 times the survivability of the previous sentries! Even with this change, i dont really use the rocket sentry. I do however always take the machine gun one bec low cooldown plus the destruction value + all the buffs. it shreds devastators and those chainsaws, so nice, especially when their crowding you!

    New build idea: rocket sentry, gatling sentry, ems mortar sentry. Plus like some support weapon idk. Gatling for hordes, rocket for big guys, ems to keep enemies from getting to close, espicially chargers and stuff. Might be effective against bots idk.

    Auto cannon sentry+ rocket launcher sentry I call it the wombo combo. Great for throwing down for running away from bugs and bots. Factory striders and Bile Titans CANNOT withstand that heat. It's great

      Also, some ideas I had for the sentry were that if you tag something it'll prioritize it over everything until target decimation. Ik it's a pipe dream but I think that would be so cool. Talk about a power trip. Also an arc thrower sentry would be dope. I know the arc tower is a thing but if it was a sentry it might not be unusable in almost every situation. Give it more range than the arc thrower, less damage, and more stagger.

    Honestly after playing around with it now, it makes me feel like the autocannon turret needs some tlc. Especially after the mortar buff in the ship upgrades.

    Tesla tower for rocket defense. Tesla won't damage and destroy sentries and will actually increase the chain range.

    im thinking about autocannon or autocannon turret+ rocket turret and HOW fast can both of them shooting at the same drop ship take it down
    or combining it with autocannon cuz ofc on defense missions there is probably few dropships at the same time and i would like to test if its faster then using rockets

    it either needs more damage or stagger.
    If a charger is running towards the sentry, there's a good chance the charger will win, whereas the autocannon sentry will stagger it

      different tools for different jobs - autocannon may be better vs. chargers but rocket sentry may be better vs. gunships.

      as much as id like to have it buffed, i think it sets as something to differentiate it to the autocannon. Its kind of like a sniper vs a CQB

      Put Rocket Sentry on a Rock and far (+90m) and if you are close, use a Stun Grenade to give seconds to kill the Charger

      I used to think the same thing, but I felt that the increase of range and variety of targeting made the rocket sentry fall into this "support" sentry identity while the auto cannon sentry is more geared towards front lining with heavy DPS. I know arrowhead wanted to be able to separate the two sentries, and I feel like these changes did a great job at doing that. Thanks for checking out the video!

      Rocket sentry should be the best against heavy armor, autocannon is the jack of all trades, while gatling is trash clearer.

    As a squad we run 1 rocket 2 AC and 1 EMP mortar, when we slap these down we just sit there and lol while everything dies

    The rockets are how a turret should be in this game. Especially a game that has so much mobility in its combat. This turret is powerful because it has actual range and ammo.
    The range being most important. If a regular machine gun turret could last this long with this range it would be just as amazing.
    I always thought the ship upgrades for turrets should have focused on increasing range and ammo, not explosion resistance and hp.

    from what i've gathered, when they say they increased the sentries destruction value, i believe they're referencing a "destructibility" stat which is used for fences, buildings and bug holes. when they buffed the explosive crossbow so that it could destroy fences, fabricators and holes, they wrote that they increased the "destructibility" value of it. prior to the patch, a bolt could not remove props or obstacles no matter what. my guess is that sentries previously had a similar destructibility requirement as a fence, if a rocket devastator could one shot a fence it could one shot a turret.
    it's unclear how the destructibility thing works exactly, there must be some variability to it. i'm speculating tho.

      That's an interesting thought. Thinking more about it with your point about fences, buildings and bug holes; I know that the ballistic shield can be destroyed, but I wasn't sure if it had a set amount of health that when dropped to 0 it would be destroyed, or it can tank everything but if it was to take a heavy shot that goes over that threshold for destructibility then it breaks. I think you're right and the sentries were adjusted in that same way. Appreciate your comment and thanks for checking out the video!

    def more of a bot than bug sentry since chargers aren't a big deal with stuff like eats/recoilless, flamethrower and even the spear (though only from medium range lol) and the chargers can very easily destroy it unless it's quite far out and the charger gets targeted really fast or you stun it before it can get too close, bile titans are just a pain in the ass due to their (lack of) design but bring it against the bots with something like a shield gen and it can do alot, the shield will help keep it (and you) alive longer to kill more things and get more shots off on things that can easily destroy it like tanks and striders
    went from pretty shit to actually really good now, we need more changes like this arrowhead!

    I just don’t see why I’d ever use it over the ac sentry. And believe me I’ve TRIED to make it work because I love sentries but every time I set it down 50m away from a charger and watch how it gets effortlessly destroyed I can’t help but reminisce on how the ac sentry would have stun locked it and killed it with 20m to spare. Whenever I place it down 100m from a bile titan and watch as the titan somehow gets to it and kills it anyway I can’t help but remember the multiple times I’ve watched a single ac sentry kill two bile titans. When it comes to eradicate missions sometimes I’ll bring the rocket AND the ac sentry but when I’m choosing between the two I genuinely cannot see what the rocket sentry has going for it. Imo it should fill a similar role to the machine gun sentry and get that decreased cooldown because then I would absolutely run it all the time.

      The bile titan is the only unit the rocket sentry cannot take on by itself. Even if it was to lock onto one at max range, like you mentioned, the constant shooting won't be able to bring it down by the time it gets to the rocket sentry. The rocket sentry is able to hold its own against pretty much every automaton units, but yeah against the terminids it doesn't do so well and the auto cannon would,more often than not, perform better against that enemy type.

      Mortars (EMP and regular), they work best in pairs, and then you can choose what you want. The autocannon is probably the best; it works great with any combination. The gatling gun is good for small and medium-sized bugs or automatons, and the rocket is fun too. I’ve seen a few people use the Tesla turret as an access denial weapon, but most people don’t use mines and don’t like them.

      I use autocannon, rocket and The machine gun sentry(not gaitling) and whatever you want. I use the precision for the 4th and a stun grenade for chargers to protect turrets.

    Chargers are the main aids for sentries on bug side, making them borderline useless.

    the odd thing is that scout striders are technically heavies. you can tell cause the spear locks onto only heavies and buildings.
    they also take up more slots in a bot drop than devastators.
    now, me personally, i’d rather have the rocket sentry shoot heavy devastators then scouts. or anything.
    it’s always possible that a scout strider is of, potentially, equal size, in code, to factories and tanks.
    another odd thing it can do is shoot down bot drops which can be useful but more often than not leaves the stragglers in an impenetrable shield for a minute.
    overall the damage and uptime is fantastic, the main flaws have to really do with the general game design flaws lol.
    i’ll probably still use the autocannon though, i don’t play at a level where i can see more than 3 factories and the main issue are really heavy devastators, especially with the new spawn rates.
    2 or so factories can be taken down pretty easily if i pay attention.
    tl;dr, rocket sentry is A++

      i don’t have really anything to say on the bug front. i mostly use gatling sentry or mortar. i use it to clear chaff so i can focus on chargers and titans.
      chargers, being really common now, and the rare titans being the ideal rocket target, i usually take flamethrower cause burnt leg, lmao. the rare titan i kill with ops.
      i do take it for defense missions but besides that i think other sentries can perform better since bugs have a smaller heavy enemy variety than bots.
      unless they add the hive lord or behemoth titans

    I was quite excited to use it after the patch but when I looked closely there was much to be desired when it comes to target aquisition and it still felt lackluster. Autocanon still outperforms it for me

      AC runs out of ammo way too quickly. And wastes it a lot.
      It sees a scavenger: BANG BANG BANG, 1 kill and 2 shots wasted.
      Rocket Sentry will give much better results on missions where you need to stay in one place for longer, aka High Value Assets or Ore Vein ones.

      I do feel like target prioritization still needs some tweaks, but it's definitely a lot more improved than before. I feel it's more consistent and aligns with expectations against the automatons (outside of the fabricator) and has some issues with the terminids.

      Here's how I would break it down:
      Autocannon Sentry
      - Poor ammo economy (always fires in bursts of 3)
      - Slow turn rate
      - High DPS
      - Effective mob clearing/single target damage (esp chargers)
      Rocket Sentry
      - High Range and Aerial Coverage
      - Good Ammo Economy
      - Lesser DPS
      - Target Prioritization
      Even though the target prioritization still needs some work, I point it out because the rocket sentry focuses on high value targets like gunships and cannon turrets on factory striders, ideally. The autocannon has a very slow turn rate and runs a risk of being flanked. I think the autocannon is good for being some front-line DPS and the rocket sentry can be a supporting sentry to assist divers and other sentries.       This is from the previous big patch, I was just slow when it came to updating my guide on the rocket sentry with all the new changes. I do feel like people are now finding out, though. After the patch came out I was seeing a lot of strafing runs and orbital gatlings but now I'm starting to see a lot of sentries being used.

    I noticed that the Rocket Sentry also targets and can damage command bunkers as well. Can you confirm this?

      I can confirm that it locks onto the command bunkers but I don't believe it destroys it. Same issue with the bot fabricator.

    It looked like in the clip that it took out the drop ship after the ship dropped everything. Is there any value to that?

      I'll be honest, most of the time it won't provide much value, since bots could still survive the explosion of the dropship and even use the debris as cover. However, the dropship debris can also be used by you and your team as cover as well, preventing even rocket devastators from hitting you, so it's like a double-edged sword. In the end though, I like to do it just because I like seeing the explosion, haha.

    how does this compare to the AC turret for automatons?

      In my opinion, the AC turret is great for the medium armored units like devastators and hulks. Since the rocket sentry still needs direct hits to perform well, the heavy devastators shield actually is able to tank a lot of the rockets it fires. The autocannon does have a wider explosive radius and greater explosive damage, which makes them better against those units and grouped up infantry in general. The rocket sentry, with its now 100m range and aerial coverage, can be seen more as a supporting sentry while the autocannon with its high DPS and slow turn speed, should be used for concentrated fire on a single point.       Personally, I would say yes. I believe the rocket sentry, with the better ammo economy, accuracy, and adjustments to damage makes it not only useful but great to bring in. I also believe that the AC and Rocket sentry serve different purposes, with the AC being more of a front line and high DPS turret while the rocket sentry could be a more supporting sentry with wider and aerial coverage.       Rockets are very good at the gunships. With the decreased spread, and better impact damage, they can take them out pretty consistently. If you want an anti-air option but don't want to bring a weapon such as an autocannon or quasar cannon, it's now possible to consider even the rocket sentry.     my rocket turret thinks a small bug is a larger target then the bile titan walking towards it.

      Yeah the bile titan targeting seems to be the most finicky. Generally the targeting seems more consistent across the board but it just trips on itself when it sees a giant bug on stilts. Thanks for checking out the video!

      AC Sentry has better DPS against most targets and can wipe patrols and heavies in seconds. However, it's ammo economy is dogwater, it wastes ammo a lot and runs out very quickly.
      Rocket Sentry has less DPS, but better AoE and an insanely good ammo economy and sustain. This thing can fire for days it feels like.
      In other words, both are great, and it depends on what your goals are: to keep moving and deal bursts of damage, or to stay and defend 1 area for a longer time.
      I'd just become an engineer and bring both :)

      I agree with squeezy. AC has higher DPS, but slower turn speed and poor ammo economy. Rocket sentry has been feeling more like a support sentry with its longer range and aerial coverage, and the AC sentry is still incredibly strong and effective if you need to clear enemies fast. Don't believe one is necessarily better than the other since they both serve different purposes, but they are individually great at what they do!

    Fires forever and suppresses the enemy more efficiently than the AC turret. Too accurate though, can waste endless shots on a target it can't quite hit. Keep away from complex territory and bot fabs.
