      Both pilots were captains. It is not uncommon on Aer Lingus who have many long serving staff who they look after and retain. They also have the highest percentage of female flight crew of all major airlines. This flight was just like any other, with consistent high standards and a relaxed efficient flight deck
      Few people realise that Aer Lingus have not had a crash or person injured during flight in more than 50 years. As you can imagine, they are welcomed by ATC all over the world. Their safety record is even more surprising, due to the constant bad weather blowing across Ireland from the Atlantic. Their have been a few occasions where transatlantic flights have had to touchdown and hold in London while the weather clears, but since the changeover to airbus they are almost a thing of he past.
      Shannon is quite well protected from severe cross winds, so flights are frequently diverted from Dublin and particularly Cork, both of which are near the coast. Needless to say, passengers do not appreciate the 3 hour coach ride after a long flight.

    I have noticed that here and in other videos that on landing, both pilots have hands on controls, regardless of who the pilot flying is. If the pilot flying gets in trouble, the other pilot can immediately assume control. Fiona made an excellent maximum crosswind landing. I noticed that immediately on touchdown, the crosswind tried to push the nose of the plane to the left, but Fion corrected with right rudder. She's going to make a great captain. I would like to see more young women get into commercial aviation. The crew was extremely professional and worked well together. Their cockpit discipline once they began their approach was spot on and they maintained that discipline until they got to the gate. No nonsense or unnecessary chatter. You can still get in trouble on the ground! The landing is not completed until the parking brake is set at the gate.

    It looks like there is so much play in that stick, seems like she’s making huge inputs. She obviously knows what she’s doing clearly I’m just surprised at all that play. Good stuff, hats off to her.

      @@deanb4799 I’m sure it’s design3d that way on purpose. I feel like there’s some built in lag to keep them from making big changes on the control surfaces. I wouldn’t want to slam the rudder over on an aircraft that size. Would be interesting to climb in the simulator and feel it out a bit.

    • @ericgu9036
      @ericgu9036 Před 3 lety +1

      She’s making correcting inputs as there was lots of crosswind. The crew knew that there was wind, and risk of wind shear.

    • @Gilles45
      @Gilles45 Před 2 lety

      The side stick is not directly linked to the control surfaces. The inputs of the stick are fed to the plane's computers which in turn activate the ailerons and the elevator.

    I think Fiona was the pilot on my recent flight from Shannon to JFK. (She sure looks like the pilot who deplaned with us.) She took 90 mins off our scheduled time by riding a tailwind WESTBOUND across the Atlantic. How is that even possible? A great flight!

    As someone who doesn't like to fly, when I watch this crew, I feel like, maybe it's fine. They are so reassuring and professional. And Fiona is so calm, when they were taking off from San Francisco to Ireland, during their climb, she looks out the window and comments on how pretty the city is. Sort of like Joe Montana during a drive in the SuperBowl back in the 80s saying in the huddle, "Isn't that John Candy sitting over there?" LOL Like, she's so cool, nothing rattles her. I just love that!
