  • After a decade wait, Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 finally released to fans in 2018. However, not all was as expected. Now a Nintendo Switch Exclusive and in the hands of developer Team Ninja, the experience is quite a bit different from the prior 2 games. In this video, we'll go back and look at every aspect of Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3. For example, we'll discuss initial fan reactions to the announcement trailer and how the game was received after release. We'll also take a very in-depth walk through the storyline of MUA3, the dlc, all the additional content, and how the game compares to the prior ones. Basically, we're talking about everything! Btw, this is a SPOILER FILLED retrospective review of the game, so make sure you've beaten the story before watching. We have a ton to discuss, so I hope you'll join me in revisiting Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 :)

This version of Spider-Man and Venom is interesting, as Spidey here is far more willing to team up with Venom and the Green Goblin unlike his grudge holding comicbook counterpart. (fun fact both Eddie and the symbiote forgave Peter and stopped wanting to kill him long before Peter would forgive them) Eddie and the symbiote are also acknowledged as the anti-heroes they are in the comics to the point of notably not wanting to fight the heroes in the boss fight but doing so anyway for their freedom and not eating Electro. This is extremely notable as Eddie does not actually eat people in the comics, he just uses the threat of doing so as a scare tactic, with the Scorpion being the first person to actually do so. With the exceptions of Venom threatening Spidey before teaming up without being provoked first and having animosity towards all spider themed heroes, (which is extremely off and weird especially for Miles) this is actually one of the most faithful renditions of the character, albeit their 90s characterization. All of these characters was at one point on one point or another on the Sinister Six, complete with Venom turning on the team the first chance they get, though never this specific list. (Venom's version did have Sandman, Mysterio and Electro though)
The Infinity Sentinel is indeed a game exclusive. I however don't think it is a soft reboot or a continuation but instead a hard reboot. As nothing here really lines up with the world shown in MUA 1 and 2 and some aspects like Nick outright contradict it. I'm also not a fan of any the additional modes MUA3 has to offer (besides the story expansion) or a potential horde mode and much rather see a return of comic missions and hub worlds with unique character based dialogue. To be honest gameplay modes just for gameplay's sake without any story or character relevance don't appeal to me in the slightest. While it isn't a deal breaker and I do find MUA3 to be funner to play than MUA2, I don't like how synergy dependent the game is and I also miss the ability to go it alone like in MUA1. Venom also gameplay wise isn't really faithful to the comic version, nor does he have the healing factor trait for some reason but I can't really fault them too much for it as Venom would become a bruiser clone of Spidey in game that already has two similar spider people and unfaithful as it may be I still love the MvC moves. Despite my complaints I do agree this game doesn't get the praise it deserves and I actually think this game has the best art style out of the 3. I also agree this game's story did a good job.
    My rankings are,
    1. MUA1
    2. MUA3
    3. MUA2

Sorry for the late reply and you're welcome! If you ever get the time and money and want to get into Venom, I can recommend you a few TPBs and runs.
For Eddie there is no better place to start than the Venom Lethal Protector TPB which has his first adventure as the title character and his canon backstory for Eddie. (the TPB Dark Origin is non canon and was made to tie into the horrible Spider-Man 3 version)
If you instead want to hit the ground running Mike Costa's run (starting from #150 or the TPB Venom Vol. 2: The Land Before Crime is another good start as it captures the feel of Eddie's original run of miniseries after miniseries but with better, more consistent writing and more character development.
The recent and soon to be ending run by Donny Cates is also mostly good, though he goes for a darker tone that is not usually typical for the character. This starts with the TPB Venom by Donny Cates Vol 1 Rex. A quick warning if you choose this route Marvel as far as I know does not have a easy to buy good collection for the Absolute Carnage event and some of the tie ins don't matter and are outright contradicted in the main event and Venom books. From what I remember the only tie ins that actually mattered was the Venom tie ins, the Scream one, (though more because that spins off to its own series) the Separation Anxiety one and the Lethal Protectors one.
Some transnational TPBs for Eddie are Spider-Man New Ways to Die, which sees him return as Anti-Venom after getting rid of the Venom symbiote before Civil War (symbiote became evil after absorbing a evil clone) and marks the start of the direction he is in now for Modern Marvel. While Go Down Swinging has Peter FINALLY forgiving Eddie and the Venom symbiote and marks their transition to friends as seen in Absolute Carnage. Both were done by Dan Slott.
Other Venom runs I recommend to get you started are where Flash was the host by Rick Remender and Cullen Bunn, both have really good collections if pricey. (Its Venom than insert the writer's name than collection)

Considering the game was "localised" twice, due to the Marvel team not speaking japanese and the japanese studio of Team Ninja needing to translate it as a story, make it into a game and then translate that script again to include this classic japanese cheesyness, this ends up closer to the various cartoons more than the movies and comics. Especially considering what the team chose, mostly by getting as many things visually and acoustically close to the 90s Marvelverse, evident mostly by the X-Men with Magneto being one line away from "X-MEN! WELCOME TO DIE", the voice cast from Wolverine and the X-Men along with Averngers EMH and other shuffles of voice cast from previous Marvel games that also reached foreign shores. Then you have the sneaky things Team Ninja put in the game, like some parts of the Ant-Man and Ultimo fight actually reference things like Ultraman Zero in its choreography.
To put it simply, it's as if the american writters just gave a script and outline to japanese studio and the people who grew up with whatever Marvel thing they had in their youth, shoved it in, with a healthy dose of Japan in it.

It is so easy to just get in a groove and play for hours. So many characters that feel incredibly fun to play. Also my 6 year old son finds this game to be amazing! He has such a ball just jamming through levels and playing all his favorite heroes. Really hope they make a 4th as I'll be right there on release day.

I REALLY love this game! Honestly I was hyped at that reveal trailer cause seeing Ultimo, Green Goblin, the X-men and Sentinels made me think it was leaning much more towards the comics. And the new art style looked like it let them do really smooth and expressive animations that would've been much harder with a more realistic art style. And I think they absolutely NAILED the story! Seeing all the locations and characters was just awesome. And the dialogue is the kind of cheesy comic stuff that I absolutely live for! I just think the combat can get really overwhelming sometimes and some of the levels feel like they could've been designed better to be less frustrating (Hel in particular), but that could just be me.

I think my biggest complaint about UA3 is the lack of detail density compared to the first. Exploring home bases was so fun in UA 1. You had the quiz mini games, conversations with minor supporting characters, and all sorts of Easter eggs. And the ISO-8 system, while mostly troubled with tedium, also has the issue of being bland compared to the collectible equip items you'd get in the old games. Aside from being more user friendly to sort through, the collectible items were fun to find. You'd get a bionic arm from beating the Winter Soldier, go to Asgard to forge Asgard armor, beat Loki and get trolled with "Loki's Gift". ISO-8 is so uninteresting, aesthetically.

I understand that synergies were probably a big reason behind why each character was limited to four skills, but I miss the freedom you were given as a player to experiment with different skills and builds in the older games.
I just wish they had more RPG elements like MUA and the XML games with the stats and gear system, too.
Maybe the could have "loadouts" that affect gameplay like how MUA1's costumes did, but letting you choose the stats separately from the visuals (I hated having good stats on a costume I didn't really like)
Heck, they could re-work the ISO-8s to do those things in a bigger way and not just in a single-digit stat boost. Maybe have character-specific ISO-8s that give added effects to certain skills, like how ISO-8s worked in Avengers Alliance, the old facebook RPG.
I enjoyed playing MUA3, too, but I guess I just really want MUA1 gameplay with MUA3 visuals

Yay, was really excited to see you do this! I just revisited MUA3 myself recently and my thoughts really changed on it. At first I was sort of mixed on it but on revisiting it, there’s a lot to like, though I still have some issues. I love the artstyle; it fits the marvel universe perfectly and makes the characters look more like themselves than the more gritty artstyle of the first 2 games. The combat is also more tactical than I originally gave it credit for and characters feel quite unique even though a lot of them have some similar skills; I liked that some had more aerial focus while others had more stagger focus. I also think it has the best roster and everyone looks phenomenal. My major issue is how grindy it is....I don’t play MUA for the side modes, I play it for the story and being able to switch between characters whenever I got to SHIELD point was so fun and allowed for more exploration. I can’t do that unless I exhaustively grind through the repetitive modes and that’s just not very fun. I also think the story was quite weak; I would prefer a longer story and I REALLY miss the hub worlds, those need to come back, especially with the unique character interactions. If those things were addressed in a fourth instalment and this roster returned, I would be a happy camper. It’s an enjoyable game overall and I think it’s even better upon revisiting it.

If you’re only there for the story, then I totally see your problem, since leveling is extremely slow if you’re not doing rifts/other modes.

Man, this video was such a cool experience. I had no clue Team Ninja had done a Marvel: Ultimate Alliance game, and as a huge fan of Ninja Gaiden and Nioh, it does not surprise me in the slightest that the gameplay in this one is very flashy and super fun.
Team Ninja did stumble a bit after Tomonobu Itagaki left the company after Ninja Gaiden 2, without him Ninja Gaiden 3 turned out awful, but after listwning to the fans' complaints they came out with Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor's Edge in 8 months time (which is incredible by the way), which addressed tons of mistakes in the game and it's now almost as good as the rest of the Ninja Gaiden games. They do seem to have found their footing recently with the Nioh franchise, and as someone who has also poured 400+ hours in the first Nioh, It's kinda normal to hear that you've also poured as much time in M:UA3, Team Ninja does have a way of making insanely replayable games and they seem to be on fire with one banger after another lately. I'm sure another M:UA is in development, their team is a workhorse in terms of output, they put out one quality game after another, it's insane really.

Nothing against the story writers, I know why they chose the infinity stone, I just think they are a lazy plot. It’s easy to just place them wherever you need want to go to make the background there. Every level felt inconsequential to the whole plot besides the first and last one, like they all could take place anywhere. I also feel like they could have done a little more to make the worlds and characters feel less hollow, like for instance having special quotes for synergies. My main team had both gwen and miles and it always felt weird that they were introduced together but never acknowledged each other. I think specific characters should get special dialogues and then maybe just dialogues they have based on what teams the other characters are from so it’s easier to program, like giving a generic phrase every time someone synergies with an x men or an avenger

The realistic look in MUA 1 was 1000x better than this game, and probably 50x better than MUA 2. They need to make a game based completely on the comics, not the MCU, not an animated cartoon, not the new comic books, not any spin offs. Should be based on the comics and the storylines that the amazing stan lee thought up and created with the help of others in the 60’s-80’s. Even the mcu has messed up plenty

My favorite aspect of this game that vastly puts it above 1 and 2 is how unique each character feels. There’s some overlap in abilities, but every character has unique attack animations. In UA 1 and 2 everyone had the same basic combos and it was always annoying, like Hawkeye doing punches just doesn’t make sense
The biggest thing I missed though it’s the little down time we got at home bases, that was always one of my favorite aspects of the old games even back to x men legends where you could just kinda vibe at the mansion.
My biggest criticism of UA3 though is the artificial grind. Every DLC update the raised the level cap, and the inherit grindy nature of the ISO system just drains me out. It takes forever to max out characters levels and skills and even longer to get decent gear for them, and it often doesn’t feel very rewarding after getting what you want anyway

Excellent retrospective with a lot of good insight and commentary. I initially bounced off of MUA3 not too long after going through the story a couple times and being unimpressed with the first DLC, but I've returned to it recently with the full release of the expansion pass, costumes, ongoing events, and rewards. It feels like a much more refined experience than playing this game on release. Xlegends and MUA1-2 are some of my all-time favorite games and it's nice to finally feel the same passion about the newest installment. This retrospective really inspired me to go back and give it more of a chance, thanks for your hard work and passion! Here's hoping we get Xmen legends 3 or ultimate alliance 4 at e3 2021

I really enjoyed this game for what it is, but if they ever make a sequel, I hope they tone down the MCU designs by a few notches. It's kind of jarring to see Cap, Winter Soldier, Ant-Man, Black Panther and others look so much like their MCU counterparts, but then characters such as Klaw, Scarlet Witch, Loki, Ultron, etc. look much more like their comic book designs. Same goes for the different levels. The X Mansion was so much more enjoyable compared to say Wakanda. It's all a weird mix mash, and as much as I like the MCU movies and recent shows, I would rather that aesthetic stay out of other Marvel media. So much MCU inspiration is half the reason why cartoons like Avengers: Assemble are so bland and unoriginal. I really don't want Ultimate Alliance to follow that same path in the future.

@@windedwriterfilms8321 Agreed. I loved how comic book based the first Ultimate Alliance was. Every time I get a new costume in Ultimate Alliance 3 I immediately use it if their original look was based on the MCU. Iron Man for example. I would much rather play as his extremis suit look.
I really hope Marvel get out of this "phase" someday and realizes that not everything has to be based on the MCU to make money. There's a reason fans prefer the older cartoons and games way back when. They were so much more original and actually made me want to check out the comics that inspired them, very much like you said.

    Great retrospective Nerdy!
I just became a big marvel fan when this game got announced, I had seen all the movies and even started collecting some comics and diving into marvel history, I also had a Switch and played it regularly. It always felt like this game was tailored just for me because I am a big Nintendo and Marvel fan and my favorite kind of games are those with warriors style gameplay like this one, you can see Team Ninja and Koei Tecmo's hand in MUA3. I love the game's story, voice acting, combat, reference to comics and music (PLEASE for the love of god SOMEBODY rip the music files for the DLC songs, I would love to hear them outside the game). Although I always feel like there's much room for improvement. The impossible task of completion and the grinding nature of this game make it sometimes very painful but I think there's enough content for it to always be enjoyable. The multiplayer is great if you have a brother or a friend that is willing to join you. I wish more people would still play online, but having someone on Discord to ask makes it much easier. In the end I love this game and I have poured hundreds of hours into it, I believe it's my second most played games after Smash Bros. Ultimate. If you are a fan of Marvel, or want to get more into it, DEFINITELY get this game and the DLC if you haven't (it's worth it)
As you can see at 1:08:37 I won't miss a chance if there's someone to play with and I would love for more and more people to fall in love with the game as much as I did.
Thank you so much for making this video and for all the points you made in it. And if you read through all of this, thank you for listening to my story, I would love to hear yours.
