THE BEST X-Men Game (So Far) - X-Men Legends 2 - Retrospective
Vložit
- čas přidán 27. 06. 2021
- X-Men Legends 2 was Raven Software's second Marvel game, coming out only 1 year after X-Men Legends 1. However, with big improvements to gameplay, cutscenes, and characters, XML2 stands on it's own as one of the best Marvel games of all time. In this retrospective, we'll dive deep into what makes X-Men Legends 2 so special, how it was made, and where the series went from here. I had a ton of fun revisiting this game, so I hope you'll join me revisiting X-Men Legends 2!

I so wished that we had gotten a 3rd X-Men Legends. Ultimate Alliance was tons of fun but the two Legends were by far my favorites in the whole series.
Exactly we need a third x men game
Third X-men legends and a real third ultimate alliance! the wii game wasn’t the same
@@keithdeibert2978 you mean the switch
Maybe when the MCU does the X-men then that will be a chance for a new X-men legends game.
I feel that, ultimate alliance 3 sucked so if we get our way we need to be extremely careful with development. Its art.
This game and the ultimate alliance games hold a special place in my heart. So much fun
ultimate alliance 1 is my #1 favorite game
Ultimate alliance 3 is pretty interesting. I had more fun with the older titles.

Real talk
@@FistOFrost UA3 was horrible
When I was a kid, my mom got this game for me as a Christmas present. I never heard of it, and I never asked for it. But when my mom was trying to find games for me, she asked a clerk that worked at the Wal-Mart electronic section for what games I would like as a kid, and sure enough, the clerk immediately said "X-men Legends 2 is a great game. He would LOVE it." And she got it.
After playing it, the clerk was right. Thank you, random Wal-Mart clerk. Without your input, I never would have played this amazing game. You are the real MVP.
That's how i got halo 1 and 2 what a Christmas morning that was
Both of yall comments are about to make me tear up lol
Awww that's an awesome story
Your mom is the real mvp
It was me. You're welcome.
What blew my mind was finding out the same voice actor who plays Apocalypse in this game is the same voice actor who plays Sully in the Uncharted games.
Oh really? I totally overlooked that actor. I would’ve never placed those two voices together as the same actor
@@alwaysnerdyretros Speaking of Uncharted, Quasimodo from Shrek Super Slam and Nathan Drake are both voiced by Nolan North.
@@darkscorpion-donzaloog He also voiced Cyclops, Colossus, Pyro, Berzerker, and Carl in Wolverine and The X-Men.
He was also Carmine Falcone in Telltale's Batman series. He probably isn't able to do his Apocalypse voice anymore as he is considerably older now.
@@darkscorpion-donzaloog Nolan North also voiced Sigmund in Ratchet and Clank: A Crack in Time.
It's really jarring to hear juggernaut with a southern accent. Though I love that they touch on one of the smallest details, the fact that he's Xavier's step brother.
The creators knew what they were doing!
I guess on a big dude even the smallest detail is as a truck
I am not from the U.S. so I do not know the accents that well. I always thought Juggernaut's accent was a New Jersey accent?
This game did a far more better job at portraying every Marvel Comic Mutant than any live-action X-MEN movie.
I really liked Magneto's and Xavier's relationship in this game. It definitely reminds me of their current alliance in the comics as co-leaders of Krakoa. Also it's pretty cool that they included Iron Man, implying that just like him, the other members of the Avengers were captured, leaving New York vulnerable
I feel like they probably had Xavier say “my home” in the destroyed X-Mansion because you could have possibly had a team of all Brotherhood members, and it’s certainly not THEIR home, lol.
Xavier was also born there and grew up there. It’s the rest of the X-Men’s home too, but he spent the most time there and it was his family’s estate.
I've missed you ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Agreed. It's "His Home" in that Xavier literally owns the place. He's not saying "Oh, I am the only one who lives here" he's saying "Welcome to this space that I literally own the deed to"
@@kharikhy-ree2242Oh I’m just seeing this now! I miss you too! I hope all is well! 😄
I just love the dark, serious, grounded vibe of this game, so nostalgic
THIS was my game. Apocalypse is my favorite X-Men villain and the roster was solid even if it was missing some favorites like Psylocke. It had some awesome boss fights and the expansion of the skill lists for the characters added a lot. I've lost track as to how many times I've played through this gem. The ending inspired me to do a write-up for what X-Men Legends 3 would have been about and what it would have featured.
Do you think it would’ve been based around mr. Sinister or something else?
@@alwaysnerdyretros If we're going by precedent, yes. What I believe/hoped would have happened was the introduction of the High Evolutionary as a secondary antagonist. They could've done a version of the storyline where Sinister essentially tries to reset Earth by de-evolving the population after hijacking the High Evolutionary's resources. I had also envisioned the Hellfire Club being an actual location where you could actually fight some of the members like Selene, Donald Pierce, Trevor Fitzroy, and Sebastian Shaw himself and the final location being Wundagore. The write-up I did was pretty general but was filled with stuff I thought would have been cool.
That was THE BEST marvel game of all times, feels like playing a comic, second place to marvel ultimate!
@@HisBubbliness Jo pomp I'm poo
@@alwaysnerdyretros I think the next big X villain should be someone superior than Apocalypse like Dark Phoenix, Onslaught, Stranger or Vulcan, since Apocalypse was superior to the previous villain Magneto. Heck just like Magneto joined the X-Men against Apocalypse, in the comics Uatu beseeched Apocalypse to help out against the threat of Onslaught.
What I love about Dee Bradley Baker being nightcrawler, is that he's also Klaus in American Dad. And since they are both German, he uses basically the same voice. When my ex and I first played MUA, she called it instantly.
"Is that fucking Klaus?"
oh my god
Top ten game all time for me id kill for a remaster or even just a basic port. Its not even available for me to buy on my ps vita. Love your retrospective series and id like to throw in a possible game for you to do if youd like, Xmen origins wolverine the game. Movie wasnt great as we all know but the game was pretty great. Not sure if it ages well but just thought id give you some possible ideas for future videos. Thanks for the great content as always!!
I definitely want to cover x-men origins the game! Especially since it was also made by Raven Software, it would be nice to round out the Raven Marvel games. Great suggestion and one id love to get to sooner rather than later.
@@alwaysnerdyretros awesome! I didnt know they also did that game as well thats cool.
@@kylemelendez358 yeah they’re 4-for-4 on awesome marvel games in my opinion
@@alwaysnerdyretros yea ive been hoping Activision freed Raven from doing just COD dlc for years cuz theyre really talented, but yes i agree 4for4 and most of them were before Marvel blew up cuz of the mcu so even more props to them.
@@kylemelendez358 100% agree! I’d love to see them return to another marvel game now. I’m sure they could produce something really cool again
X-Men Legends II remains one of my all-time favorite superhero video games! I wished we had an X-Men Legends 3.
X-men legends 2 is definitely one of the greatest marvel games of all time, the story is incredible, the gameplay is fun, the characters are amazing, and i just overall love this game. As both an x-men and marvel fan, this game put a smile on my face. The wait of definitely worth it for your marvel retrospectives always nerdy. Awesome video as always and i cannot wait for the marvel nemesis retrospective video
Thank you very much and I totally agree! Excellent game by Raven Software. They haven’t failed me on Marvel
@@alwaysnerdyretros I still find it a shame I can't play it on my PS5. The story was good! The new moves were everything and I really liked the cheats for danger room disc's and such, because I could start hard mode with a low lvl save and have good "starter" gear. Btw do you play diablo?
This is one of a few games that I still wish would be remastered. The way they incorporated Marvel and X-Men lore into the game was mindblowing to me as a child
This game hits me with nostalgia so hard, It's still enjoyable play it even 15 years later.
I was surprised at how well it holds up
I’ve just noticed that the prison guards in the opening cinematic look almost identical to the guards in the opening cinematic for the X-Men Origins: Wolverine game, also developed by Raven! Another great game!
I legit just finished my replay of this game, I’ve probably played this game every way it possibly can be played. I still can’t believe how much joy this game gives me and how much it actually means to my family life, the reason I got into comics, my love for Iceman, and my love for video games. Honestly I’d love to write a whole story here but I won’t, definitely went through a lot of nostalgia watching this video and I’m so glad this game has the love it deserves. X-men Legends III although I want soo bad with Ultimate Alliance 3 being out could never even come close too this game.
Fun fact: this game taught me how to read through the in game dialogue.
Hahah that’s so awesome to hear how this game was such a big part of your childhood. I can’t think of a more fun way to learn how to read!
I really hope it gets a new life as a remaster someday soon. It still holds up well and I think it would be a great experience for marvel fans who missed out on its initial release
@@alwaysnerdyretros 1&2 are in need, I feel like if they did a full remaster of ravensoft games, added console exclusive characters/DLC available to all consoles, gave a few of characters one extra costume and bundled it for a new console release they could have something profitable and perhaps easy? (Don’t know, not a game technician)
@@thwipkid I’m not sure how tough it would be either, but I’d definitely buy it! I don’t know if that Activision license would be an issue either?
@@thwipkid
One of my favorites , too.
The only character I haven't used as the main lead is Toad.
Just finished games using Iceman and Bishop meleeing through the whole game.
I'm still trying to acquire all 9 of the Unique pieces of equipment. I had 6 on a save file once , but made the mistake of erasing it.
One of the things I'd like to see them do if a remaster ever happens , is having the character specific equipment in the weapon cache be applied to the character who opened the cache and for be for one of their activated skills.
@@robertmurdock1848 one of my favourite ways to play is either changing up the team to fit the special character dialogues in the game for every mission, or play every mission as a different character (the ladder is hard to do unless you’re a bit higher of a level before playing but it’s kinda fun)
In terms of the equipment I’ve never actually checked what the rarest equipment is in the game but after having saved game files since 2007 I’d assume I likely have some. Definitely something I should look into now, a new reason to play the game muahahahahahahaha!!!!!
Maaaaaan I was so hurt when Beast wasn’t a playable character! He was my man in the last game! But I love this game a lot.. wish we had 2 more X-Men Legends games after this. I’ve always dreamt of the the third X-Men Legends was Days of Future Past based so there you could introduce new characters and explain what happened to the previous playable or why they’re NPC.
I love this game. I still play this game till this day.
Each act in this game is so detailed and pulls so much inspiration from classic comics. It feels like you're playing a comic book, especially with characters all having a black outline.
Such a great complex game, I wish it would get more love, it fckin deserves it. All of the heroes are so unique and have different play styles. I mained the scarlet witch with the box ability and combustion, turning goons into cash boxes and then burning them was ecstatic
You should do a retrospective for Ultimate Spider-Man, that game was amazing and I feel like it's extremely underrated.
You know, I never got to play it as a kid so I’d definitely love trying it out now! It’s definitely one I plan on getting to
@@alwaysnerdyretros its great, and its a part of the bigger marvel universe
It was such a good story they implemented it into the Ultimate comics of Spider-Man.
This game was my introduction to Deadpool.
Mine was Ultimate Alliance actually, these games were all great for getting a crash course in marvel/xmen lore
These cinematics really hold up. Apart from the haziness they’ve aged extremely well.
Emma Frost diamond form was so OP in the first one though lol, she was the perfect crowd control character
I agree. Her Psychic abilities felt like they actually did something. And her Diamond buff didn’t hurt either.
@@DeathtotheAshes exactly! I guess ppl think she sucked because technically her powers didn’t do any damage, but it for sure had debuffs on the enemy!
I only wish she actually transformed with her buff like Magma does but she was great either way
Unfortunately i never played this one for myself i only played the first xmen game i jus wish they could remaster these xmen games like they did with ultimate alliance 1 and 2
I totally agree. I ended up using an emulator on my laptop to play this one. It upscaled the graphics and allowed me to use a controller still, so it could be the next best thing if you’re anxious to play it
@@alwaysnerdyretros Good Afternoon "Always Nerdy" what website did you use to get the Emulator for this game? And do you think I would be able to download this onto my Alienware Area 51 Desktop computer?
I love how magnetos cape makes it look like mystique has long red hair in the opening for a second.
I’m disappointed the silly in-battle dialogue that were obvious hints didn’t get a mention! I still can hear Apocalypse saying, “You should not USE the machine!” ROFL
I play this game almost every night on game cube, hands-down my favorite marvel game
This is my all time favorite game. I have played this game every way possible, with every character. The music is great, the story is good, and the character roster is great for it's time. I wish we could get a 3rd one but I doubt itll happen. My go to team is always Wolverine, Bishop, Magneto, and Juggernaut.
Man this was one of the greatest gifts to the life of an X-men fan dude
A video about X-Men Legends 2 in 2021. Definitely didn't have that on my bingo card, but I love it, one of my 3 favorite games ever
Can we talk about how shredded Professor Xavier was lmao
Sinister betrayed Apocalypse in AoA, as well. I don't particularly remember why; most likely because Apocalypse stood in the way of Sinister's own ambitions.
I wish Archangel/Angel was playable in any of these games. He's the only original member of the X-Men not to be playable in a raven marvel game.
This is both my favorite superhero game and one of my favorite games ever. Man I love everything about this game
X-Men origins: Wolverine and the X2 tie in game would both be good ones to do as well. I think the X2 game gets overlooked too often. Was actually fun with Mark Hamill voicing Logan.
Definitely on my list! I recently found both of them at a used game store and snagged them for future retrospectives. I remember enjoying both and curious to see if they still hold up today
Nightcrawler was OP. The Master of Chaos & teleport frenzy moves were 🔥🔥🔥
I've played this game more times then I can count. It never gets old!
I was so obsessed with this game as a child… I remember being so heartbroken Emma Frost was only playable towards the end of the first game, and she appeared in the second but wasn’t playable.
I hope for a HQ version of this game at some point.. so much potential and so much love from the fans
When Mystique searches for Destiny, she has a special dialogue with Rogue.
*S/N Jean has special dialogue with Grizzly as well
There are more special dialogues in the game: Toad/Blink, Iceman/Grizzly, Magneto/Zealot, Nightcrawler/Mr. Sinister, Wolverine/Lady Deathstrike, Gambit/Sebastian Shaw, Colossus/Kitty Pryde, and Jean Grey/Archangel (?). I believe that there's more, but I can't remember.
@@darkscorpion-donzaloog you're making me want to get this game again.
@@darkscorpion-donzaloogwould've been dope to have seen Scarlet Witch and Iron Man interact.
Year 2023 and this game is still so fun and better than most modern games.
Personally, If x-men legends ever got a third game I think, instead of mr sinister (who I love as villain but I don't see him working as big boss for a game), the main villain was Phoenix, with the game taking place in space, showing the adventurer side of x-men, with the heroes having adventures in other planets and meeting characters like Lilandra, the Shiar empiral guard, the Brood, Mojo and others
A cameo from Corsair would have been pretty sweet as well too. Character specific dialogue between him and Scott would have been amazing!!
Really happy to see another video from you. although I never had the chance to play xmen legends 1 or 2 in my childhood I live hearing about these games from you it's amazing getting this info about games like these
Thank you for the feedback! I’ve always wondered if these videos were interesting at all for someone who hasn’t played the game, so I’m glad to hear it is 😃 Thanks for checking it out and I hope you enjoy this one as well
cyclops, nightcrawler, rouge and scarlet witch was the team i used the most, loved this game
Yall I just got X-men Legends 2 at a used game store and I'm so happy I can experience this
I had the GameCube version of this game; it was a fast load, in between levels.
My main squad was Storm, Iceman, Deadpool, and Nightcrawler.
One thing I remember from this game is being scared shitless by the loading screens for the bosses, which often came out of nowhere and were really creepy looking.
That's funny he mentioned the Mikhail boss fight. When I was 12 my parents and sister played this game and we tried 10 times and couldn't pass it. I hopped on solo and got passed it by myself. He's not kidding, it was really hard
Wake up honey! Always Nerdy has another marvel retrospective out!
Hahaha let your partner sleep! 😂
Cinemactics in this game are just amazing.
I love this game and still pop it in my gamecube every now and then
most of these games are funner than the newer Avengers game I have on PS4
Emma Frost was the 3rd hint in the madri temple lol. She’s wealthy too. Plus she was part of the four that he needed! Great video
This game was fkn great, me and my best friend used to play the sh!t out of this game. And the fact that you can unlock Iron Man and Prof X after you beat the game is just something else. Makes you wanna go for another one, I had both X-Men: Legends games. He always used Wolverine and my main was Magneto. Good fkn times man, I am almost crying. Games used to be so much fun back then.
Wolverine was my main too, the rest was pretty much minions to navegate the cenario and puzzes
In the Deadpool game Mr Sinister is the main villain so it counts👍🏻
Would love to see a retrospective on the X-men Destiny game, so many people have forgotten about that game
I like the idea of having Iron Man in the game as a precursor to MUA
This game introduced me to Deadpool. I always got a kick out of knowing about him before most of my friends. I only played him so much because he had the night crawler teleport too
I played this game with my mom who also enjoyed it.
She found Deadpool to have a nice body (suit-only), but her problem with him: He never shuts up and found his behavior rather questionable.
Apocalpyse randomly showing up in dark corners in the cinematics is fucking terrifying.
Wow! Great video and also! Grizzly’s voice actor is amazing so I had to look him up, and it’s actually Kieth Ferguson, the voice of Bloo from Foster’s 😂
Wolverine , nightcrawler, rogue & iceman was my go to
I loved playing the different hidden groups such as classic X-men and heavy metal
My brother and I replayed this series constantly. So much fun. So many special games from those years.
i love after after all these years to see people still talking about these great games that filled my childhood
This gane and Hunter: The Reckoning was incredible back in the day. I will say that while Ultimate Alliance 1 and 2 didn't quite hit, MUA3 on Switch was fantastic. I'd love the 4th to be more MUTANT focused and really get deep in the roster... ❤❤❤
I miss Leigh-Allyn Baker as Jean, what a loss :(
This is hands down the best Xmen game ever ! Man I had fun completing this and it was challenging as hell too
Love the game. Played 2 months ago. Love the feature that you can start a new game with the stats of the previous completed save - was able to level everyone to L99. Using Iron Man was awesome but Nightcrawler was my favourite overall as I got to jump to areas that weren't available yet as there were locked doors and force shields.
X-Men legends 2 was fun, but 1 is the best
Love sabertooth’s look in this, makes him and Logan look more like brothers
Angel: "Ha, one of my mutant powers is money!"
Does that make trump an omega level mutant? Lol
@@ajlemuel969 I'm sure in that diseased, malformed lump of putrid flesh he calls a mind, it does.
Tbh, being billionaire is more useful superpower than having a bunch of feathers coming out of your back.
Dawg watchin these retrospectives it’s literally like goin back in time to when I was a kid just sitting there admiring a righteous game. I love that the X-men legends games still hold up today. Keep up the awesome work man.
Thanks for giving the modding community a mention at the end! I really do hope you try MUA 1 mods someday, as they truly do enhance the experience. (Perhaps you could even make a full video about them someday, hmm? ...Wishful thinking.)
As for Marvel games I'd like retrospectives of, one personal childhood game of mine that I'd like to see covered is Spider-Man: Friend or Foe. Looking back on it now, it's pretty much a "baby's first Ultimate Alliance", although as a kid, the idea of playing as the villains after beating them was really cool (and what kid DIDN'T want to control the likes of Venom?). Because of things like MUA 1 modding (where I can just play a full team of 4 Spidey villains if I wanted), I myself have no real incentive to seek the game out again, but I'd be interested in hearing your thoughts on it, if you're interested.
Haha I do think that’s a fun idea! I need to scratch out some time and try to get them running on my pc. I’m anxious to try out iron fist and that 50 character roster!
Friend or foe is a good choice! I’ll see if I can pick that one up at a local used game shop next time I’m out. I’m really interested to see if my perception of that game holds up after revisiting it
You can already play as those villains in other games without modding
Yeah, Steve Blum owns the Wolverine character at this point when it comes to voicing the role
I adored the Legends games so much as a kid. I'd absolutely love a remaster/reboot of the series.
I'm not even 7 minutes into the video and I can already confidently say that Logan flipping the bird with his middle claw is my favorite thing in this whole game lmfao
Wolverine changing outfits was funny. Thanks for these two videos especially this one. Absolutely needed this as I love retrospectives on games I never got a chance to play. Brilliant stuff.
The thing about the character roster. I've extracted sound files from PS2 copy of the game, and found out that it had voice clips of all exculsive characters. I think, they were supposed to be in the original release, but were cut for some reason.
I've compiled all playble characters voice clips: czcams.com/video/90tiT-bD-8Y/video.html
They really don’t make games like this anymore and it’s so sad
Loved this game, as an x-men stan, I would kill for a modern game like this within the x-men universe. This was one is definitely my favourite between XML and MUA!
Awesome video and game they were made by people who loved the characters and you could feel that
LOVE THIS GAME!!! Can't wait to finish my Xmen Legends 1 playthrough to then start recording this game!!! Too many great memories
They should just re-release X-men legends 😩
There still is no better x men game to this day
Maybe it's just missing old games but this is one id love a remake for
Spent a summer playing this with 2 friends. We all had our own characters we got to play as and level up. It was good times.
So thats why the cinematics looked amazing and appropriately expensive lol cuz its done by the legendary Blur Studios
This game was my childhood alongside mua1 and 2
I'm playing the first one for the first time right now, I can't wait to get this one. I'm going back and buying all these old systems and old games that I never played mainly superhero games there's all kinds of really good ones that I missed having never bought a game system up until PS4, now I'm buying all kinds of used old systems and waiting for PS5 to have the possibility of being purchased .
This and Spider-Man 2 were the first superhero games I ever had on my GameCube and I’ll forever be grateful for the endless memories
Loved this game. Marvel Heroes was an expanded version with everyone in the MCU but it got canned, it was so good
I really want a new X-men game like if they announce x-men legends 3 I'll be so excited
Same! Would love to see any big roster x-men game announced
The only problem with x men legends 3 mind you I don’t hate the legends series I’m just saying one issue being the fact that this game and ultimate alliance have the same gameplay not sure you can ever go back to a x men only type of game like this not when the public is use to ultimate alliance that’s the only issue with men legends 3 not saying I wouldn’t like one just saying it’s very unlikely
@@lestatcanada fair point I'd still love to play x-men legends 3 there hasn't been a X-men game in so long and I'd love it if the developers of the new game ascent made a X-men game or maybe netherrealm make a X-men fighting game like the X-men mutant academy games I'm just so starved for X-men content the like the Fox X-men movies and I love the X-men comics but I want new X-men games and a new animated x-men show
man I would love to see remasters of these games For the New generation consoles. Be so awesome To be able to just play it in general on the PS5 or xbox

Raven really came into their own in the mid 2000's. I think they did the comics and movies justice.
Sometimes I go about my daily life and then my head randomly thinks about Iceman's Ice Sled SFX. That's how ingrained my life was in this game when I was a kid lol
