- To be a Ceremonial Guardsman in the United States Air Force you have to maintain bearing at all times, even if you have a rubber chicken in front of your face. The instructors at the USAF Honor Guard Tech School constantly challenge the newcoming Airmen's bearing, and the students pay the penalty if they cannot maintain it.

it's ridicolous that so many are failing this test. How can you know that you have to maintain bearing to get this job and go there, knowing you can not maintain bearing when something funny happens?
We had this in theatre class and it's true, not all can do that. But why do you go there if you are one of these who can not do that?
I can do that no problem. Maybe all the others just had a sunshine life. Just think about anything really sad. For me it was my dog passing away. I would not let out a single laugh no matter what happened. Easy 100%. So easy. Just cover your thoughts in your head with something super sad.
and to this day i can keep a super serious face, no matter what happens, just thinking about my dog who passed away 17 years ago :,( it's also a way that I can cry on command. I think over the years I figured out many people don't really have strong emotions, positive or negative.
I can not imagine not having this skill. I can not really understand people who must laugh when they think about something sad. Can they not focus their mind? Do they not feel sad in their memory? idk.

Its funny how setting is everything when it comes to humor. Someone putting a rubber chicken in your face and making it honk would usually be neutral or even slightly irritating, but when you're put into a situation where you know your not allowed to laugh it suddenly becomes the most hilarious thing thats ever happened to you

In boot camp, while standing on line, sometimes we'd make stupid faces at our platoon mates who were standing across from us. This was usually when one or more DIs were walking up and down the squad bay talking (screaming), and it was extremely difficult to not lose your shit in that moment. If someone makes faces like that at me in any other situation, I'm just gonna think they're crazy and probably only slightly raise an eyebrow.
Boot camp was a weird time.

I was a Civil Air Patrol cadet (auxiliary of the USAF, think of it as similar to JROTC but not in school and with a bit more going on) and we had an Honor Guard Academy as a National activity. I did it one year and we were trained by an actual USAF Honor Guard. We were subjected to the rubber chicken too, along with a lot of goofy behavior that was intended to train us on maintaining bearing and keeping a hand on our rifles at all times.

Not everyone lives in the US. I am Canadian, I am a medic in the army and I joined 7 years ago. During our basic military qualifications (BMQ) the instructors would do this to keep the moral of the platoon high, by making us laugh, and whoever laughed had to do 20 push-ups. I accept your apology but don't go attacking people like that in real life, it is a serious crime (Stolen valor). Especially, if you are wrong and the person turns out to a veteran or an active serviceman. Best of luck in the AF and I am sure you will do great.

whenever we have bearing breakers, the most important thing is to remember something that makes you really angry or sad and to focus on it. it’ll help sober you up
I had these myself in the training, and let me tell you there's nothing funnier than some anonymous soldier randomly farting while standing there, thus making the whole platoon laugh and sergeants yelling DO NOT LAUGH!!!! It's near impossible to hold the laugh
The aspect that you might miss is that these people have been going through rigorous training and practices for months at this time, making them way more susceptible to even the slightest comedic object.
I think its just the setting and the totality of the situation. Like you expect somebody to shout at you to get you to loose composure, but you don't expect a guy in military fatigurs with a fucking rubber chicken.
