    For the stops, I used a vertical piece screwed to the front face of the ramp, that runs from the ground up to about 3"-4" above the parking top. I can hit it firmly with the tire without fear of going over, makes getting positioned on the ramp so much more confident and enjoyable.

    Great video. About 40 years ago, a good neighbor let me use his sheet metal ramps for my 72 Coupe De Ville. While I was underneath the car, I heard some creaking and shot out from underneath just in time to watch the ramp slowly collapse before my very eyes. My neighbor was shocked. From then on, I built similar ramps to what you made but back then, I used 2X4's criss crossed three wide and they worked out well. I used window lift-handles at the end for carrying. They're solid so I don't worry about being underneath the car. I also use jack stands because even though the ramps are solid, what if a tire lets-go and leaks?

    When you take into consideration the costs of metal jack stands and trying to prop them up in just the right position compared with the cost of two planks of wood and a few hours of work, this is, actually, far cheaper...and safer in my opinion.

    Thanks. I built these longer and wider for use with a SS Camaro with stock Eagle tires and a full size p/u truck. Each ramp layer is a combination of 2 pcs of 2x4s and 1 pcs of 2x6. First layer ran the long way and second layer ran the short way across. All glued and screwed and painted white. Very heavy but solid. 78 inches long. Ramps are garage shelves when not in use. Late model Camaros and Vets damage very easy when they are being jacked up. Also made short ramps for rear to use in combination when changing the diff. oil.

    What about making these so you can break away the low part (front) once you have the car on the top. This way it would give you room to get under the side and put a jack there if you need to get it a bit higher, etc. I've seen the plastic racing jacks have similar where you can slide the lower portion out of the way. Maybe at the start of the 4th layer. You could have some kind of bracket that holds them together while ramping up and then easy to remove once the car is up.

    Just my two cents when adding the next layer, it’s best to leave enough space so that the centerline of the wheels can fully rest on the bottom plate before it starts to climb on the next plate. I would assume it would minimize the chance of slipping

      That's really cool!!! I left the top one unbeveled to hopefully make it feel a little bit different as I was driving up. Not sure it makes much of a difference, I would practice with a spotter until you get the feel of counting each time the vehicle steps up a level. With a few tries (and a spotter) most people can get the hang of it pretty quick.

      I have smooth concrete floors in my garage. I had plastic ramps skid on occasion, could be that. I also didn’t add the last 16” piece (I only purchased 3 of 2x8x8), so there is a slight weight difference relative to your specs.
      I’ll try in the driveway tomorrow.

    • @Toys4Life
      @Toys4Life  Pƙed 11 měsĂci

      Did you bevel The edge of the first board? The key is to get the weight of the car on top of the ramp as soon as possible, then it'll hold it in place. Also, be careful with the brakes, there is a massive front bias so if you're hitting the brakes and driving up it will push the ramps. Practice carefully using your emergency brake as that applies it to the rear brakes to control your speed. Of course do all this at your own risk, I'm just offering you suggestions that you may or may not want to try.

    • @Toys4Life

    Hi. Great video. I have a question. I have a jack and am happy to jack the car up. Would it be safe to use the same concept that you've used here with wooden blocks (I.e stacking a number of blocks and securing them together) and putting them under the wheels of the car, then lowering the jack down - essentially using them as 'wheel' stands?

    • @blitz8619
      @blitz8619 Pƙed 2 lety

      It would work. You have to make sure the blocks are big enough to provide a stable base. And put a stop on the front and back so the tire wouldnt roll forward or backward off the block.
      Another good idea is to put a handle to transport them easily.

      Yes, they are called cribs. I built some with 2x4s criss crossed. Wood has very high compression strength. Very safe. Much safer than jack stands for sure. I won't get under my car at all without putting the wheels on cribs, even for oil changes. These ramps would be equally effective if you just need to raise one end. Don't need a jack.
