  • These are my personal experiences - not necessarily everyone has these thoughts. Big4's are great organisations to work with and many people make great career here. I have worked in 2 Big 4's for 5.5 years and have had a very enriching experience with great opportunities.
    I worked in Big 4's from 2012 to 2017

I given interview for EY , at final round I started asking many questions about job, role, responsibilities, project etc later I came to know they outsource resources to their clients for short term projects kind of they have some banking clients ey deploy us in thier client location for work and after project completes we need to come back to EY it's a clearly kind of contractual recruitment what small companies do the same Job.
I finally informed interviewer if you recruit me for your core projects then only I join EY if you people outsource me to banking clients to do their work then i won't join. Finally they dropped my profile.

From my experience, the Big 4 employees are grossly underpaid when compared to the industry. Plus the work-life balance is not that great and after a point, you will realise that partners have a god-like complex. Having switched, now when Big 4s approach me they find it difficult to match my compensation even at the Associate Director level although I have considerably less experience than an average AD. Plus in the industry the work-life balance is amazing, and most importantly people don't have partner-like arrogance.

Absolutely correct. On a lighter note i sometimes feel i should ask arihant - kya fook rha hai bhai? He doesnot know the salary of CFOs in market. Gone are the days when Big 4 were the highest pay maker. including partner level. CFO moving into strategic partners for 10 CR - 25 CR plus salaries... he is absolutely having no clue abt the range of salaries in market

Hi Arihant. Thank you for such valuable information. I am working in one of the big 4 in offshore practise in Advisory with core work of internal controls testing for Sox and SOC 1 for banking and financial service client for almost around 2 years. I ultimately have to switch big 4 as I prefer a good work life balance. I am a chartered accountant. Also i want to explore manufacturing/fmcg industry...
    1. My first question is should i switch as i have got my first promotion now (though I am still a consultant and will become a senior consultant after 2 years) or should i wait for 1-2 years more in big 4 to grow my package. I am not getting other options other than banking and finance in my company to explore.
    2. Moreover, i feel like switching to a product based company to have more practical understanding of work and for better work life balance.
    3. Who according to you has more work life balance mnc's or indian industry jobs.
4.Can i again switch back to consultancy (not big 4) after working for some time in product based company.
    5. Which according to you has better work life balance working in manufacturing or fmcg or banking/fsi.

I think it depends on person to person or big 4 in which you are working . I have been associated with KPMG India (stat audit) from last 3 years and I could say that I have got good exposure here. There is no need to work on sat Sunday unless extremely required for me it depends every 6 month or so. There is no requirement wherein you need to pitch in for sales/marketing at least till manager.

There is decent scope in industry for IDT. I dont say there is great scope because many companies prefer to have consultants to taken care of entire IDT compliance requirements, but many orgs have in house too. So its a split situation and depends on which city you are in and the industry exposure you get while working in Big4
