- Part one of a film showing trains at Westminster railway station in the 1990s, 2011, 2012 and 2014.
This film mostly shows the station before it was rebuilt for the Jubilee Line. At one stage Big Ben is heard chiming in the background.
Trains seen are C stock on the Circle Line and D stock on the District Line.
Part 2 is here:
• Westminster 1990s - 20...
I sort of wish the Circle and District bits had been left uncovered (wasn’t something built on top of it?), but the JLE at Westminster is my favourite station on the entire network. This is how you make steel and concrete look beautiful. It looks like the Death Star, and Darth Vader wouldn’t be out of place here.
its how I imagine the crew quarters in a space ship might be!
Wow that's one of the most epic station transformations in such a short time.
Some very nice footage here Simon, very nice to see the C Stock, sadly never preserved.
CoachAlex1996 (AlexMetroman) whilst its a shame that the C stock was never preserved in a "working train" format at least there is one DM, albeit only in refurbished format, which is *very* different internally compared with the original format. Chalk and cheese! Plus of course also video footage. Things could have been worse - for instance, the unique F stock was completely scrapped.
Its amazing how the District-circle line station went from being almost open air to being completely underground. So I guess the jubilee line station excavated before Portculis house was built? It must have been a hugely complex task, excavating the huge hole for the Jubille line station and building Portcullis house above it without causing too much disruption to the circle and district lines.Would love to see some pictures of the construction works if you have any links :)
Big Ben developed a tilt as a result of the excavation work to build the Jubilee line platforms.
The Circle and District tracks had to be lowered in order to rebuild Westminster station.
The clip with the big ben chime is awesome
oh.....That means that Westminster isn't fully covered before the jubilee line rebuilt
They should have kept some old architecture.
I loved taking the tube in the 1990's.
It certainly lost its charm, miss the old station but I suppose changes have to be... Great video
Even though I was born in July 1974, and traveled on the Underground alot, I have long since forgotten what Westminster station looked like prior to the JLE. I sorely miss the Underground of the old.
СПАСИБО!
Translation: THANK YOU!
Did you ever film at Finsbury Park in the '90s? I was just wondering about a possible Finsbury Park contrasts video
ScotRail380018 sorry, apart from a few class 313 still images in the 1970's I did not film there.
I wish that they kept D-stock for off peak. Glad of S-stock during rush hour though, also prefer the S-stock over C-stock and A-stock (cause I never travelled on circle or met before !)
I hated the C stock lol
Westminster station has changed since it was refurbished and revamped because of the Jubilee Line extension which opened in 1997.
1999
Contrast is the perfect way to described this... Talk about chalk and cheese...
Look At Westminster before The Jubilee Line Came.
What's in place of the old ticket hall now?
+Tom Jardine The new ticket hall! The station was lowered and rebuilt in the basement of a new building. A complete and dramatic change.
Do you have a footage of westminster station with a Full-hour Big Ben Chime?
alas not, sorry!
Nice footage which showed the reality of both the original and the current, I liked the original, at platform level, similar to St James’s Park, with Westminster being rebuilt rebuilt under running conditions, the track level was (I understand), lowered at Westminster.
These days the new station is featureless, bland and complex to navigate due to the JLE with misleading signage, and easy to make the wrong move, even getting to the sub-suffice platforms from street level was confusing enough, non the less, it a genius in the making.
Trains in corporate livery: This was In reality a assist the partially sighted, with interiors of the old C and D stock having grab rails coloured to assist.
When was Westminster refurbish
As part of building the Jubilee line in the 1990's
It wasn't refurbished; it was rebuilt.
Circle Line C Tube Stock
That's not a C Stock train, it is a S8 Stock train.
@@PSYCHIC_PSYCHO ...there are no S Stock trains in this video, these are C and D Stock.
@@dez3540 My comment to which you replied to was a wind-up; I often post wind-up comments about the Underground; for example someone once posted a comment on a YT Victoria Line video saying how much he likes the 2009 TS, to which I replied: "That's a Flying Scotsman steam engine train emerging from a Tube tunnel" 🤪
@@PSYCHIC_PSYCHO Hahaha, I love it! 😜
I was genuinely thinking, "...surely they're not serious" 😂
I like the new station.
the Jubilee line section makes me think of how a space station will be - all metallic, etc.
The first two trains are in their "original upainted format". Is this supposed to mean "unpainted"?
SimonHellinger yes, I said it that way because they became painted after refurbishment.
citytransportinfo I wanted to say that I think it was a spelling mistake. I thought there should be an 'n' after the 'u'
SimonHellinger oh dear! yes, I made a spelling mistake and since the video editing software does not include a spell checker so I did not notice this. The same mistake applies to both the C and D stock captions - this would have been because I duplicated the C stock caption and then minimally altered it for the D stock. Whilst I can correct the film thats on my pc I cannot correct the CZcams version as this would require that it is deleted and then re-uploaded with a new url. So its going to have to stay as it is. Thanks for telling me about this and all the best for 2015.
I really like the open LU stations, so Westminster is a sad loss. It makes it far worse that the new station is so claustrophobic. They should have left at least one further open storey above tracks and platforms with the soffit of the overbuild then ca. 9 m above track level.
Claustrophobic? 😂 The station is huge...
