- It’s that time where we stop and reflect on the first half of the homeschool year. If you are new here, I am a homeschooling mom to one child. This is my son’s 9th grade year. As you can see in the video, the year has went great and we have only added one thing. After much thought and prayer, we have added The Good and the Beautiful Level 7to our lineup, with plans to use the high school levels 1-3.
This video is a part of a collaboration hosted by Davene @CalmintheChaosHomeschool and Shauna @HomegrownHomeschool Thank you both so much for hosting!

I just love how flexible you are with curriculum and using things at different times. You completely tailor your son’s education to him. 😊
Thank you so much! I try hard to do what he needs.
I love that you’re teaching him how to take notes. That should be a class everyone gets before going to college. That would have been soooooo helpful.
Right, that should be taught in high school at least.
I just put my eighth grader back into Good and Beautiful level 7 too. She did do one of the level 8 book studies earlier this year. The level 7 is more challenging than the book studies because the book studies are meant to be reviews and time fillers for those who are not ready for high school level. Students who complete level 7 are ready for the high school level, which is how I explained it to my eighth grader.
Every time I try to walk away from Good and Beautiful with any of my three kids I regret it and end up returning to it. It's solid and thorough as well as Good and Beautiful
I completely agree. Thanks for letting me know about the book studies.
Please make a video on how to seamlessly add TGTB LA to IEW. This is me right now thinking for next year. We are going to start IEW S&S next fall, and I want just a little more grammar than fix it grammar. We love TGTB and have been using it for years. 😊
I will definitely try once we have used it a little more. I’m hoping I can combine the two.
💯 agree with your thoughts on TGTB. We just brought it back also. It’s the perfect loop schedule of assignments.
Thanks!
Hi there! We needed a break from FIx-It & IEW also so this semester we are going to use TGTB. 🌻
I didn’t know you could just get the book and not the box from Talkbox mom! Thanks for the tip! I always thought the boxes were expensive too
It’s a much cheaper option.
My son, a 6th grader, is very much like yours. He wants to throw in the towel the minute something gets hard. Sometimes, they just need that little extra push. Yes, they will be uncomfortable at first, but the feeling they get when they realize they’re making progress in something they thought they were incapable of doing is priceless.
You are so right!
This is SO helpful as I begin to plan my eldest child’s course of study next year! We’re also planning to take on GRH history units (1-4) in a year…would love to hear how you paired that with the SCM resource mentioned in the video! Thanks.
We don’t read from Stories of America every time we do a history lesson, but some days they pair up perfectly.
I hope The Good and the Beautiful works great for your son.
Thank you!
Your video made me have go look up some of the curriculum you mentioned. Love it!
I love how flexible you are with your homeschool. Looks like your son is learning amazing things like car maintenance, Japanese, and Cinematography. ❤
Thank you! 😊
I love watching your videos! Your school days sound so fun!😊 I love your gentle but firm approach to encouraging your son to push himself a little harder each time!
Thank you so much!!
I loved hearing an update! I checked out a video or two recently of TGTB high school LA and it looked good! I’m glad I still have a year before I have to make high school choices!
9th grade has went so well. It’s silly how nervous I was about high school.
Thank you for sharing how you do learn math fast, that was really helpful!
You are so welcome!
Totally get the whole Good and the Beautiful situation. I feel like that is why it didn’t work for my daughter a few years ago either. I do have my eye on the uppper levels though for possibly the future :) it’s all about shifting to suit what they need in each season. I love how in tune you are with your son
I’m crossing my fingers that it is exactly what he needs for high school.
I love how you are so flexible and honest plans change. Is there any way you can share an example of how you make all this fit in your schedule. How many days out of the week do you use U.S Hist units? And so on. I appreciate all the information you have shared 🙂
Great idea! I sure can!
@@HomeSweetHomeschoolLife thank you, I'll be waiting for that video
Gathered Round has a life skills program?! I've got to check that out. 🌻
We are really enjoying it so far!
I sooo needed this update! I am feeling exactly the same way about higher level language arts. I just asked another CZcams mom @Lovethemwell for help with literature. I am in total agreement with you with Fix it Grammar. I just couldn’t put my finger on it. We started using Easy Grammar and Daily Grams for 7th grade. It is working so well for us. I’m still at lost for Literature because we have also read about 6 novels so far 😊. We may just use the Abeka Reader I already purchased used to finish out the year. I also wanted to thank you for sharing how you use LMF, I have applied your method and it has been a game changer with my son. Thank you so much for sharing and keep making video for us boy mom. We need the encouragement and advice ❤.
How awesome that Easy Grammar and Daily Grams are working for you! I love it. I think it’s a great idea to read the Abeka reader.
I am so happy to hear that LMF is working too!
Thank you so much for watching and for always chatting with me in the comments.
Loved hearing your recap! That entrepreneurship unit sounds great, and so does Living Healthy. Some of these neat classes make me super excited for the high school years 😂.
High school has been great so far!
Thanks for the update, I appreciate all your curriculum related videos. Good luck to your son with the TGTB LA level 7, My daughter completed that last year, and she is working through the level 8 book studies now before moving on to the High School levels.
Is she enjoying the book studies? They look like they would be great.
@@HomeSweetHomeschoolLife Yes, she is enjoying them. Each level 8 book study (I'm using them for the beginning of 9th grade) only takes 6-7 weeks to complete so their short and easy. I'm reading the books that are assigned too and they have been very good. I've read online parents say to skip these, but I would recommend completing them because the books are so good and the work in the book study is a small amount to do each day.
@@pacificnorthwestgirl2725I am definitely going to consider using those.
Sounds like high school has started well! Do you have a review or more information on the Gather Round Life Skills Unit Study?
So far, we are enjoying it. We have only completed through lesson 6. My son has learned something new each lesson, so that’s a win.
Masterbooks does have a high school Biology, Chemistry, and Physics
I will look into those.
We used level 7 for 9th and it was great! 🎉
That is so good to hear. Are you using the high school levels now?
Ohhhh I forgot GR has the entrepreneurship study! My daughter is doing a class for that in co-op and that would be such a great resource to work in. So glad you mentioned this.
We loved it!
New here from collab! I love finding channels homeschooling older kids, it seems to be harder to find! We've used the thinking tree journals periodically as well 😊
Welcome! I’m glad you are here.
Essentials in writing and Essentials in Literature and Easy Grammar have all been good
Thanks for the suggestions!
I forgot about our history timeline book. We barely used it Oops. Looks like a good lineup.
The great thing is that you can pick it up and start anytime.
Glad to hear chemistry is going well! We love experiments.
Have you heard about Progeny Press literature guides? I may try one of those for my high schooler.
I’ve never looked into those.
We are starting navigating friendships tomorrow :)
❤️
Hi Ashley! My son needs extra help with Algebra, so you’ve sold me on the Learn Math Fast. I want to buy from Amazon, since it’s a few dollars cheaper and free shipping, but I don’t believe it comes with a password for the LMF website. My question is, is it vital to having that access for the printable worksheets? Thank you for all you do!
It isn’t vital, but if you want the supplemental worksheets or you want to resale the book, you may want them. I would shoot the creators an email. I am sure they will let you know the password.
@@HomeSweetHomeschoolLife thank you!
Hello! I was wondering how you are tracking your high school stuff now. I remember your video talking about how you were trying to track time (minutes and hours) and that it was overwhelming. Are you still trying to track his time spent somehow?
That was a bit overwhelming. Right now, I am keeping daily and test grades. We are shooting for completion of a course, just like you would do in public school. Keeping up with the time was a lot of work.
Have you done a video on how you are combining MB and GR Chemistry? Do you think GR Chemistry us complicated to follow?
I haven’t made a video about it, but we do a lesson a day from MB. When we get to a quiz in MB, the next day we do a lesson from Gather Round. The GR Chemistry is very easy to follow. We have really enjoyed it.
@@HomeSweetHomeschoolLife Is the GR Chemistry basically 1/2 a semester?
It’s only 20 lessons.
Can you use a theme base writing from IEW without ever learning how to teach the writing course from them? I was looking into their fairytale writing and looking at the samples and the teacher guide it looks like you could but, I would love to hear from someone else who has used IEW. I think anybody and everybody always likes the easy way out because, I know I do in some cases. It's great to challenge your children because, they need to know how to be able to get through in life as they get older. We know as adults that life isn't easy. Thank you.
They recommend that you go through the Teacher Training before you do the theme based writing. I did it last year when they offered the free premium membership for 3 months. You can sign up when they do the 12 days of giveaways after Christmas each year.
Hi!! New subscriber here from the collab! I love the update. So good that he’s interested in learning Japanese! We are a multilingual family! Looking forward to connect more! ❤
Thanks for subbing!
