So I JUST discovered this fine series, over a decade after it began to air. I'm loving it so far, especially the great talent of Michael C. Hall as David Fisher. In series one, he begins the story as a deeply unhappy, closeted gay man. Thought I'd piece together David's many coming-out moments since I couldn't find any evidence of anyone else doing this on YT, yet. So here we go.

I watch her face when she indulges in the appreciation of the love in front of her. I even try to feel how she felt with her body language and facial features. Such a beautiful way to recognize that the two gentlemen were in love and struggle to contain the feelings in a public space. She sees them restraining their feelings. She is smothered by it too. So beautiful moment

I'll always remember how David's relationship with Rico evolved throughout the show - turbulent but towards better understanding of one another. The episode where they hold an opera funeral for a gay lighting designer was one of the turning points. If I recall correctly, when the lighting designer's lover said "We shared our hearts, our body, and our soul", the camera panned to Rico's face right after "our body" and Rico looked subtly touched - then he again smiled when the opera singer started singing Puccini's. That was really poignant I thought.

@lucaboden I get that. Technically I am bisexual, I've slept with many women but I do tend to fall for men much more frequently, so I don't tell anybody that I am sexually attracted to women... not because I feel any shame in it, but because I don't want people to alter their idea of what my identity is... perhaps it's not a healthy mentality, but the fear of family and friends asking me about the plight of being a member of the LGBT community and giving me the connotation of a 'victim', when I feel like that compassion is better directed toward others, has stopped me from saying anything- if there came a point in my life where I fell in love with a woman and wanted to be with her eternally I would say something, but if that doesn't occur, I'd rather have my sex life be a freeing one but one that simultaneously doesn't alter my identity or box me in, in the eyes of others.
This mentality is probably reinforced by the fact that I do have moderate bipolar, which I manage well, but the stigma does follow me and I have immense disdain when any emotional reaction is chalked up to 'bipolar' and not a genuine, organic or even authentic reaction on any level (so this is something I've also started to hide). Perhaps not healthy, but having to conform to these stigmas or people assuming that identity is reflective of stereotypes really does a number on a person's sense of self.

I think Rico had gay experiences, or was possibly bi. For evidence there's this scene, and the immense hatred he displayed toward his cousin after he caught him cousin having gay sex in his house. He could have been a homophobe, but I think his character was the way the show addressed the shame hetero people may feel about wandering thoughts.
Rico's came into his own over the course of the show, and accepting gay people was part of it. Overall, Six Feet Under was a great show for helping me understand that the gay life style isn't that alien, it's just heavily stigmatized.

I have seen this series a few times I never thought Rico was closet gay or bi at all.The problem he had was he was raised antigay and the one he saw was married and had kids and was having gay sex.He had a problem with that guy personally and it just added to his dislike of gay men in general.
To be married to someone and have kids with them and find out they are gay is fucked up.Even some gay people would not be cool with that and would say he should of divorced his wife first.
Since Rico had known David for years it helped him to overcome things about gays plus Rico wasnt super religious or closed minded.
In some ways Rico and Nate were way more liberal than David.I could see Rico smoking weed or doing crazy sex acts with Vanessa.

Rico personifies the lower middle class Hispanic male who freaks out when the world doesn't conform to his hard-wired mindsets. Fortunately that is changing as men learn that there is more to a person than his sexual orientation. David's speech at the church service shows that he is a man with enormous courage and the faith-based imagination to know that everyone is worthy of love in the eyes of God. Very powerful deliverance of truth, and yet so few are ready to hear it (dead fish in those church pews).
