    The color is Pennsy's DGLE (Dark Green Locomotive Enamel), they used it on nearly every steam locomotive ever built and even applied it to most of their diesel fleet.

    Thanks for the review! Brunswick green is so close to black if you weather your engines you could just use black and no one would ever know. As for the keystone number plate on the front, Pennsy used the Keystone to denote passenger engines and the round "Brunswick" plates for freight engines.

    I always see the BLI smoke units as a space holder for boiler barker speakers. The smoke unit also won’t melt the boiler on this, it’s supposed to be diecast. If it does melt then dang that unit was hot!

    Though I think this is a beautiful locomotive, I definitely agree with you 100% on the smoke unit, speaker and pricing. Manufacturers across the board are trying their hardest to price most people out of the hobby. That will bite them in the long run.

  • @jaymz5267

    I recently purchased this engine and I really didn’t have any problems with it. Even when I ran it over plastic frogs on my club layout, the lights never flickered or stuttered. What’s nice is that it has a built-in capacitor that keeps it running off the tracks for at least 4 seconds. The only issue I had was changing the address to the cab number. Other than that, the engine smokes like a chimney, runs great, has pretty decent sounds, pulls well, and has nice detail. If I had to rate it, I’d probably give it an 8/10.

    That model looks awesome - Have to say, I'm very tempted! They do have them for an almost reasonable price on the BLI outlet. BUT 100% agree with you on the price these companies are charging. Its really gettign out of hand, esp still trying to push the Paragon stuff. Most I've ever spent was about $300 when they first released the K4. In the distant past, I've got some great deal from the outlet store. The PRR P70 4 pack for next to nothing and full set of SP morning daylight coaches, but even there great deals are becoming scarce.
    Same with my main collecting interests UK loco's getting to over 200 pounds has just just stopped me cold! Just not going to spend that money on stuff that has a high chance of a QA issue! Really wanted a Hush Hush and the new full fat P2. Have too much anyway and no where to run it!

    In regard to the future of the hobby, it will thrive in places where railroads are still used on a daily basis by the vast majority of the public (Europe and East Asia). North America and Australia are less densely populated, spread out, and continental size countries where railroad travel is not convenient or worthwhile. Railroads (passenger service mainly) today only work in small, densely populated countries. Freight however works in the latter places because of the long distances traveled so it makes sense to pack a long string of freight cars when you have the right-of-way.
    People only care about what they see in front of their faces. If it isn't there then they see no reason to get in to it.

    I have been priced out for a few years now. When BLI first came out I had four different steam locomotives from their line. As much as I would like one of their new offerings, I cannot afford nor justify spending over four hundred dollars. I suspect those who deem it affordable do so from their income mindset. A doctor may think it's affordable, though he does not take into account, not all of us receive a doctors salary. It's very much like commercials for home equity loans which offer low rates. It comes down to "restrictions apply", meaning they are not advertising to all of us. As always, I enjoyed your thoughtful review. Jim.

      Uuugh.. yes.. the pricing issue--it's only going to get worse from here. Either the prices are going to keep going up so that the profits come from only a small amount of reasonably well-off collectors or all of the companies are going to price themselves out of business. If the latter happens then the prices are going to go up on the used market.

    With Broadway Limited I always wait a few years when their prices are cut in half or wait for a refurbished one from their store. Never pay MSRP or regular street price when they come out because like you said for what they charge is outrageous. I would be more forgiving if they had TCS/LokSound/Tsunami decoders, better speakers, and smoke units that were functional. Of course we all know why they don't change anything and it is because $$$. Cheaper to recycle what they have in-house than to outsource to someone who does it better.

    • @DoctorHobby
      @DoctorHobby  Před rokem +1

      Definitely cheaper for them to produce their own sound DCC chips. I'm fairly certain the manufacturing price is less than $20, but the markup is more closer to $100, so if they're following that to its logical conclusion, they never ever offer DCC ready.

      @@DoctorHobby Good question. On the BLI FB I talked about it, and to be honest the details are pretty high up there, though the side deck plates are a little too thick. They could of used brass or plastic, but that can be a nitpick for some. The back of the headlight lamp for the 1927 model is not accurate, but I understand they were trying to hide the wires however, I believe they had the capability to hide those wires better. So the details make up a solid 3 for the Lindbergh version. 2.5 for the rest since the pilot wheels are not painted black for some reason. A nit pick, but I have seen they can do better, especially for the details for that ATSF Blue Goose review you have done. The mechanism is fairly sold after I opened up the model. The E6 is different than your typical BLI steam engine, rather you need to unscrew four holes instead of 3 to take off the shell. Gears look to be of higher quality. The engine ran very silently, so I am pleased that BLI has improved the gear plastic quality over the past few decades of their existence. With those traction tires the model is very solid also as a puller, so in terms of mechanics it is an overall 3. So we are 6 right now, so what happened to the 4 other points right? Well, like it seems to be with a lot of people, it really is those electronics. After seeing your review of the E6, I had to mention the possible failures of the smoke unit, and for me, I do not like models that are not really reliable. So, a "spin the wheel" smoke unit is a minus 1. The decoder is pretty much the same as P3, but with more capacitors on board. Sounds are rather unimpressive. Personally, I compare BLI's "QSI sounds" to early 2000's Lionel TMCC. The chuffing is unique, but does not sound like steam from ESU, or TCS. Again, a lot of the sound files are recycled from P3, so I am not really impressed with that either. For electronics it 1 point minus. The final nail is the outrageous price of close to 500$. That is close to 240$ away from their upcoming S2 Brass-Hybrid. I know people can get them from retailers for 480$, but we forget tax and shipping. I personally got mine from a small store for 380$ with 6$ shipping. I still think that is a little high, (Realistically between 325-340$ as is, is more acceptable), but I got it, because I wanted "the" E6s. So, we loose another 1-2 points.
      We get 6/10 total, for an average model to close to slightly above average model. It is not bad, but it certainly is not great. So, I plan to do what I like to do and hard wire TCS WOW to my BLI steam. Once that is done, yes I lose smoke, but reliability goes up, and I have better electronics so the model is closer to a 7-8/10. Closer to a solid 8 than to a 7. That would make a big difference for BLI generally. If they also had the price 380$ average with TCS WOW from the factory, then that is one more point higher to be close to a 8-9/10. The last remaining would be minor details and nitpicks.
