While out on a recent family camping trip to the San Rafael Swell, we got to use our new Biolite Firepit and do some cooking on it as well. In the past we've been using the Solo Stove Ranger fire pit and have been impressed with that. So it was fun to check out another fire pit on the market and see how it compares. Time will tell with how it holds up to consistent use and time in the elements. A full follow up review to follow soon.

Huge fan of Biolite for what they do in 3rd world countries. Got a review of their solar home 620. Ive been impressed with everything ive seen from them. That item would be great for car camping.
Exactly why I just bought this BioLite FirePit+ today. I am gathering my camping supplies over the winter months so I can be ready to car camp around Alaska on summer weekends.

I would love to see you do a video on efficient family camping packing and unpacking strategies. It always seems like it takes forever to get ready for a trip and then unpack from a trip. It may even keep us from going out as much because it seems like such a huge task Any tips on making it smoother and quicker?

Its basically the whole point of a fire. People have become weak and seem to have lost their way and sacrificing heat for less smoke.
that is one heck of a good looking piece of kit right there. We just love camping but have missed it this year due to the Pandemic. I bought a heat deflector for my Solo Stove, it really helps spread the heat out.
I'd like to see what the metal looks like after 4-5 uses. And clean out from the grease
Yeah it’s going to be interesting to see how it holds up. Another guy (primal outdoors) made a video on this same pit and the metal mesh for him had a ton of rust. So far after a few burns, including beyond what is shown in this video it’s doing pretty good.
@@BackcountryExposure another reviewer had stated that using Rustoleum High Heat paint keeps it protected. Just re-apply from time to time. For $7 a spray paint can, seems like an inexpensive way to keep it protected. I have not tried it yet, but I will certainly be trying that.

It's been around awhile. Updated review? Also, a lot of reviews state smokeless claim is bogus? If not, what are they doing wrong? Thanks.
I've had one for a couple of years, I've used it for half a dozen car trips. Still holds up. Not a great source for charging. It will also burn through the wood very fast. Like their cook system it is seriously efficient when it burns that hot.
Why didn’t you mention how the pack on the side charges your electronic devices? That’s a huge selling point with biolite products.
We are new RV owners and I am debating between the solo fire pit and this Biolite as a Christmas gift for my Hubby. Our RV has burners and an outside griddle so we don't' "need" the grill but that is our favorite mode of cooking. Which one do you like most? How are they holding up?

Currently 25% off at REI and BioLite directly, quite tempted. Enjoyed the ambiance of the Solo, but not getting the heat benefits was a bummer. How much of a pain is it to kill the fire if you're ready for bed but there's still fuel in it?

Can it charge your small electric devices like the small pot? I used to like that pot but I sold it. At three pounds it was too much dead weight.
Comon Man! Saw one at the store and thought they were neat then found out they are like $200 bucks! Lose the battery stuff and just make a plain one for $50. it has mesh sides, should get enough air? Right now I just stick to the grate on the fire...

You've got the first wood burning generator that I've ever seen, and all people wanna talk about is they can cook a hot dog on it.
This Fire pit does not have the energy generator like the original Biolite stove has.

We really like your videos. Very informative. My wife ask me a question about which BioLite product charges quickest, or produces the most electricity? Is it the Camp Stove 2, BioLite BaseCamp, or BioLite FirePit? Many thanks, Harold
It wouldn't be the fire pit since it doesn't actually charge like the small stoves.
Any thoughts on how much soot and debris shoot out on the sides? I’m looking to use this in a backyard that’s covered with chips/mulch which I would not to get all blackened up, something that the Solo Stoves don’t seem to do, though I like the idea of getting more radiant heat.

It appears to be little to no smoke? That is my biggest concern.
That's the point. It is designed to burn super efficient and not sit and smolder underneath creating a bunch of smoke. That's what the air movement through the pipes is meant to do. Feed the fire lots of oxygen and produce little to no smoke.

I dont get why you would want a highly flammable lithium battery hanging off the side of a firepit, plus when you use it, you have a better chance of melting your devices

Chuck Klosterman typically leave the pit to cool overnight and then you can empty the ashes into a garbage bag and carry them out.

So the folkys music, clap machine gets us in the mood for fun firepit. At the 2:03 mark he said: "Let's do it." Next screen is a fire. How did he light those logs? How did he start the fire? And BTW, why is it only men are videoed doing camping 'things' like this?
At the 5:23 mark he goes on about the fan. How did he start the fan? I like the stone one behind him. I can play with stick with that. Not sure I'd be allowed to play with this metal gizmo, me being female.
What does the metal look like after a few uses and how do we dump the grease out? It certainly isn't biodegradable like the stone pit behind you. I think I'm out.

I would certainly say that BioLite is quite innovative but definitely a car camping device.

Terrible idea of putting a battery pack next to a fire.
The constant fan noise would be a distraction from “nature” IMHO.
It’s not even noticeable on the lower settings. If you really crank it up it’s got some noise, but it’s not that big of a deal.

I ordered a solo stove, this looks like a gimmick to me, dirtier, grease from cooking. Solo! Simple.

Definitely not the dumbest thing when you really break down the purpose. Of course natural fires happen, which isn’t even relevant in areas where natural fires aren’t part of the cycle. Open your mind a little to better leave no trace application.
