Chainsaw Cutting Crooked? Here's How I Fixed Mine

- I bought a Chicago Electric Chainsaw Sharpener from Harbor Freight to see if that would cure my chainsaw cutting crooked. Note: the chainsaw doesn't simply cut crooked but actually creates a curved cut like I cut it with a jigsaw. As I always hand sharpen the chain with a file I suspected that my technique from left the left side to the right side of the chain was inconsistent and thus every time I sharpened it the cut of the chains saw got worse. Therefore, a chainsaw sharpening machine will return a consistent tooth profile on both sides. After which if the saw returns to cutting straight I'll know my hand sharpening technique is the cause of the crooked/curved cuts.
1.Get a stihl chain saw sharpener. 2. Make sure your using the right sized file.
Always use the 30 % angle and that all your teeth are approx the same size. You have a little line on each tooth that indicates the angle you should be using, try to keep to this angle on both sides.
The sharpener should help you lots, but it is simply getting used to what to look for and keeping the right angle.
I sucked at first, so much so I had to get my chain professionally sharpened.
Should have just bought a new chain but the advice I got from the guy was priceless, and he didn't ridicul me, just smiled knowingly. 😊
Glad to see you were avle to straighten out your cut. One other thing, check the bar for uneven wear. But i second one of the comments about checking out Billy Ray Smith...Buckin Billy Ray....he goes over all the aspects of sharpening and he has a wonderful personality to boot.

The reason it cuts crooked is because when you sharpen your chain you’re doing it unevenly. I think everybody does it when they start with chainsaws but when you file from the left then switch around and file from the right you just tend to do one side harder than the other so as you’re cutting it’s ripping one side out faster than the other because the teeth are getting more wood. You just practice sharpening or what you can do is just buy a few chance and then take them into a professional. Sthil also makes a thing that looks like it’s a toy but it’s got multiple files in there and it works pretty well it helps you get the angle nice and even and they’re also depth control pieces in a chain and it gets those at the same time. I still struggle with it, I don’t use the chainsaw a ton but more than most probably. You’ve just got to be real consistent and make sure you get both sides evenly, when you’re doing it by hand you just have to constantly be thinking and make sure you hit every single tooth the same. There are guides you can buy to keep your angles correct but I think it’s just a thing that takes practice, the guys who do logging and have been doing this for years just grab a file and hit it and they’re just used to it but it’s something I’ve always struggled with. I still think the easiest method is just to wait till you’ve got about five or six chains and then take them all Lynn and pay somebody two or three bucks each to do it for you. 😂😂
I think with what you got going is your chain is too loose . It can be every thing you said but it look loose when you pulled in it plus don’t forget too set your rakers. It’s a tricky thing too get good at trial and error
The chain does get slack pretty quick. I'll keep a closer eye on it and see if the looseness corresponds to the crooked cut. Thanks for the tip!
Chain adjustment, and chain sharpening. With a new bar and chain it should not cut crooked unless your chain tension is wrong, causing it to lean. Check online or the manual for proper adjustment of chain tension. I think tension my be your problem if you have a new bar and chain. Also proper bar and chain oil.
