One week ago I cut off my dreadlocks and shaved my head to a buzzcut. I was hoping to keep my dreadlocks for many years to come but ultimately I was unable to keep them. In this video I share the story of the problems I was having with my dreadlocks and why I had to shave them.

At the end of 2018, my husband and I quit our jobs, sold our yoga studio and 90% of our possessions and moved into our 1969 VW bus. We spent 18 months traveling the globe exploring, rock climbing, adventuring and eating delicious vegan food along the way. We recently settled in Joshua Tree, CA with our pup Gypsy, and have been adjusting to a minimalist life in a house.

You’ve proven that your relationship is good with your hair. Your dreads were not thriving so you shaved them off. It’s hair - it’ll grow back. If you want to bleach your hair - do it! Hair is to have fun with. I’ve shaved my head, had it long, short, colored it, went natural (grey/gray) for 5 years. I’ve worn wigs, corn rows, extensions. Try it all / it’s fun! Your blessed to have hair - long, short, thick, or thin! You look beautiful with or without hair! ❤️💪🏼💃🏻💪🏼❤️

Hi Rebecca. Not to minimise your concerns, but i laughed when you said that you've never been that happy with your hair. I have very thick, wavy hair which is difficult to manage, and i've always longed for straight, fine hair. I do think its a case where most of us think the grass is greener on the other side of the fence. I loved your dreads but you still look gorgeous and healthy. Keep well..

You inspired me to break free from dying, heat styling, & going platinum again due to using boxed hair dye during covid19. :( The brown turned black. Ack! So I shaved it all off last night. No going back. haha Just trying to love my gray hair now. I will see what happens. If I don't like the grey, I have a wig for stand by....
It's like you said and just trying to love myself through this phase by being kind to myself. No more dye is a huge step in the right direction. Feels very freeing and I smiled all the way thru the transition. I like the fact when I washed my face this morning, I washed my scalp too-done in a nanosecond. Was awesome to get back all that time in the morning.

You are beautiful no matter what. I keep a picture of myself from years ago when I got my hair cut just above my shoulders. I always had long thick hair. The hair stylist made my hair look shiny and flat, that was good. After my first wash though, my hair ended up looking like a pyramid., and too short to put into a ponytail. Glad my hair grows fast. I will not make that mistake again.

  • @annikcayouette-brousseau2826

You look lovely. Your beauty shines from within. We are subjected to a lot of judgment for our hair, as women. So much programming that spurs us to do bizarre things to our heads to "look good" -- look good for who?? I hear a lot of societal pressure coming through when you speak about your hair being difficult. Please embrace your own hair as just another one of your features, just there, not right or wrong, and do whatever you please with it. Maybe for now you can just enjoy and embrace the simplicity of this look. You have a really hot summer coming your way!

  • @glennclarke4239
    @glennclarke4239 Před 4 lety +2

Rebecca, I just watched this vid about why you shaved your hair and in theory I agree with all you said. That being said, there is a thing called tensile strength, that is the amount of stress your hair can handle when called upon to do things that put it under a certain amount of stress ( like putting it in dreads ). Unfortunately your hair was telling you enough is enough. Equally you do not ( from performance evidence ) have hair that is thick enough ( it is very fragile ) and it breaks very easily I would imagine with all stress inducers ie. color, bleach, hi-lites, and perms. It is better to know this and to put the difference in your hair to style.
Best of luck in the future and many blessings.

I know the fine hair feeling oh too well ! At least you have coverage on your temples !! lol I'm receding !! Thank goodness for those sprays you can get now! I totally lost all my hair from half way down my head, I used to use glue in hair extensions and noticed i was getting the odd bald bit so switched to clip ins, but for some reason my hair continued to fall out ...devastating as my hair was waist length and I was early 40's so not that old really.I had a head as smooth as a babies bum from around ear level down! Turns out it was stress FFS BUT it grew back thicker than it was but ya know nothing like the glorious locks I would have liked,so I invested in a few clip in pieces.Took a good 7 years to grow, I don't grow hair well either :( and now I'm losing it again, this time all over in brush fulls, to where I don't want to brush my hair each day.Anyway so sorry for rambling I was just empathising with you about the fine hair and I hope you get to love your hair more as it grows, I for one think you look stunningly beautiful & no I'm not just saying that, I would have just not said anything if I thought you looked terrible. You are adorable with the shaved head. I had dreadlock in 2012. They were only in for a few months. When I cut them out, I then shaved my head (I do shave mine pretty often, like every 3-4 years) and then I donate my hair (didn't donate the dreads). Then when my hair started coming in that time, IT WAS REALLY CURLY!!!! And often times, after shaving your head, your hair will come in thicker! So you may have done something very beneficial for your hair. And then when your hair comes back in (hopefully thicker) then you can have your dreads installed again.

I‘m having this kind of hair too, not as blond anymore, but a ton of very thin hair. For the past ca. 30 years I used a perm , that looked astonishingly natural, even hairdressers thought it is natural. With this I could have long hair without it looking greasy already in the evening after washing them in the morning. And I never lost a scrunchy anymore 😅, it was very convenient. But after trying alternatives for washing them, especially shampoo bars, I had to decide to either go back to my usual hair care products with all the plastic coming with it or to let the perm grow out and try the shampoo bar with my original hair. And it works quite nice! Maybe you will find the perfect shampoo bar for yourself to be at peace with your hair structure in the future. Good luck!!!🍀

I commented on your last video about clipping my hair in 2012 and never growing it back, and am now too spoiled to ever have to spend a lot of time fixing it. Ironically, I have a full head of fine hair too! If you let it grow, it will not stick out because it is fine. It will grow faster than you think if you do not focus on it. But again, I say, enjoy it while it is short, wash and wear, low maintenance. You may find you like it more than you thought you would. I know I did! Hugs to you! XOXOX

This speaks to my soul🙏🏻 I have exactly the same hair type as you - colour, texture, everything. We have Peter Pan hair - hair that never grew up🧚🏻‍♀️Always wanted dreads but it’s so fine it just wouldn’t work- I’d have about 6 on my entire head. Yours were beautiful & I’m so happy for you that you got to have them. Like you , have always wanted it to be something it never can be ... longer, thicker, curlier. Even brushing will break my hair. It goes from strawberry blonde to white blonde in the sun, saltwater... or with some bleach in the absence of summer! After months of sun & saltwater when travelling, so much had broken that I had to chop it to just above shoulder length - currently trying to resist bleaching some strands to compensate for lack of sun in quarantine. Finding this has inspired me to try & embrace my hair for what it is, not what I want it to be... will be following along with you on your hair journey! You look beautiful, btw🦋💜

@circe&calypso I used ti have hair mich like yours as a child and it changed early because I changed my diet and I started using a subliminal and making affirmantions to totally change it.I've got thick coarse strands with a lot of density and it's gotten quite dark and is growing fast though it's becoming very straight when it used to tend to be curly.I also changed my diet and started eating alot of animal foods.
@Rebecca Sission -I would advise starting with eating things like eggs, dairy foods, fish and meat if you want to though the eggs and dairy are more essential if you want to thicken that hair and also get tested for low iron levels which can cause issues like yours with hair.Mine is very coarse and high density and it grows very fast so a cut like yours is almost impossible for me because it would just grow out way too fast.My hair used to be a lot like yours mostly as a child and you can also search out desired hair subliminals to help with changing your hair type from very fine to coarse like I did and mine's also starting to turn jet black which is exactly what I always wanted for my natural hair color.I made affirmantions to change my hair's natural color to black because I'd rather do it that way and would advise you to find a subliminal for changing the color naturally if you want to change that as well.

The absolute same thing happened to me 4 years ago. So i had 120 dreads for 4 years. Last length was the middle lower back. I have strong and thick hair, but the thing is that I also loved to style my dreads and I think that that I is the reason for my dreads falling out. After 4 years the roots were so thin that I had to comb out. My hair was ok after and I thought that I would newer have dreads again. 10 mounts later I have middle back 20 dreads on the end of my neck, and the rest is normal. I couldn't be without them, so newer say newer ;) P.S. you are rocking the new look! Enjoy the new journey

Girl I feel you 100%!! This is exactly how my hair is too, and I hate it! Especially since I love to bleach/color my hair. And the hair shaft is soo sooo thin, it's just breaking at all lengths from the root to the ends. But my hair is actually healthy, I've asked so many hair dressers and they all agree it's not from damage. So now I know I can never dread it
:( I'm now trying a course of Nioxin to see if that will improve the thickness of my strands. Fingers crossed it helps!

I have hair SO similar to yours, and I have had long dreadlocks for about 20 years now. I first got them because I loved the look of them but also because I was so sick of my hair having no real 'body' and feeling kind of limp. Like you, I finally felt relief and so much more like myself as soon as I got them!! 20 years later and I still love them. However, mine have fly-away hairs everywhere now as it's so fine, and I just haven't kept up with maintenance as I find it quite painful afterwards. And like you, the sides are my thinest part. For now, I am considering shortening my dreads (as I have chronic illness which includes a lot of neck & shoulder pain...so long dreadlocks are probably not helping with the pain due to their weight), and also I am considering shaving the sides of my dreads...to make a kind of dreadhawk I guess. I am still very nervous about this idea!...lol, but thought it could be a way to have a bit of a change and also get rid of more weight from my dreads. But I don't want it to look too harsh on me.
Anyway, I am still thinking of possible solutions to mix things up a bit, get rid of some weight, yet keep my dreads for now. Any ideas welcome :)
You do look great with a shaved head :) I'm not sure I could pull that off myself, but it does look nice on you.

Your dreads were lovely but this cut looks REALLY good on you, it suits you and I think I like it better than the dreads. I too have super fine hair which is a nightmare to do anything with, so I usually just have a bob or a pixie cut, but I tried dreads, it only lasted a few months because my scalp got so irritated and itchy I was scratching in my sleep until it bled so I brushed them out (they were new enough to do that too). I feel your fine hair pains.

My hair never went through puberty either. It's so fine and every "volumizing" product I tried seemed to have the opposite effect. Fast forward to age 40, when I entered early menopause and my hair started falling out! I was devastated and basically stopped doing anything to it...no blow drying, no products, no brushing. It improved so much! Now I just use the Ethique No Frizz shampoo bar, maybe spray some ACV on it after, and scrunch it a little before letting it air-dry overnight. And I only use spin-pins...no rubber bands (unless it's in a braid). It'll never be the hair of my dreams but it could definitely be worse.
PS- I love love love your videos! You are beyond adorable.

I have really big, fuzzy, unruly hair and I decided a few months ago to give myself an undercut for the first time ever just to try and help it lay better and also just to have some fun. I discovered that I have a rather large birthmark on the back of my head 😂 I’m growing it out now and it grew so fast, already about an inch and a half. When I put the rest of my hair up the short section tends to stick out in all different directions and has earned the affectionate name of my “funk” from my hubby 😂 I’ve always struggled with the texture and colour of my hair. I am much better at looking after it now and have more respect for it than when I was younger, but I’m only in my 20’s and still learning. Good luck with your grow out, you look gorgeous hair or no hair xo
