I remember when I was about 19 years old, Lupe Fiasco had came to the local college for a conference and I went to listen to him speak. Afterwards, I chased him and his team down outside before they hopped into their Sprinter van and handed him a beat tape that I had made. In hindsight, those beats were so shitty lol. But you know what? He took the CD from me and actually listened to them. It meant a lot to me. Good people!
As you should. You're the embodiment of The Cool. Nice work man. Still got dat heat?
Back when you could actually hand someone a CD lol! Dope story tho. Do you still make beats?
B b ;. ;
he came to my school when i was sophmore in high school to perform around the time lasers came out. i was rapping at the time, so when he held a q&a after, i asked to rap for him. the radio station host who sponsored the event was holding the mic and shoved me off. long story short, he told me to come back, let me rap for him, challenged that if i could make him and his dj head bob, he would donate 15k to my school. i won the challenge, and ended up getting $1000 scholarship from it when i graduated. bro is def good people, it meant everything to me at the time and really boosted my confidence. shouts to lupe fr
Man seeing Lupe with grey hair is wild! He is still in his 20s in my head.
Professor Ozzy Word
He's Top 30 in age if I'm not mistaken.
Lol..20's no more
Stress
Yea buddy, Lupe should be 39 now.
Joe says ... "I felt like I had hits"
Lupe like ..." imagine this my songs were already platinum in another country"
đ đ đđ
Lol big boy moves. Lupe's fall from the label's graces hurt a lot more than Joe and his plethora of no hits
@@ReezyDoesIt yuuuup
Lupeâs intellect is uncommon among artists. Once you talk ownership and percentages you become a threat. Crazy how Lior dictates which artist comes out and who doesnât. How can someone outside from outside our culture dictate our culture?? Crazy !
How do artist enroll to Lupe " I.T " UNION??
are you serious? because its a business and he was doing it at a time before an artist could create demand with the internet. The label is literally putting all their money onto an artist and they set roll outs for the year to try to set the artist up the best they think they can. (i.e. what time of year they sell the best, who they release against, ARTIST DEVELOPMENT which people complain is gone but at the same time say fuck labels). They don't want to loose money. And its not just "your" culture its every genre in the music business until the internet came along. OF COURSE you should do it yourself and build a following, but some people dont have the foresight or have a chip on their shoulder
Easy. Money, you are not in the game as an artist you are part of it.
Dame Dash is the real goat, they said he was crazy when he called all these people out years ago
Same apoologised to these same people
grahamjl766 your right Dame has right message but not the right messenger
@ doesn't make it right, Dame isn't a villian but he talks to everyone like he's trying to make them feel little
he was right, but he wasnât the right person to tell us
Dame didn't break any news with this, everybody knows the music industry is full of snakes, if Dame was smart he would have known how to navigate without burning all of his relationships and basically xing himself out of the business. He would have still been in it to continue to fight for the artist.
I remember watching him headline a show at University of Florida and guess who his opening act was... Drake!! My how times changed
Lupe bodied Joe in his own bag.
FACTS!! Joe though he was doing his "I'm the smartest person in the room" act and got shut down LOL!! "
Yo Joe sound crazy tryna compare his career to Lupe. No disrespect but Joe never had a classic mainstream album. Lupe coming off 2 classic albums and having to fight for his 3rd is way different then Joe flopping and the label putting him on the back burner
I dunno how much you followed Joe's career but he went through some industry shit which is why people know him only for Pump it Up, but he was consistently dropping fire mixtapes for the over a decade. He has the right to say he was fucked around by his label..although that debut album was trash so I dunno if I can blame them.
@Daniel Hill You're right to be fair. I was mainly trying say that Joe had been though industry bs as well. And lets not forget that as much of a joke as it is, he made one of the biggest hip hop songs of all time and that shouldve counted for something. He also said the support stop coming BEFORE he dropped the album which is why it flopped not after.
Listen to the song Def Jam diss he explains it better than I can.
@Daniel Hill it was a smash and was a smash for ages. I dont mnean big as vbin hip hop loved it I mean big as it went mainstream and stayed there for months if not years. Look up its stats if you dont believe me
@Daniel Hill To be honest a lot of what i see is because im a big joe fan an he shouldve easily been a top tier artist.if he was on a proper label i feel he wouldve been but he also had his chanc and then wanted to stay on independent labels or sell direct to his fans via the internet.
@@cnsmooth it was also a sample or remake or influenced by another track in the early 90s ... I think they played it in the movie Juice. At the end of the day jb ain't fukn wit Lf. .. Lupe can rip anyone... imo... it literally takes 3,4 times or even more to catch the meaning of a few Lf bars or track
Drogas Wave album deserves a Grammy đ„đ„đ„đ„đ„ Lupe is definitely on another tier from other rappers
DrewTube1212 SkyWalker that album is đ„đ„đ„đ„đ„
Lupe Fiasco has always been my go to example on this topic. His dealings with Atlanta to release his third album. Staging fan protests outside Atlantic to have them release the music. I'm very well aware of Lupe's Situation and have since been one to say. "Atlantic makes slave's"
Lupe is what Neely Fuller Jr would be, if he was a rapper/emcee.
Lupe is highly under appreciated, when you look at the bigger picture- same with Mos Def..
My first rap concert was Lupe fiasco's "The Cool'' tour. The tickets were 15 dollars and at the time the most popular record store in this small town was shut down (FYE): store name.(before streaming). Needless to stay he rocked the stage at the University of Mary Washington. Without fully getting a fair shake at sales. He gave me the most unforgettable performance ever. No chains, no diamonds, just a mic, a jacket, heart, and soul. It was like he was at the garden (MSG). Madison Square Garden for those who don't' know. That made me decide to leave the streets and pursue entertainment in many aspects. behind and in front of the entertainment business. I just want to say thank you. if he reads this that would be super dope.
IDOT ROK I follow that heâs the best mc Iâve seen in concert at uconn it was epic thereâs a video somewhere of like 1 min of it online heâs a đ anybody whoâs about Real hip hop knows this.
Weird grammar but okay.
Best performer
I think FYE was a very common popular store. Thatâs where I bought the college dropout.
39:50 Joe admitting that Lupe is intellectually superior
Joe too industry see how quickly he changed the convo when he started talking about Lior
Lyor
Lupe is a GOAT
Pac had the outlaws reading books too, love what you doing lupe
Ppl forget how Lupe was really and still is đ„đ„đ„đ„đ„
Nooo dont invite Budden to the meeting. He a spy
CHRIS- G I felt that too.
Joe does what Jason Whitlock does when athletes air their grievances about NBA & NFL. "how can you have a problem when they paid you?"
Joe is so industry.
Surface yeah
#1 on that industry list
Fucking joe budden is industry?
Rory has a Big Pun doc coming out....
@@seanturner3447 Rory doesn't pretend to be anti-industry unlike Joe
To be honest i rather hear lupe rap over that pump it up beat
Lupe is LITERALLY one of the BEST to ever enter the game. Basically Lupe
is thinking how Tyler Perry is. WE HAVE TO OWN THE TABLE....to claim a
chair. Joe seems.....like opposition on this concept. He seems
comfortable having a chair...aka 40 acres.....but they'll still tax you
on the LAND...and can seize it at anytime.
Joe isn't smart enough to put a table together lol. Lupe going beyond Joe capabilities in the conversation. Tyler Perry is a one in a million guy with the moves he made. Not that many movie production studios in general, white or otherwise in the USA.
Lupe is one of the greatest to ever emcee, but Daigo CLEARLY went extra, extra, extra EXTRA soft on him during their Street Fighter 5 match.
Facts!
So lol
Super facts
He know that that's why he got that smirk on his face
Imagine hearing Food & Liquor 1 as a demo đ€Żđ€Żđ€Żđ€Żđ€Żđ€Żđ€Ż
Marlo Dadon its out there
This was the conversation that was needed. Mad I missed it live. Glad you posted, thanks.
Joe is simply saying "I hear you, but that's how this business works, which is why I got out."
That masters in a suitcase shit is hilarious and sad at the same time.
For Joe to use "This is the Record Business" saddens me.. He plays both sides and that dangerous.. Hopefully he becomes more consistent in his actions..
Mannnn đđđđFolks say Joe is a genius tho. He really knows how to get things outta folks. Shiiiid...He tap danced all over the Atlantic convo and Lyor stuff. Talk about Social Distancing at itâs finest. Sheeeeesh!
Paul Taylor he kinda works at Atlantic thatâs why he canât really just shit on them
Paul Taylor thatâs because he is cool with 2/4 people lupe mentioned. One of which he has called many times while on his podcast and as lupe mentioned another he has done a sent down with.
Plus he is cool with quite a few people in high places in Atlantic.
However joe I think says some of those things, because he now sees it from their perspective though he doesnât fully agree , and isnât on their side he knows what they are doing is whatâs in the best interest of them and their business.
Mr. G Joe is in bed with these folks and his opinion is slanted. Go watch the podcast where he defended Puff til the ends of the earth against Rory and Mal. Itâs obvious He will not speak ill of those folks who he wouldâve been at they throats with their treatment of Artists. Now his tone is completely changed since heâs âRetired â. I enjoy the podcast cause I know Joe talks shit about stuff. Industry talk turns into His friends and his relationship with them and how someway they are just good guys to him. Lupe told him stories of the fuckery and joe just laughed it off. Mannnn Cmon. Lol
Using context cues he's clearly being Devil's Advocate. Yes its completely fucked up to do but Joe is saying "BUT OF COURSE THEY WOULD DO THAT" because capitalism. Why wouldn't the big record label not see a rising star and try to milk as much money out of them as possible? Even Lupe acknowledges how genius the snake shit was but both of them do ultimately say it is snake shit.
Lupe Fiasco sounds like a very smart man . what they did to him break's my heart.
The second Joe hears the level of work it takes to make it to the meeting he says skip all that and just invite him. If Joe doesn't read or get a feel for the material why would they invite him to the meeting? Joe's lack of interest in the the technical attributes of musical science worries me and really drives home the point that not everyone could be in the group. Lupe said you cant just let everyone join, well Joe Budden is looking like a part of everyone.
Lol he had no idea that Sosa was even a thing and then found out that he had to read big books and study and take tests and play rap chess in order to even participate. Itâs a big commitment and Iâm sure that everyone who is apart of Sosa thought long and hard about their decision to join not in a split second.
I've been waiting for this to be uploaded. Thanks!
Lu probly is the best rapper of all time I agree cuz when I hear folks speak about Eminem I be like please lol
I'd go out on a limb and say Lupe is technically a better rapper than Em
@@kaliefhampton2483 you're going too far. On a lyrical spectrum yes but strictly technical in Audio and patterns then no.
@@radarinfinite1032 I like Em as a career artist more than Lupe, he has much more appeal its undeniable. Lupe's rap has more depth than Em, he weaves in and out of topics/idea more smoothly and attacks better concepts. Conceptually, Em has been lacking for about a decade or more
@@kaliefhampton2483 I get you. I was speaking on just the technical side, specifically the sound, rhyming. Imo Em is technically better and lupe is lyrically better. They are both in my top 5. I think Em has progressed technically and regressed with everything else except story telling
Long story short,Lupe got tired of doing the satanic rituals. So they cut him off.
Emmanuel Ayeni basically and Joe got packed up trying to be on that bullshit and got served. Then try to be on that memory loss bull shit lol he canât use word semantics and devils advocate on intelligent people. Save him from self slipping in that baphomet.
I really wish Joe stop this mess. He has to stop doing this when it comes to the industry topics. Just stop commenting on it. Itâs obvious Joe has got paid and his whole view on the creator is different. Thatâs his choice but stop trying to call folks bitter now that heâs got in the Good graces of them âfolksâ.
Right!? I became more of a fan of Joe when he was more for the artists/creators and it seems like for the past 6 months or more his view took a turn and I never figured out why?
Bryan Torres Shiiiiid....Itâs obvious. đ°đ°đ°đ°
@@BThatDope I think it might just be a better understanding of business. Hes working out deals, putting people in positions, and doing the ideas / overheard parts (to a degree) and understands why the people working with / for him dont get an equal portion.
I donât see it that way, he still hates the business of rap...but heâs also a realist.
Paul Taylor itâs because heâs pushing trying to push a great agenda - ownership and understanding business. But remember things like that have to be done discreetly. Lupe should know whats going on by now and realise itâs not worth talking about. He should be doing his ting!
Lupe is a top 10 lyricist all time..
Itâs probably only ten people in his lane frfr
Easily
Dame Dash been saying this
Joe was mad at the industry cuz he didn't get the fame and money he wanted now he got it he a advocate for them.
Ashan Grant no he doesnât. He constantly bashes the industry. The difference is,.... lupe still bashing and joe grinded his way from radio station to leaving complex, to his own podcast to revolt with puff and the pull up series and sotc

@Osana I also got besides Joe being "Industry" .....Most heads at these record labels are a piece of shđ©t.....Lyor, Kallman, and Steve Stoute is Infamous for being one of the worst Humans in the Entertainment Industry!
Osana AD exactly Joe is still exposing the industry
Know the music business. And not to sign to no label if u r a artist. Bcuz they are some real dirty mfs.
They stick to words that define their restricted point of view.
Joe knows the business and niggas don't wanna hear about the dirt underbelly
Its amazing how quickly people stop listening to you when you just giving the other side of an argument
Salute nytro on da intro... dope recap... we need a Lupe vs wale joint
This would be a great pull up...
Lupe def got black balled. He dropped them big names....đ
this is one of the most insightful and funny interviews I've ever seen !
Lupe would be the kind of artist that Tupac (an artist that a lot of people hold in high regard for his revolutionary stance on many things) would salute. Lupe ain't gonna stop until he sees change occur. Joe saying he still bitter, but Lupe is fighting for all of us, against a force that has monopoly over the whole game. Lupe needs our support đŻ
This was a dope convo, two great minds
He would have been a good fit on state of the culture
Better than fucking jixi canât stand him

I like jinx but Lupe be amazing on that
Kampala Twich Tooo much flava, he and Joe would argue all the time
"We play battle rap with a chess clock " that's đ shitđ„đ„đ„
When Lupe said they(record company) flew to purchase the original record Kick Push was sampled from? Bruhhhhh, thatâs some evil genius pimpn type of shit.. that lets you know, how ever hard youâre working for your money? Somebody is working twice as hard to take it.
This was much needed!!
At the end of the video, I imagined Spike Lee and the movie "School Daze" with Laurence Fishburne yelling "WAKE UP!!" What has adjusted our attitude? Don't, be blind, Take it back đž
So accurate
I wonder what made Joe flip...All I remember is him killing the industry forever and nows its a flip. Respect the mans legend, sometimes I feel like this game will get you and shift the moral compass. I know he trying get artists to open up, but damn especially when they railroaded his music career.
This conversation is so educational and intense in a good way
Joe is the epitome of bitter. That Mandala behind his is dope. Lupe is too smart to talk to Joe. That is all.
Lupe needs to just do a J Cole and do lots features with other artists to show his versatility and then focus on putting out what he wants. That way he will draw new fans aswel as not sell out.
Clippa caddy J Cole has had several platinum selling albums which has put him on a God like status even amongst the youth. Any rapper would immediately feature him on a song. Iâm not sure these new druggie rapper kids even know who Lupe is. They obviously wouldnât be as open to collaborating.
@@LegendaryVibes101 I'd love 2 hear lupe with a new artist but i hope he try's 2 make a good song instead of trying 2 be lyrical
that time has passed Lupe, he had that shot after the Cool. but his path is his path, heâs not going to be pulling any hot names to get in any track due to his current relevancy and i doubt heâd want to do anything like that
The dumbest comment I ever saw in the history of youtube.
As a upcoming artist from Chicago this very informative Thanks Luoe for dropping Knowledge
30:00 when Joe says we gotta get out of this oppressed state he makes a fallacy in his retorts. If you could just get out of that mindset, it wouldn't be oppressive.
@Katarina Love Yea I see how stupid I type. It wouldn't stop oppression but oppression is multifaceted and if the societal norms leads a population to think a distinct and submissive way then the mindset is oppressive because it puts one category of people over another. Society also perpetuates the idea. It ties into real research of sociology. Also Native Americans were oppressed in their mindset as well which did eliminate much of their culture. These things happened and it does no justice to any community to act as if it would be different IF something else were to have happened. In tactics of war propaganda and control over information and making a narrative that even your opponents abide to are very useful tools. This reigns true especially when population dynamics are one sided. I.e. Caucasian people make up 65% of the US. If they put a norm into society that places whites on a higher level than minorities and propagate that mindset into society, 65% will rally that idea in society and create a sociological narrative that places others on the backburned. There are many factors to oppression and oppressive mindsets are so powerful they continue for generations. This is a fact we see in African Americans, Native Americans, and Hispanic Americans. We even see that mindsets trickle down in the dominant communities. Caucasian tend to feel at they are at a higher position in this country based on the ancestors and their lineage. I.e. Trumps, Clinton's, Kennedy's, Roosevelt's, Rockefellers, Carnegies, Morgans, and the list continues. I may sound stupid but oppressive mindsets are a real topic of study in universities just by another name and there is research done to prove how sociological helps the subjugation of other peoples in a country. Please don't take my word for it. Join a class and explore you would be surprised to see how difficult it is to unlearn societal norms.
Yo I hate when ninjas attack my short term memory đđŻ

SOSA is a union and rap school? What is SOSA? Lupe never made it crystal clear. Sometimes you have to spell it out. Break it down for the slow ones like myself. You have to make people truly understand the importance of the group and how it benefits them. As an educator, I am constantly explaining why the subject matter I teach is beneficial to the lives of my kids. I know teenagers who can't comprehend the purpose of an education period. Also, what was it exactly that Lupe wanted us to "SEE"?
We need a Lupe Biopic!
Dope convo. Lupe and Joey are both in my top 10 rappers ever. Underrated rap legends.
Joe tryna do (what I call) the "pain Olympics"...... Trying to convince Lupe that his career was worse and that Lupe shouldn't be mad, trying to justify every move Atlantic made.

So joe is industry for preaching ownership? Yâall sound crazy
dre edwards what lupe is saying is that itâs virtually impossible to do it on that level due to the powers that be that are already in place. Going indie is wayyyy harder than people think.
dre edwards if it was that easy. Joe would just start HIS own label and do it himself too. These labels are too far in the game. Theyâre not going anywhere and are eating off back catalogs til the world ends. We can either help change whoâs at the label, or join the labels as is, or retire.
@@rrorocket566 very true and not all great artists are great businessmen

Man Lupe sonned Joe. Joe is an emotional based type character, that's why as soon as you talk books and reading he ran. Add bitter too, how he saying just because Lupe had some success he can't complain about being mistreated? Claiming Lupe is misinformed like he always like to say about people, but on the low its still about him being better and how he was the one who had it the worst?(trying to play the victim card) An as soon as he thought he had an argument, he quickly goes on a weak rant(like he does with everyone on his pod, note how Lupe told him straight up he talks alot) whilst Lupe from start till the end kept the same energy and showed towards the end that he is miles ahead of his conceptualization of what the real fight and how to go about it is. Worst off dude already refused to join Lupe and I bet it's because at the time he never found a way to understand it being about him like he always does(notice how he tried to compare the whole thing to the government). Joe lacks the type of maturity Lupe has to say I can still make music, or not fire my attacks at everyone as if they all sit at the same table as soon as you run into problems with a few.
You need to come knowledged up if you engaging with a nigga like Lupe. Theories and hypothesis don't always suffice in these kind of engagements. Bring 100% facts to the table not theories!
I love seeing fans of joe commenting on this because everyone of his fans seems to be mature to a degree. Joe should be called out on looking dumb in this. ITS OK to validate and support the bullshit that happens to people like LUPE. It shows joe is becoming more industry by the day.
Joe likes winning the struggle Olympics
