    There are three major forms of lead-acid batteries used in cars which will be discussed in this video: Flooded Lead Acid, Spiral Cell Absorbed Glass Mat (AGM), and Flat Plate AGM.
    Flooded lead acid batteries are the most common lead-acid battery found in OEM applications. They offer a cost-effective solution, however they can require more maintenance, and must be mounted upright to avoid spills.
    Spiral Cell & Flat Plate Absorbed Glass Mat (AGM) batteries offer unique advantages over traditional flooded lead acid style batteries. They are maintenance free, and because they use 99.99% pure lead, they offer better cold cranking amps and deep cycling characteristics. They are also more flexible for mounting, as the absorbed glass mat medium prevents acid from spilling.

    The jump cuts and low dolly shots of the side of a table are really antithetical to your style. I think whoever directed this bit doesn't understand your drawings or why we'd want to see them for more than .3 of a second. I feel like the editing pushed this from a "sponsored-yet-still-full-of-information" video over to the advertisement side of things.

      I discovered that my Chevrolet spark EV uses a 12v AGM battery. Searching the internet for more information, I found a lot of confused, contradictive, speculative, unreliable information. Will the traction batteries charge the 12v battery when the car is parked and not plugged into a charger? Can you substitute an AGM with a flooded battery without harming the electronics? Can you put a battery charger on the 12v battery in an EV just as you would in an ICE car?

    IF Optima felt confident in their claim of "Can last 3x longer than regular batteries" then why are their battery warranties no different than the cheaper flooded acid batteries? For the price on one optima, you can buy nearly 3 ordinary flooded batteries. I'll take my $80 flooded and you can have the $240 Optimas from Mexico.

      @@nthgth i am not talking about beating it with a hammer i'm talking about all the people who would run with a bad alternator over charging under charging killing it constantly. we are talking electricity and charge cycles there is lots of ways you can kill a cell or weaken them by "abuse" that won't leave any tell tale signs that would just look like a manf. defect and they have to protect themselves. these batteries are not meant for a everyday driver in a normal car they are meant for higher "abuse" scenarios

      Engineering Explained: I'm ambivalent about this. I mean, I want to like it, it's certainly different, but I also find it too distracting. I wouldn't give up on this idea entirely, but tone it down a bit. Or actually, a lot. :D

    Firstly, I love your channel and videos. Not only I learned a lot but also enjoyable. I have a little note about this video, the cinematography was extremely distracting to the point where I could not follow what was being said. Cinematography treckery should aid the content and not distract from it. I get that sponsors sometimes impose things on you, but I hope you wouldn't let them change the things you do best.. A simple camera set up is definitely the best strategy for educational videos, and let them go nuts when it's time for their product plug.. Finally, have I mentioned that I LOVE your channel? :)

      Multiple cameras are fine, but this had way too many cuts back and forth. Very distracting. Great info though. Seems Optima is trying the same route that Odyssey is doing with the AGM non-spiral design.

      The cinematography thing was so harsh it made me pause the video after 30s just to comment on it.
      First you make a nice graphic, but then the camera points at your face while you explain something on that graphic, and panning over your hands while youre pointing at something is even worse.

      Considering this guy's videos and how he looks at everything from an engineering standpoint rather than brand or hype, when he puts on a company t-shirt makes a video for their product even if he's getting paid it has more credibility than someone else. This is not the type of guy that would accept millions of dollars from a company to push a product he personally did not believe in.

    If this is supposed to be an Explanation then there's no need for the distracting background music, camera angel shouldn't jump through all those weird-angle intercuts and main focus should be either on the person talking or on the whiteboard. As a short lecture on Car Batteries it is too distracting and as a sales promotion it is too boring.
    Jason, you've mastered it and I seriously think you should teach these guys how to make a proper EE video.

I agree that when diving into chemistry it can be a bit hard to follow with short clips. I’ll take everyones thoughts into consideration! For what it’s worth, I thought the editing was great, but perhaps a bit too fast paced for the topics discussed.

    Is this still engineering explained or just an Optima commercial?
    I like your channel and I understand if you mention sponsors that provided equipment, testing facilities etc., but I do not want to see a six minute commercial about something that you could have explained better without Optima.
    What about LiFePo batteries or other AGM designs?
    Why not mention their advantages?

    Fire the director. Moving shots do not belong in an educational video. This isn't a promo selling a whizbang or a cooking show. Excessive cuts are distracting to the ability to absorb this information. I usually love your videos and the content here is great, but the video direction is not appropriate and the editing not conducive to learning.

      Actually, it IS a promo, selling a battery. They aren't even good batteries, they're well marketed batteries. 2 year lifespan on those spiral cells. I know because I sell people XS Power batteries to replace their 2 year old Optima batteries.

      It's mostly midrange and should be mostly not midrange, so as not to overlay his voice so much. It's busy and constantly jarring.

    First off, thank you, I love watching and learning from your video. This video felt a little different than most of your other videos, because it didn't really feel like you gave us a summation at the end with you thoughts and opinions. I think I understand why you did this video the way you did, i.e. Optima kind of sponsored you to to this video, so you can't really say anything negative about their product; that is, if you even had anything negative to say. Anyway, it would have been nice to learn a little more about when you'd want to use the red top vs the yellow top batteries, i.e. truck with a wrench, high powered car stereos, etc. Also, what are the real difference between the yellow top and the blue top batteries? Thanks again for all the videos you post!

      Hey there! Thanks for the feedback. Red-top is more purely for high cranking amps, but good overall. Yellow-top has lower cranking amps, but can be cycled a lot more (great for applications like a truck, winch, RV, etc). Blue top is specifically packaged for marine applications (extra terminals), yellow top is packaged for car applications. Chemically, they are identical (but differ slightly here vs Red Top).

      Difference between yellowtop and bluetop are the terminals. Bluetop has stainless (not 100% sure if steel) terminals, yellowtop has normal terminals.

      Ballistic makes a 4-cell 12v Lithium Iron Phosphate motorcycle battery (EVO2) that weighs less than a pound. I used it in a converted motocross-bike-turned-supermoto and literally strapped the battery inside the airbox it was so tiny! It worked great in that application and cranked a modified 450 4-stroke with ease, although the 8-cell would be a better choice for most street bikes and those are still under 2 pounds.

      Optima were good batteries at one time now they are making them poorly as many have also stated here and on countless car forums .. I went with an Odssey battery and so far so good.

      @@space_114v2 Odyssey is the way to go. Their parent company, EnerSys, acquired Northstar in 2019 so they’re really the best batteries money can buy. I’ve always suggested those two and now they’re made by the same company so even better! Plus they have a 4 year full warranty on all their batteries haha

      optima used to be made in the USA and had stricter quality control standards... they built a new factory south of the border and let their quality control go... they are not the batteries they once were, and I too won't waste the money on them... the company was sold and the new company is making money off of the previous companies good name while running it into the ground. They won't be in business long at this rate.

    As of today, our three cars have all had new batteries in the prior 12 months. It's always a pain when an otherwise reliable car needs a new battery, to say nothing of incidentals (some batteries are tougher to remove than others). I'll probably start using AGMs on cars we expect to have around for a while, instead. Great vid! I've been wondering about the hype, but now it's much more concrete to me.

    The old EverStart Maxx-78S lead acid battery in my truck got me 13 years of dependable use without any maintenance. Amazingly, it could start the truck after sitting months at a time (that was a pretty common occurrence too).

    Good technical information. My first and last Optima died after almost a year, was replaced under warranty and that one also died in about a year. I bought an Advance Auto AGM and it is almost three years old.

    Optima batteries are fantastic, I've got 1 in each of my historic cars. One is getting close to 9yrs old and still cranking strong, the other is in a 4x4 pickup that might see use once a month or two without problems for the last 5yrs. ..both yellow tops.

    Johnson Controls is the manufacturer of most automotive batteries in North America, currently making Optima, most "store brand" batteries, some of Interstate's batteries, and a lot of OEM equipment, too. You really have to go out of your way to not buy one of their products.

      Cars Simplified I think their AGM's are okay. The flooded Johnson batteries can't handle the desert heat. The battery posts eventually cake up in like 2 years. Never seen an AGM do that from them.

    Johnson controls is the oe supplier for mopar/fca products. I work at a Canadian dealership and we see a lot of frozen lead batteries. The glass batteries can loose their charge over long periods in the cold, but rarely "freeze" solid and often can be thawed and charged without much fear that one of the cells ruptured when the battery lost its charge in the cold. If your in cold Canadian weather glass batteries are definitely the way to go! They can be saved wayyyy more often then any battery I've seen

      crkt308 that might be one of the reasons why I’ve never really had a problem with optimal batteries. I’ve used them in the USA Rocky Mountains and I like them so much I’m not planning on going back to flooded lead acid batteries again but I would like to try a lithium one

    We've used Optima batteries for years!! The only way an old style lead acid battery comes on the place, is if we get new equipment... currently, we have about 40 Optima batteries in use...
    In the last year, we've started using the heavier Yellow top starting/deep cycle batteries... They hold up better in the service truck and in the semis.

    One advantage I didn't hear you say is.. corrosion is pretty much non existent with the Optimas... We always make sure everything is clean, cover the terminals with dielectric grease... Zero issues!!!
    We used to clean everything, then paint the terminals after connecting them... It seals the connection and works also.

    Wow that new flat plate agm battery looks great! Very aesthetically appealing. Goes very well with the overall square design of most muscle cars. Now all they need to do is offer different colors for all the battery types and they would be unbeatable.

      That’s a good question. I’m not sure on the actual weights, I would imagine for the same weight, the pure lead will offer better deep cycle and cold cranking characteristics. I have a couple sitting in my garage, I shall weigh them!

      They aren't too different, I've handled both. Spiral cell optimo batteries are fairly compact, so easier to handle than some batteries

    Great job as usual.I use these batterys in all my antique cars that sit for long periods with out use and they hold there charge. And even in my newer cars when the stock battery goes I replace with a AGM type.I have had one last 15 plus years and went through 3 different cars.Well worth the extra cost.And never had one leave me stuck.What else can I say.

    Remember, AGM and Flooded need different alternator voltages. Swapping these will over or undercharge the incompatible battery. So change the voltage regulator to maintain compatibility.

    You did a great detail explanation between the flooded and closed systems!! 👍 I've always bought my batteries at AutoZone and I buy the top-of-the-line stuff for my car and pay a high price for it. My batteries have lasted way past the warranty because I took care of them. I only use the flooded ones. Many times I have forgotten to turn my lights off at night and my battery had to be charged up. I let it run for a half an hour then take it driving for awhile and they were great batteries. The last battery that was put in by my auto technician without my knowledge was another unknown closed battery that they said was a great battery. BS. After two months and I charged the battery after I left my lights on and let it run for a half an hour and drive it. A couple days later I drove it and it was okay. Couple days later it was dead, dead dead I tried charging it up and it wouldn't work. So this is when I decided to check out the difference between the closed systems and the flooded systems. I think this kind of battery would be kind I would want for my car because it's an older car taged classic 1996 Thunderbird with only 65,000 true miles on it. And it runs like a charm and I still race it! I would consider buying this battery. Thank you.

    Let's say I purchased a yellow top Optima battery. If the car won't turn over and the battery seems dead, and I need to get somewhere immediately due to an emergency or other reasons, can I use a traditional battery charger that most of us have in our garage (on max output setting voltage or amps) to charge this battery like a traditional flooded-lead battery?
    What about short and long term risk from this event?

      He kind of sold out. Optima used to be a great batteries before they were sold in 2009 and closed their plant in the USA. Now, they are made in Mexico with inferior parts.

    I have a small mat-type battery for my garden tractor, and it has out performed the other two regular batteries I had before. It's still working fine after several years of Wisconsin's freeze/thaw cycles.

    Good info thank you! Here in AZ the water filled batteries do not last at all in our summers and I end up topping them off every couple months in the summer. I put an AGM (not Optima brand) in my truck a few years ago and have been very happy

    Thumbs up for Optima batteries! I've always used the yellow top for my car stereo needs. They will help with the lights dimming on hard bass notes. My old 2000 watt amplifier liked to kill batteries about every 3 months but this one lasted til I sold the car. It was over 8 years of abuse.

      The alloy used typically in a flooded lead acid battery is antimony(1-4%). Replacing antimony with calcium gives you a maintenance free battery. Advantages of calcium include improved resistance to corrosion, no excessive gassing, less water usage and lower self discharge. The case can be sealed so the small amount of gassing can condense and return to the cell.

In the past, for me, buying a battery was nearly as confusing as buying a matress (well, not quite).😜 I didn't really understand the difference in design and price difference between brand X vs. brand Y.     i put a red top optima in my 07 Xterra once the old factory battery was getting funky.. and it starts up quicker and is great. Plus they're not that expensive compared to other regular batteries. I'm glad i switched it up to the optima. Great video as always.

    Excellent as always.
    As a personnal experience with Optima Battery, mine was a Yellow Top and was 12 years old in my car (I say was, but you'll see why). Got a bit of audio that needed a better battery.
    Sold the car (hence the was) with the battery still in it (a,d the audio). Did a test of the battery before selling it : 100% charge ok, and still giving 100% of the voltage ! Never had to recharge it !
    Really good quality, and I will go again with Optima on my next car.

    What I don't appreciate about this video Jason is that you did not state any disadvantages of the "alternative" designs of batteries vs the conventional flooded lead acid ones. There must be some. And this made it too obvious that its just a "Pay to show our product" sort of video with little objective value.

      The main purpose was to demonstrate the chemical differences. Like anything, you get what you pay for; AGM style batteries are significantly more expensive (the disadvantage).

      I get that, but the message in this video is basically - The battery that is probably in your car is not as good as this Optima one, buy it. Im sure there are more disadvantages in that design other than just price. In today's level of technology it's always about tradeoffs. And even if it was just the price, mentioning it in the video would be appreciated.
      Keep up the great work. These are just my two cents in form of (hopefully) constructive criticism.

      Because it's more expensive, doesn't like being stored fully charged, internal resistance can go up quite rapidly over time and it requires way more "management" than a lead-acid battery increasing not only costs of the battery, but also battery management electronics.

      Lipo batteries have many issues. For example, they can't tolerate sitting fully charged for extended periods of time. Lithium batteries also need intelligent management systems, which would add cost, complexity and points of failure. They don't tolerate heat either, which is a big problem for an automotive battery. Another major problem is their environmental impact. Lead acid batteries are nearly 100% recyclable, and you get paid for them. Lithium batteries, however, are much more difficult to recycle, and they are expensive to dispose of properly. Recycling a lithium battery costs more than you'd make off the materials, so a lot of batteries would probably end up in landfills. Another major issue is safety. If a lead acid battery gets overcharged, it damages it and may leak acid. However, if a lithium battery gets overcharged, especially a large enough one to be used in a car, you have a fiery bomb. Same goes for the battery getting crushed in an accident. All in all, 25-30 pounds of weight savings is not enough to replace lead acid batteries with lithium batteries in automotive applications.

    A FLA battery is 2.1V per cell not 2.2V with resting/fully charged voltage of 12.6V not 13.2. AGMs are usually around 12.8V. You also could have discussed acceptance rate during charging in that AGM batteries can be charged more quickly as they can accept more current.

    I quite dislike the editing in this video..... we dont need to have strafing shots and scene changes every 3 seconds while he is describing something and demonstrating it on paper..... honestly its not only silly looking, but it actually distracts from what he is doing cause you keep shifting the focus away from the topic.
    Criticism aside though, good video content, I have always wondered what the difference was.

      I should also note, It was spicifically distracting when you are doing the in deth explanations/demonstrations on paper. there were many situations where it did actually work, like when you were shoing the actual products exc.

      I really don't care about the change of angle as I was not paying attention to these angle changes. My ears are focused on hearing the content but my eyes drift multiple times to that distraction of a candy red car up in the lift. Having the Porsche is a "convenient inconvenience".

      TIP: understand what you're seeing before you say anything about it. Two comments on this video: 1. you got a few things wrong here. Minor details but this is my speciality professionally so I noticed. 2.     I really wish you were my teacher when i was going through my mechanics courses... You would have been the best teacher
