- The Rolex Submariner "Big Crown" 6538 is not only one of the most desired and expensive vintage dive watches, but also one of the most famous James Bond watches of all time. Unfortunately, they are extremely rare and can sometimes cost an arm and a leg. However, it serves as wonderful inspiration for my latest Seiko modding project. In this video, I discuss a brief history of the Rolex 6538, unbox and give my initial impressions of my custom modded affordable alternative, and announce an exciting watch giveaway from Squale.
To find out more about the giveaway, check out my Squale Sub-39 SuperBlue review and the pinned comment at the top of the comments section for details on how to enter:

I have always had, and I still do, love Seiko. So versatile, so robust. No collection is complete without one. A true icon for every enthusiast!
Seiko is the greatest watch brand in the world. LIKED!!
@John Smith Depends on the model. Still nowhere near what the so-called "luxury" brands think they're worth.
looks cleaner without the crown guard, that’s why i like tudors
For me it's the opposite. I prefer the Pelagos. Crown guards have been invented for a reason. You don't want the crown to get bent after it accidentally takes a hit, when you already paid hacktones of money for a Tudor...
Depends on the watch for me and my goal I love the CW Sandhurst with no guards and the BB58. But my marathon MSAR and Damasko DS30 pull them off well
Thank you for the tip of a reliable watch mod maker. Custom watches are incredible. You see customization in so many ways in terms of clothing and accessories. I love that customization in watch making is becoming mainstream.
Looks great! 7 months waiting ... i feel you, still waiting for my order to arrive from US to RO, makes the moment even more exciting.
Ken onion blur is amazing. Love how bond brought so many items to the forefront as luxurious. So many focus on his cars and weapons, but the watches are spectacular
Great looking mod there, TGV. I too would go back to a black bezel insert but the ghost date on the movement wouldn't bother me at all.
Thank you TGV! Great video as always! I love how your Seiko mod dial and bezel look! Enjoy it! 👍🏻
Wow I love how that mod turned out. The watch looks fantastic! Enjoy it!
since i started watching you some years ago I'm impressed every time how absolutely great the intros are. Amazing!
What a fun mod! Really like the look the maker achieved with dial and the hands but agree that a darker bezel will really complete the look. Love the engraved case back and that big crown just can’t be beaten!
I haven’t seen you in awhile! I’m glad to see your show again. Love your tone of voice and knowledge .
I never knew how much I actually wanted a modded SKX. Damn, it's now next on my list!
Man the balance of history, wit, music choice and cinematography influence to your vids are banging.
Thank you so much my friend!
O&U!
Best regards,
TGV
I bought the Lorier Neptune on your recommendation mostly because it looks so similar to the original Bond's (it looks great on the olive/black nato they sell imo). It is my first diver and I am over the moon with it. So thank you!
That Squale looks very classy too, especially for my 6" wrists with those lugs. I suddenly want a second diver and it has only been a few days lol
Wow that is a beautiful Seiko mod, I’m kind of in love with that bezel.
"Shocking....positively shocking"
LOL ;-) deffo one of his best.
Thank you David,
Best regards,
TGV
Great intro, TBV! My favorite Bond watches would be the Breitling Top Time and the Seiko G757 with the Submariner 6538 coming in third.
I must admit, this channel has reawakened my love of watches. I'm sure my wife wouldn't agree lol, but even my daughter has caught the bug and loves Hugo and I got her her first watch at Christmas, which is a Rose gold (plated) Pulsar as she's only 10. But she's been following me on recent buys and helped chose my new Seiko as I was torn between a few models and colours. She told the rather attentive jeweler that she herself wanted an Oris 🤣. The woman looked at me and said, daddy better get working as she knows what she wants lol.
Gorgeous piece, the dial looks amazing and the aged greenish bezel just marries perfectly with it.
To be totally honest, I don't think the green bezel works with the vintage dial. If that was something I'd want I'd go for the full Alpinist look with a green dial and cathedral hands.
Nice observation. I didn't quite notice that at first but after reading your comment I couldn't stop looking at the watch without thinking of your observation.
This bezel insert is ugly and does not look vintage
@@sergelegault6027 so is your mother
Unfortunately you're right. When the modder's attempt to weather the bezel turned it green he should tried something else instead. It's sloppy work and doesn't work as an accurate recreation on the version used on screen.
TGV has a phenomenal storytelling ability. I could listen to these mini documentaries all day. Cheers my friend.
I am flattered and honored.
Thank you Wes,
Best regards,
TGV
Great stuff tristano, I agree with your decission of changing the bezel to smtg more "fine-tuned" with the original rolex model....
So beautiful! Thank you for sharing this customization adventure, outstanding result! Grazie!
Grazie a te Fabrizio.
Best regards,
TGV
Dude you are hard on a knife blade😬 Love the mod on the Seiko. Late 50s - early 60s are my favorite vintage of watches. The bezel insert definitely appears green. Cool custom homage.
love the UG signature on the dial! looking forward to seeing it with the changed bezel to give it the complete connery look
Yes, i5 is is the NH38 movement that you want. Also, you can make it a touch thinner with a thinner case back, though it will only be by a millimetre or so.
Just bought a Lorier on your recommendation ! Was amazed to find a personal response from Lauren and Lorenzo ! I did mention I purchased the watch on your recommendation - Thank you ! Would love a Squale though ... I have the Admiralty Grey NATO on the way, Thanks TGV.
Really had no interest in modded watches - until I saw this video. Thanks for opening me up to a new perspective!
Even has Urban Gentry line added. Nice. Love the vintage look.
Looking at the list of parts it’s amazing how little that excellent movement costs. Hardly seems fair that the dial is almost 3x the movement. Lovely watch
Oooooooh finally, it's here! It's not even my watch and I'm excited lol
Congratulations TGV, it looks ravishing.
Paul's work at Tempus is amazing. Love my SKX 007 stealth watch he made for me earlier this year! Cannot recommend enough.
Spectacular looking mod :o I'm overwhelmed how good it looks, think I fell in love with this one...
It's an excellent mod, great vintage feel, love those warmer colours and big crown. Just needs to be on my
wrist
Can't get enough of these modded Seikos atm!
Such a brilliant watch. Congrats on your new mod mate 👍
It will definitely improve changing that bezel, looking forward to seeing that change.
TGV: “It looks green.”
Me: “Is it not green?”
Just picked up the original Bond watch a few months ago: a Gruen Precision. Manual wind. It's tiny but I love it.
Such great watches and underrated vintage brand.
Congrats ad thank you for sharing, enjoy!
Best regards,
TGV
Cool, I have an Omega automatic that looks similar to that Gruen and I wear it with my 60s tuxedo for the Bond effect. The 510 movement is very nice, overlooked by many people but vintage fans like them. Fortunately Gruen made a lot of these so parts are not difficult to find. Have fun with your new watch!
@@benjaminbarrera214 thanks!
@@theurbangentry indeed, thank you. I too grew up with Moore and Connery Bonds. As an adult though, I shifted to the Le Carre brand of spy novels. More realistic, less action, but the tension is incredibly written.
The feeling when you have a one of a kind Seiko Mod is amazing, awesome mod! 🍻
Daniel Craigs Planet ocean is the watch for me and happens to be the center piece of my watch collection. Great mod!!! I think this influence purchasing my Tudor Heritage Black bay.
Loved the bond intro! Just waiting a few days for my skx013! keep the on doing this content TGV!!!
Coincidentally I just put a red/black/grey Bond style Nato on my Citizen Nighthawk. A simple strap change really does bring new life to the hobby as all you guys say. Nice mod, love the channel TGV!
I've done this a few times myself, but with Vostok Amphibias. I bought base models in the "090 case" which is a modern remake of the original 1967 design. Then it's a matter of getting some OEM parts from Vostok themselves (bezel, caseback, crown, bracelet) and some (IMO, superior) watch hands from third party suppliers. It's all good fun.
What’s up TGV! Love your channel. You have helped me so much on my watch journey. It’s about having fun. Good luck with everything
Your very "limited edition" timepiece looks really good. Quality workmanship! Your personal crest etched on the backside was a nice touch. The price was surprisingly very reasonable. Thanks for sharing!🐱🐉
Really appreciate the price breakdown, that's really useful! Fantastic build!
Nice! I’ve just sent an skx007j for a patina mod also from tempus! Can’t wait to see it finished
The SKX is a typically a thick watch. My stealth mod wears very similarly to your new Bond watch.
Namoki offers a "slim" SKX caseback which should shave it down by several mm.
Thanks TGV. I really like this aged look you’ve given the Seiko, and it was your videos on vintage inspired watches that led me to purchase my Lorier Neptune last year. I’m feeling all giddy about what it will look like in 20 years time as it ages. Good to see you. Richard from 🇬🇧
So glad to hear, enjoy your Nepture!!!
Thank you Richard,
Best regards,
TGV
I agree, id never buy a early reference sub because i couldn't just throw it on when ever i wanted.
Any Bond watch is a great watch. Love the bezel and the dial is beautiful. Perfect for 007
I would actually say that this version of the Rolex Sub is the BEST they have ever made!
Perfect video for a study break, cheers!
That looks absolutely amazing! Great job!
Mr Gentry...you unintentionally, indirectly and unknowingly teach men how to be Gentry with class. Thank you.
Beautiful Seiko mod with that vintage dial and domed crystal. All class
Thanks for the giveaway opportunity! I would never have thought of modding a Seiko to look like Bond's Rolex!
Thank you my friend.
Good luck!
Best regards,
TGV
The jingly jangly Seiko Jubilee is arguably my all time favorite bracelet! Nice piece!
I love how much effort youre putting in your Videos, my favorite Bond Watch is the Omega "Spectre" by the way.
Mannnn. You hit this one right on the dag gone nail!!! I have a 6538. Family piece but I have never worn it and never will. I would say this is the best option outside the Tudor BB58. I mean now you got me wanting to create my Sieko Mod. Spot on in this review!!👍👍👍💯
I'd have to say that my favorite Bond watch is also the Rolex 6538, just because it's been in so many of the earlier films and it's so iconic!
Watch looks great, I wouldn’t change a thing. You’ve inspired me to mod an SKX0013 I’ve been sitting on, (I’ll go with Paul of course). Thanks again for another great video.
Agree with you about the Bezel. But that dial is killer. Very cool TGV.
Favourite bond watch is Ian Flemming's Explorer. He wrote his books while wearing it while in Jamaica, my family's country. The connection makes me smile. Runner up is the Rolex Submariner.
Get the impression you'll tinker with or change this... Got a feelin'! Looks great though!
I really like this.
I could see one with the McLeod crest on the back.
Now just why would TGV want one with the McLeod crest?
@@varanid9 ...well, it would live at my house.
Haven’t watched the video yet. But I’m in love that’s amazing. I love the 6538. The big crown is just amazing. I was tempted to purchase the Watch Experimental Unit homage
From my point of view it’s a very interesting way to have a unique watch but not sure if works to have kind of “looks like” or homage watch, but it really looks beautiful 🤩
The bezel DOES look green through the lens. I like it, as it looks a moss gray-green, almost a federal, but I understand your ambivalence. The movement you want is the SII NH38, as you guessed. As I write, I am wearing a Tissell Explorer homage with that movement and I am very pleased.
The Squale is a beautiful watch as well! Thanks to you and the company for sponsoring the giveaway.
The debate over homages versus mods is never-ending. But we must each choose what we can accept in consonance with our values. Down with frauds, up with honest celebrations!
Correction: feldgrau not federal
Definitely, Gruen the very first watch worn by Bond and the reason I purchased a vintage Rolex built Gruen similar to Connery's.
Some very nice modded touches.... agree about the bezel
I’m a simple man. I see a TGV video, I hit the like button. Amazing looking watch. Tastefully modded to say the least. The end of the giveaway can’t get here soon enough!
Great looking watch! After your last Seiko Mod video, I ended up snagging a beauty from Superscott on eBay you had mentioned. So thanks - now I have a "Blue Submariner" Seiko Mod that I adore.
My favorite on screen bond watch is the Hamilton Pulsar P2 2900 LED digital watch from the movie Live & Let Die.
Love how you modified your SKX! Enjoy it.
Astoundingly good intro, TGV....modernized the theme and used the most classic of all Bond films. Great history and background on the Bond and Fleming use of Rolex pieces in the novels, films, and real life, as well. I have eagerly awaiting your unveiling of your perfect Bond watch, as I also have mine in the works! I am quite impressed with the dial work and agree with you regarding the version. I was unaware of the NH38 not having the ghost date and think that could be a well deserved enhancement to the piece. Love the case back engraving. The excellent lume on the patina is superb. Also love the domed sapphire. With your wrist size I think it will fit beautifully, but I would probably go with a SKX sized case for myself just for figment....the only con for me is as you pointed out the bezel....the greenish hue as well as the faded treatment overall just didn’t seem to fit the desired look. As you said - simplest of tweaks. Excellently well executed. Wear it in good health! As always, thank you for all the hard work and excellent video. Onward and upward!
That SKX case with the 3 O'clock crown position is really cool.
Love the dial. Yes, the bezel is a bit green.
I do really love vintage vibe of that moded seiko. Perfect size, guilt-golded dial and aging green bezel are so astonishing...! However, little disappointed with sided-round case of seiko case. But, such a charming watch with no doubts!
stunning mod, can't get enough of that crystal, does it have an AR undercoating though? in my experience, this kind of crystals are quite reflective
A Seiko with no date wow that is wonderful. My favorite Bond watch is The Seiko TV watch in Octopussy where we see Bond doing a bit camera work to make sure the watch is working!
Yessssss!!! Such a cool choice ;-)
Thank you Stephen,
Best regards,
TGV
I just love your intros and video work. You stand out in this regard tremendously. Fantastic work
Thank you so much! Greatly appreciated.
Best regards,
TGV
007 is what inspired my love for watches. Another great video! Dr. No.
You are correct - - The NH-38 is the movement that will eliminate the 👻 pull.
I recently bought the Seiko 4R38 to put in my Zelos Swordfish II to get rid of that annoying 👻 pull of the NH35 as the dial has no day or date window.
Thank you my friend, that helps me greatly. Enjoy your Zelos!
Best regards,
TGV
A huge shout-out to Urban Gentry for guiding me to my first watch purchase, an NTH Nacken Renegade. Even sized the band with a toolkit you recommended. Of course, on to my next obsession: alternate straps! Bond strap from C&B already on its way.
My favourite Bond watch was the Rolex 1016 of the books! Pure class...
That Seiko rocks, bellissimo, i personally like that bezel, as always compliments!
Absolutely awesome MOD!!!! Although I’m a huge SC it’s Roger Moore for me! Live&Let Die , the theme song !!!! And of course the Submariner 5513!!! WHERE ITS BEZEL turned into the circular saw!!!!!;) Also a magnet;) superb stuff my friend !
I love that patina look on this mod. Pure Class!
i just ordered the san martin retro diver that is very similar to this one! ceramic bezel, saphire crystal, milled clasp with solid end links for 200€. can’t wait for it to arrive.
the San Martin "6200" is occupying my wrist for two weeks now, I think it brings the most of this Bond-flair/buck... You will love it!
@@Machichplatt Tell that to my girlfriend mate! 😁
I really like your videos man, the history, the reviews, the common sense / ethics education you provide and the editing. Congrats and thanks.
No words, just a million thank you for the kindness and inspiration!
Onwards and upwards.
Best regards,
TGV
I love a good Seiko mod! This turned out very well. Enjoy !
Nice video again! I love to learn about watches from your videos and look forward to the next show! I hope you and your family are well.
If you want that Bond big crown look... The Tudor Black bay fifty eight is the best option
Fantastic video TGV! Good luck and best wishes to all!
The Christopher Ward C65 Dartmouth is another good no-date big-crown diver that has a lot of 6538 aesthetics.
That's the great thing about Seikos they can be what you want it to be! Shame Citizen modding never took off as I'm a huge Citizen fan.
