Somewhere around 1996 or so, I was working in a ski shop at our local hill (Schweitzer). This ski bum loved Tool as did most of us at work, and it was on heavy rotation in the shop. I was singing the lead-in to this song, when a woman (mid 50's?) walked in the door looking for help with some of her ski gear. She heard me singing, and asked what song that was as she really liked the lyrics. I told her the song name, and the name of the singer/lyricist. She had me write it down and was emphatic about looking it up to buy that album. Something tells me she didn't care for much of it, other than this opening line.
Not long after this happened, Danny Carey and his wife came into the shop to rent snowboards for a week. Such a kind and happy human being. I still have one of the T-shirts from the giant box of goods he sent to the shop a few weeks later. Just another in a list of life experiences I guess.

Just saw my 13th show since 93 sunday night in Philly 2/20/22....Maynard is every bit as perfect as he's been for 30 years, relentless, goes after every note....the band as a unit may be as tight and ferocious as they have ever been, very few 90's metal bands still selling out NBA/NHL Arenas......absolutely incredible....thanks again for the reaction, I wait for every one of them! Stay kickass!

@@MusicCatsandCoffee interesting fact as well...Maynard was quazi the first singer for Rage against the Machine, Tom Morello from Rage and Adam from Tool went from 1st to 12th grade together in some small little Illinois town I believe and moved out to LA to "make it" in music...as it turns out the two childhood friend guitarist started two of the biggest bands ever...TooL and Rage against the machine...but they were all hanging out and playing together at one time and Maynard even appears on the first Rage Album....and as you have coined it...Angry Maynard first showed his face in the Rage song "Know your Enemy"

The human anal cavity is 4 degrees warmer than the rest of the body. Actually used this song for a subject in a paper I wrote for a intro to psych course. Also, there’s a huge shift between this album and Aenima with the switch to Justin Chancellor as the bassist. Real unsung hero of the band IMO.

I also feel like it's just the evolution/maturation of the band, rather than seeming like 2 different bands. I do agree that Justin has played a huge role in their evolution.
I saw Tool last month. They played songs from every album, and they all flow well together. I think you're right that the early stuff is more accessible though.

You are correct. It is the real 'heavy metal' portion of the Tool collection. After this album things become more cerebral, for the most part, with some good exceptions, like Ticks & Leeches, but that song explains itself well. A lot of early Tool fans are disappointed with the path, while others are super pumped about the newer path, which seems to blossom further with each new album. I mean, if Tool doesn't evolve, it would be sad.

  • @dtpfeiffer
    @dtpfeiffer Před 2 lety +2

They have definitely evolved their sound while remaining distinctively unique. I think Paul being replaced by Justin has a lot to do with it, but it also comes down to them just growing as people and gaining a new perspective with age. Maynard has said that he often feels like an actor when performing older songs because he has moved on from that and he can't keep reliving those things.
The Aenima album seems to be the turning point to me. It was Justin's first album and it also had more radio singles than the others. I see it as the bridge between the raw, angry sound of the early stuff and Lateralus which is much closer to their current songs. Aside from nostalgia, I think it's the favorite of many fans because it has the best balance of aggression and progression.
The evolution of the band and their sound is awesome as a fan because there is a little bit of something for whatever kind of mood you're in.

Been listening to tool since about 94 when I was 20. The first ep and this album were raw and hard and angry (like I was). Aenima then came out and it was a mix between the angry hard tool of the early 90s, with some more extended and subtle longer songs. Starting on their spiritual journey. Then came lateralus and 10000 days. These lbums were starting to ask questions and even take the puss on some of their older works, thoughts and ideas as they looked back with older or mature eyes. Again this sort of mirrored my life cycle at that stage as well.
When fear inoculum came out I was mid 40s, the early tool anger was gone but the album again mirrored my journey as they are also older, different stages of their lives and careers and the album was perfect for the introspection, taking the time to say what it needed to say.
But everyone has their own journey and how/what it means to them so just sit back and enjoy your personal journey. Love your realism in that you seem to give your honest take sat when you do and don't like songs and don't try and sugar coat it.
To be honest I didn't really like most tool songs first time but love them all now

    It's the evolution of Tool
Also, I read an interview once from Revolver, Guitar World, or something like that, referring to what the songs mean or represent...the songs can be interpreted differently by different people, just like a tool can be used for multiple problems.
Something along those lines. No one except Maynard can tell us what a specific song means(to him).....everyone else can have their own interpretation.
    Great album.

  • @little_forest

I definitely would not say, that early tool sounds like a different band to "later" tool. And yes, I already read here a lot of "tool naturally evolving", though I would say your question is very valid. To me, Opiate and Undertow feel a lot like testing grounds for tool, where they still had not their signature style and way of developing, creating albums. So to me there is a very pronounced difference between that early tool and yes, I would say the "actual" tool, starting with Ænima. Only then, they seem to have found a special and distinct workflow and the resulting albums sound much more engaging to me. So to me, Justin Chancellor seemed to be the missing piece that made tool special.
Mmmm, and a lovely date you chose to upload this tool video, at least for us here in Germany/Europe: 22.02.2022

Of course its about anal sex, Maynard loves to use its innuendo meaning into his lyrics that can also be interpreted differently which is the beauty and brilliance of Tool. The next album is ripe with many of those innuendos. The live version of this song shows a transvestite stripping on stage hinting into its meaning and remember Maynard wanted and loves to do comedy. As rigid as he may seem in public to many, to his colleagues and friends he's a straight up clown hence all those wacky outfits onstage especially during 96-98 era. Thank God someone had the forethought to video some of these ridiculously great live shows back then. Most definitely my favorite period from the band live. Musically they get better with age but for the shear angst and grit nothing compares ✌🏽♥️
