  • Wreath Laying in the Garden of Remembrance. www.rte.ie/newsnow. Watch LIVE coverage on RTÉ News Now.
It was day that many people thought would never happen.
It was a moment that history was made. Queen Elizabeth II laid a wreath to honour those who fell in battle fighting for Irish freedom.

Great moment. The past is done, it can't be changed. What we can change is the future and I think most will agree, we don't want a future based on hatred.

Fair play to her!! I'm Irish and I've got nothing against the Queen, she wasn't the person who led the UK to capturing our country, she just so happened to be part of the monarchy.

That history is not entirely accurate. Nonetheless, this was a lovely gesture. Why would anyone want to go back to the suffering & death & hopelessness. Everyone is better off with peace, especially the children. God Save The Queen & God bless the people of Ireland. May Peace forever reign. May the fallen heroes rest in peace.

I agree with you. I hate when people who have nothing to do with it, or fully understand the situation say 'just give it back'.

@puzz09 Subjective indignation might be understandable, but that's not how things are done! What about the african states? During the Empire, the Irish were also involved and an enormous number of Irish were slave traders within the colonial system (William Ronan, Antoine Walsh,Felix Doran, Christopher Butler, Thomas Ryan, James McGauley, David Tuohy, Philip Nagle, among many, many others)! Should the african countries never play the Irish Anthem, because of what happened in times past?

@JDoubIeU because she is the Queen who was coronated as such - titles apply to many people in important positions and give a somewhat properness to such position: notable examples are the title of his holiness the pope, archbishops etc. much more respectful I think than Christian names - hope this helps you understand

Overrated Dragoon wrote Northern Ireland "should be given back" - HM isn't some mediaeval despot, she cannot simply "give back" NI.
The decision to join the RoI, should it ever be taken, will have had to have come from the people of Northern Ireland.

Even if you are Irish, you have to understand that it isn't as simple as 'giving N. Ireland to the Rep.', there were troubles for over 30 years because of this issue!

@RonainMacCathain Why would you say that? you've clearly got your head in the past, yes the British did terrible things thats a known fact, not just ireland country to others, however, so did Ireland, No country is perfect. Why make steps backwards when you can make steps forward to improve relations. After all holding a grudge doesn't get you anywhere.

I'm very into other languages and cultures too. I'm fluent in French and currently studying Spanish and I really want to visit every country in South America because they're all fascinating. I'd like to study Japanese too.
