  • SHODAN - The Karate Black Belt Journey Kyokushin VLOG-46
The journey towards your black belt does not start with the first time you put on the karate uniform try to tie your first belt on, the white belt, take your shoes of and take the first steps feeling the cold surface of the dojo floor with your bare feet, joining your first class doing your first knuckle pushups and learning the proper stances, punches and kicks.
The journey towards your black belt actually starts in my opinion way before that and it starts the minute that you decide in your mind that you want to train as a martial artist because you want to get stronger, stop being bullied in school.. learn how to defend yourself, get some structure in your life that you might lack, be a karate superstar or any other reason you might have that drives you to want to learn martial arts..
Except yes sometimes your parents just put you in martial art class because of their belief that you might get structure and get stronger etc..and this then is the beginning of your martial arts journey towards your black belt.

My Shodan Kyokushin exam was hard. Never experienced in other styles of karate-do. Some schools used protection gear, in the old days no gloves no pads knockdown tournament exam, because, you have to survive 15 fights of 1, 2, or 3 minutes depending on the Kyokushin school requirements. I had done 15 fights 1 minute each, but it feels like fighting for one hour. An Overall, it was Beautiful. Arigatogozaimas. Osu…!!!

Osu That is how a shodan exam should feel like. It should take you to your limits and surpass them :) (do you give up when in hard tines or continue) and also your instructors look at how your character is in these kumite moments of the promotion after 5-6 hr of grulying training. more important then just your physical ability.

I first started training at 15 at a local McDojo. 2 years later I left and started Kung Fu. The Shifu told me that he'll train me as long as he'd like but I'd be more comfortable with full contact Karate. I met Ron Van Clief on the train and he told me about Kyokushin. I found a dojo in Manhattan and went for a year but couldn't afford the classes so I stopped. 18 years later I came back and I'm not stopping ever again!
Btw I test for my 6th Kyu tomorrow.

That is so cool. Where in the city do you train now?
It is so good to see people come back to train karate after a long break, myself I took a long break when I was younger and the best thing that I did is come back to kyokushin and continue my martial arts education..
It's a way of life for me now and hope if I find a new location since our old dojo never reopened I will he able to start teaching the kids program again soon.
      ... but enough of me
Good luck on your promotion tommorrow and here is a video if you like to take a look at of the meaning of 6th kyu level in kyokushin
