I miss cycling in the 1980’s. It was the best era. The machines were elegant and the riders were the best people ever! Damn, there is nothing that even comes close to what racing was like in those days!
You are one of my many heroes that got me started in the bicycle business when I got off the boat…..bellísimo Mr Leprechaun….❤🚵🏼♂️🚴♀️🚴🏻🚴🏼♂️🚵🏼♂️🚵🏿♀️🚵🏿♀️🇮🇹❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️🇺🇸❤️❤️❤️❤️
Hadn't thought about him in years, really nice to see him again looking so well. What a funny, entertaining guy too. Classic slam on SRAM too. Have to agree on older components compared to todays, my 30+ year old Campy still works as good as new!
My main issue (running early 2000s Record and Record/Chorus mix on two bikes) is getting parts: both wear parts and things lost to crashes. I had a devil of a time finding a brake blade for a carbon Record ergo control that got thwacked in a crash this summer.
Totally a nice guy out on the rides and local Colorado races. Old school pro riders were tough to the core. Not worried too much about power numbers, saturation rates, and other empirical nonsense ... they rode with tactics still but they didn't hide behind that bs. Miss bike racing how it was then.
At the Coors banquet, after the Coors Classic. They had a part where Peter Coors gave the first, for retail bottle of Killians to Alan. Alan chugged it and Mr. Coors said, “what do you think?” Alan smiled and said, I tink I’ll have an utter!” They missed using that line for a slogan and I’ll never understand why!
I miss my 90 OS Paramount I had made to my specs. 58cm top tube with a 72 degree seat angle. Classic road racing setup from the 80s and early 90s. Also had Dura Ace with the original STI.
Through a friend of my parents, I got a VIP pass for the 1982 Longsjo Classic..which Alan won after lapping the field. I remember getting drafted by Dick Ring to collect money for primes in the grandstands along the finishing straight. Different times then.

Good on 'ya Alan. I used to enjoy watching you when the team came to the Atlanta area. I believe I saw you win the Athen's Criterium one year as well and shook your hand. All the best!
I have a schwinn paramount waterford from 88, They ride fantastic. Thank you Alan.

That’s funny, I just said that about my 20 year old campy.

I remember watching Alan race in the 86 Coors Classic. He was an animal.
The last of the good Schwinn Paramount models.
Love this story what a great guy

Alan looked great on a bike. The twilight criterium in Athens Georgia was a blur of speed.
he's still a rock star
