    The thing about the Orichalcos is that it’s extremely sinister with how subtly manipulated minds. In the show the reason Pharaoh played it was he saw no other way to win since Raphael had him pinned BUT it should be noted he was wearing the stone Rebecca gave. It’s implied he was influenced to believe that and wasn’t even aware he was manipulated. Especially since in the episode it shows shots of the stone a few times. Then when the seal is played it’s even stronger in its influence and has a lasting impact.
    It was an intense episode for sure in the show and even it’s way more comedic here I do love how LK nailed Yami being sinister. Especially a moment later on in an episode or two.
    Also for Raphael’s backstory in the original Japanese version I believe was that his relatives took everything of his family’s and wanted nothing to do with him after he survived. Essentially taking everything and abandoning him. And even when he became a duelist people wanted to take advantage of him. eventually he was recruited by Dartz.
    In the English version they stated his family is alive but forgot about him which I assume is 4Kids censorship since there’s a scene where he dug up the graves and there were the skeletons of his family in the Japanese version. Again LK just put his own spin into things which is more comedy then making sense. Doesn’t actually mean that’s what happened in the original S4

    • @bluetoon1499
      @bluetoon1499 Před 3 lety

      I just watched the episode subbed and dubbed to compare them and I'm torn. There's a lot I like about each version, tbh. In the sub Raphael believes in destiny, that everything that happened to him was fated: it was his destiny to be in a shipwreck, for his family to die, for him to be stranded on an island, for Dartz to recruit him, and to defeat Yami. It seems like his defense mechanism to deal with the trauma was to believe that these events happened for a reason, as part of a grand plan, and the outcome will justify all the suffering. That's also why he is willing to steal people's souls and wipe out humanity: the ends justify the means. The problem of course is that humans didn't kill his family like with Alister. Alister's motivation makes perfect sense, but Raphael's is a bit weird. If human corruption resulted in that shipwreck, it would make more sense why he believes humanity is evil, but all the humans in his life were kind to him, both his family and the people who rescued him. He should be angry at nature, not civilization.
      In the dub, they rewrote it so that his family survived, but they all moved on and forgot about him. Like you said, that change strengthens his motivation a little, because he feels betrayed by his family and has reason to believe that deep down humans are evil. At the same time, the dub changes his goal from wiping out humanity to "saving" it. In the dub he believes MOST people are evil, but those chosen by the Orichalcos are pure of heart and he wants to overthrow the evil humans. I think this version is interesting, but its very different and I think it takes away some of the impact.

    • @sanddry738
      @sanddry738 Před 3 lety

      @@bluetoon1499 Yeah it’s so interesting to see the different versions. I haven’t watched the Japanese version of the show (I REALLY should eventually. I’ve heard good things) but I like how it’s two sides of the same coin in Raphael’s case. Both versions leading him to lose faith in people and beleieving them to be evil. Then you have this all powerful being telling you how to fix things so of course he would believe there’s destiny involved. Not to mention the orichalcos influencing people so who knows how long that’s been going on as well with him to keep that negative view. He and Dartz really parallel the Pharaoh in interesting ways. Dartz I’ll discuss towards the finale but it’s interesting how Raphael and Yami both believe in destiny, respecting and cherishing their monsters, and a sense of honor. Fun stuff to look at and analyze.

      There's so much going on with this scene. Even in the original series Yami always wins, aside from Yugi deciding to surrender out of mercy for his opponents. This trend is so common that all his friends (and most of the viewers) assume that he will definitely beat Raphael. Not only did Yami lose, but he lost after his opponent willingly handed him the most powerful card in his deck. This is uncharted territory for Yami. Up until now he had total confidence in himself, because he's the hero, he has destiny, the Millennium Puzzle, and the heart of the cards on his side. Losing has completely shattered his confidence and made him vulnerable.
      This scene works even better in abridged, because abridged Yami has always been a cocky, wisecracking jerk who is full of himself. We almost expect him to make a joke at Yugi's expense, but instead he's not only sad, but so sad that he has been reduced to little baby making a scene in public crying over his own hurt feelings. His behavior is so radically different than the Yami we are familiar with that its like he's a completely different person.
      Of course, all of this is even more emotional because it is Yami's fault AND HE KNOWS IT. He's not angry at Raphael. He's full of guilt over how his own actions hurt Yugi. Its like he's developing a conscience for the first time.
      Say what you want about Season 4, but I love this shit. Some of the best character development in the entire series right here.

      Nah, the idea was that since humanity has the capacity for evil it should not exist, including himself.
      Fun fact, the seal or orichalcos doesnt just make you evil, it brings to surface already existing evil.
      The ideology of Dartz is that the seal has shown that humanity has fallen to evil and therefore must be exterminated, including themselves.

    Pretty sure Yugi won that duel against Jaden. It’s been many years since I’ve seen it but I’m pretty sure the last scene is Jaden sending his monster to fight Slyver. Slyver had a lot more attack points at that moment and it probably would have ended that duel right after the cut.

      Perhaps, but if in the last episode of Yugioh you saw the Pharaoh summon all 3 god cards and then suddenly the episode ended, would you have thought Yugi had any chance against them?

      Either way, the important thing about that duel was to get jaden out of the gutter since he lost his innocence and love for the card game.

      Yeah but yugi is still the king of games, asspulls and cheaters so there’s no way Jaden won

    The writting was so bad, they gave Rafael a ton of anime only cards with broken effects and even then yugi could have won without risking using the orichacamalos. He even drew defusion, which would have let him free his monster and refuse it again to at least stall another turn. Season 4 BS ftw.

      Season 4.....

      Idk I think that can be explained pretty easily. Yami used the effect of the Eye of Timeas to combine it with Dark Magician Girl. He didn't use Polymerization, the card that typically fuses monsters together. Maybe Defusion only works on monsters that were fused by Polymerization.
      As for the broken anime only cards, the Oricalcos group has tons of money and resources, so they can acquire rare and powerful cards. Season 4 has a lot of plot holes and strange writing choices, but I don't mind the way this duel plays out.

      @@bluetoon1499 it was trapped. Defusion (which he drew with card of sanctity) would have freed his monster and then he could refuse it right away because of how timaeus works.

      @@renatoramos8834 I know, but what if the combination between Timeas and DMG is not considered a normal "Fusion monster". Idk TImeas is a weird card with magic OP powers, like the Egyptian God cards, so maybe it can't be effected by Defusion.
      The show never explains this part, but I'm just saying I don't think its a plot hole.

      @@bluetoon1499 defusion's effect is to send one of your fusion monsters back to the extra deck and the materials back from the graveyard. Even if tim didn't come back, the dark magician girl would. But being anime, tim should return.
