  • Australia's 2023 @EurovisionSongContest entrant, the progressive synth-pop metal quintet VOYAGER are giving their ninth-most qualified takes on the 2024 Eurovision official entrants!
It's been recommended to us to no end, so we're finally having a goosey gander at the daddiest track this year from the Netherlands' own @joostklein1 - Europapa!
Which seminal 90's dance act gets a shout out here? What's the worst thing that could happen to a Nutella sandwich? Can we think of an amazing name for an all natural bodybuilder? All the questions you didn't (and still probably won't) know had anything to do with this song!
    From us,
    to you...

Not only that. When his dad died his mom took it really badly and had to be admitted for a while. During that time Joost went back and forth between his older brother and sister's place. When he went to visit his mom once he was the one who found her lifeless body

You need to read the back story. The song is about the loss of his parents and his emotional journey.

We approach these as first time viewers/listeners without any backstory (unless we've had spoilers). This is the mannner in which most Eurovision viewers watch the final. It's more fun to do it this way and then read the back story/lyrics later to really get that "a-ha" moment and start to connect more deeply with the song.

That was my immediate thought. But then I changed my mind as it’s only us Eurovision nutters who bother looking any deeper into the story and unless people get the message about the song from their commentator, they’ll be judging it on what they see (and don’t understand as so few people speak Dutch). I still think it’ll do really well on the night.

  • @mikkdc
    @mikkdc Před 29 dny +136

He used to watch Eurovision as a kid, with his dad and was his wish to one day be on stage and his dad said something like "You can achieve anything you want, if you work hard enough". He lost his dad when he was pretty young and the song is pretty much him saying "Look papa, I made it".

    • @Mr.K.dilkington1965
      @Mr.K.dilkington1965 Před 18 dny +1

Yeah he lost both parents by the age of about 14, his dad and mom within a one year span.

  • @1Lyvyan
    @1Lyvyan Před 28 dny +187

This song has a deeper meaning. 'Papa' is translated 'dad' in dutch. Joost lost his dad to cancer when he was 12 and his mom a year later because of a cardiac arrest. When he was younger he watched the Eurovision with his parents and said “I’m gonna sing at Eurovision one day”. Joost sings that no matter where he goes or what he eats, he can not escape the pain of this loss. In the end he says goodbye to the pain of his loss by burning the photo, without losing the memory. This song is also an ode to Europe. His dad told him that it’s a world without borders, because borders are invented by humans. And that you can create your own world. The dance break is gabber music - a music style that was invented in the Netherlands, and the sub genre is called happy hardcore. Bringing a personal loss, the feeling of Europe and the dutch culture together; that is art.
The lyrics have a lot of layers:
    Europe let’s come together!
    It’s now or never!
    I love you all!
    Welcome to Europe
    Stay here until I die
    Euro-pa-pa, Euro-pa-pa
    Welcome to Europe
    Stay here until I die
    Euro-pa-pa, Euro-pa-pa
    Visit my friends in France
Or take a long walk to Vienna
I want to leave the Netherlands
    But my passport is gone
    Fortunately don't need a visa
    To be with you
So take the bus to Poland
    Or the train to Berlin
I have no money for Paris
    So use my imagination
Do you have a euro please
    Say "merci" and "please"
    I lost everything
    Except time
    So am travelling every day
    For the world is mine
    Welcome to Europe
    Stay here until I die
    Euro-pa-pa, Euro-pa-pa
    Welcome to Europe
    Stay here until I die
    Euro-pa-pa, Euro-pa-pa
    Euro-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa
    Euro-pa-pa-pa
    Euro-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa
    Eu-ro-pa!
    Ich bin in Deutschland
    Aber Ich bin so allein
    Io sono in Italia
    but still I feel pain
    Am running from myself
Calling for "help!" all day long
Yes I even give people money
But there is no one to help me
    I don't need es-car-gots
    Don't need fish 'n chips
    Don't need paella, no
I don't even really know what that is
    Turn on the radio
    I hear Stromae with "Papaoutai"
    Won't stop until they say
"Yes, yes, he does that very well ey!"
    Welcome to Europe
    Stay here until I die
    Euro-pa-pa, Euro-pa-pa
    Welcome to Europe
    Stay here until I die
    Euro-pa-pa, Euro-pa-pa
    Euro-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa
    Euro-pa-pa-pa
    Euro-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa
    Eu-ro-pa!
    Euro-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa….
    Welcome in Europe boy!
At the end of the day
    We are all human beings
    My father once told me
    It's a world without borders
    I miss you every day
    Is what I secretly whisper
    You see dad
    I listened to you
    Is what I secretly whisper
    You see dad

As for Alex's potential health & safety concerns (which he seems to be slacking these days), a burning windmill...speeding mobility scooters... those shoulder pads that one false move and they could knock you out. Could you imagine the chaos on stage with all that going on! Getting Danny's car on was no mean feat but a flaming windmill? Seriously though good luck to Joost and all at Eurovision 2024. Joost is an artist who create music with double meanings. The beat you heard is a party but it’s actually a sad song about his parents. Many people who don’t speak Dutch they miss interpreter the song. But the stage director of The Netherlands said we are all going to see a total different side of this song. So people could understand the message even without speaking Dutch.

Regardless of genre and style, you all are willing to recognise when songs have achieved what they set out to do, which is what should be the most important.

The song is about how much he loves being able to travel wherever he wants in Europe without even a passport, but over the song he starts realising that no matter how much he travels he can’t escape from his problems and sorrows.
Then at the end he confronts his demons and thinks back to when his dad died

  • @JadedKate
    @JadedKate Před 28 dny +4

A dutch boy on youtube broke down this entire video with explanations and omg there is SO MUCH double meaning in these lyrics !
If you hear the song without Joost's backstory, it's just fun and a good laugh...
but if you hear all the things he's had to go through in his lifetime you'll be amazed at the sheer scope of it.
"I don't need a visa in order to be with you" - he's talking about the fact that he has his parents with him in the spirit world, and all he has to do is think about them in order to "be with them"
"I truly lost everything but time"
    - after both his parents died, he was actually homeless, he had nothing, he lost his parents and his home and all his belongings
"I want to leave Netherlands but my passport is missing" - again a subtle "nod" to him being homeless and having literally no identity card
The Stromae Papaoutai reference is a song like this where the singer misses his dad who died way too soon
Hopefully that sheds some light onto the lyrics. The video in and of itself is worthy of another full explanation 👏

About the country songs: There's a team in the Netherlands that picks the Eurovision entries each year. So we have no say in it. That team happened to pick some artists with country songs a few years ago. The Dutch are way more into pop music and dj stuff. Although there is an area in the country called Achterhoek where the country genre is very popular. It's just not as popular anywhere else.

part of the answer for "why country music??" is 2014's Common Linnets performance. they came second, and after that Ilse De Lange, the woman of the duo, had a lot of say over dutch entries for YEARS. in fact, 2019's Duncan Lawrence was one of her mentees in a precious The Voice season!

Every line of this song has a deeper meaning and is about Joost's suffering after he first lost his father to cancer at a very young age and his mother to a heart attack a year later. What on the surface is a cheerful song is actually the opposite. There is a video on CZcams (in Dutch) that explains almost every rule and the meaning behind it. czcams.com/video/y2H7aRiOXSM/video.html

Why is it “interesting” Australia is made up of a lot of different cultural backgrounds including European we understand songs. We may be far away from Europe but we are the same people with thoughts and problems just like anyone else in the world. 😊

The end of europapa is dark because he lost both his parents and when he was little he told his parents that he would make it to the Eurovision song festival.

  • @citizensallianceofaustrali697

The meaning of the song reminds me of your song last year. A voyage that we are all on, which is individual to everyone, and which some Europeans did not get at first but you guys pulled it through for a well deserved top ten finish! If he can get the staging right this is a definite top five contender, due to the huge televote he should get, and he just needs to bring a great stage show and vocals to get some of that jury vote. Just a heads up I present a music show on my local community station RamFm 103.3 Goulburn eevry Sunday night and from 6pm to 10pm AEST, and I am half way through my top 200 songs of Eurovision countdown, however I am taking a break from the countdown this Sunday as I will be commencing the 3rd hour of the program with my favourite top five songs from Malom this year and at the top of the 4th hour I will play the top five in the betting markets.

Maybe they wanted to ‘blind’ react to the songs but wish they had put the CC on so they could have read along with the lyrics!!!
Multiple songs they have little idea about because they haven’t looked at the translated lyrics 🤔
Like react without the translation so their opinions are unbiased then look up the translation?

    Short explanation of the song:
His father died from cancer when he was 12, his mother died a year later from a heart attack. His father always said that boundaries are created by humans, so we can create our own. In the song he is travelling but he realizes he can't escape all the sadness and past trauma, no matter where he is. He takes his sadness everywhere with him. Europapa is a letter to his parents and him saying goodbye to all the hurt and tears he has been holding onto in his life: he is finally moving forward (the burning of the house/windmill). He promised his parents he would be on the Eurovision stage one day. This is his way of telling his parents "look, I did it". There are a lot of easter eggs in this song and in the video. The YT channel Overthinking It has a great explanation video! It's a seemingly very happy song with a very serious and tragic meaning.

Well the remark that the first half is sarcastic is a quite a good read on the song.
It's not really sarcastic, but it's a similar concept.
The ending strips back the pretences of the music and shows you what the lyrics were trying to say all this time.

So the “curveball” at the end to my knowledge is an Outro that goes outside of the 3 minute limit, so I don’t believe they can keep it :( unless they do something clever like have it play as they leave the stage- is that even allowed? I agree with Danny, the last bit hit me like a tonne of bricks too (even moreso when you google the meaning- it’s a tribute to his parents who died)- but it somehow gives something that’s otherwise just a whole lot of fun some really unexpected weight, which is awesome to see in Eurovision. I also absolutely love that it’s in Dutch- what an absolutely beautiful and funky language. I’m dying to see Sweden send something in Swedish but I don’t think we’ll see that anytime soon 🤣 but home language entries hit so different, especially when the language is one you’re not really familiar with. Dutch sounds like haunted German to me and I’m so about it 🤣. I so hope you guys continue doing these in the future, as an Aussie I miss your presence in it this year so these videos are nice to see :)
