  • Jerry Mander was one of 45 leading scholars, authors and activists who convened at The Great Hall of Cooper Union, New York City, on October 25-26, 2014, for the public presentation: "Techno-Utopianism and the Fate of the Earth." Speakers discussed the profound impacts-environmental, economic and social-of runaway technological expansionism and cyber immersion; the tendency to see technology as the savior for all problems. For more info, see ifg.org/techno-utopia/program/ .
Jerry Mander is the founder, former director, and presently distinguished fellow of the International Forum on Globalization (IFG), a San Francisco “think tank” focused since 1994 on exposing the negative impacts of economic globalization, and the need for economic transitions toward sustainable local economies. He was also, until recently, program director of the Foundation for Deep Ecology. IFG has been widely credited as the principle organizer of the immense protests against the World Trade Organization (WTO) in Seattle, 1999, closing down the Doha round.
Mander was trained as an economist in the 1950s (Columbia University), but his early career was as president of a major commercial ad agency, Freeman, Mander & Gossage, and then as founder of the country’s first nonprofit ad agency in 1971, Public Media Center, which ran advertising and publicity campaigns for Sierra Club, Greenpeace, Friends of the Earth, and various indigenous and antiwar groups. These campaigns included the celebrated Sierra Club campaigns (with David Brower) that kept dams out of the Grand Canyon, established a Redwood National Park, and stopped production of the Supersonic Transport (SST).
Mander’s most recent book (2012) is "The Capitalism Papers; Fatal Flaws of an Obsolete System." Prior books include international best-sellers "Four Arguments for the Elimination of Television," and "In the Absence of the Sacred," both critiques of the growing negative power of technological systems. Other books include "The Case Against the Global Economy" (with Edward Goldsmith), "Alternatives to Economic Globalization" (with John Cavanagh), "Paradigm Wars: Indigenous Peoples’ Resistance to Globalization" (with Victoria Tauli-Corpuz) and "The Superferry Chronicles" (with Koohan Paik.)
Mander has been called “the patriarch of the anti-globalization movement” (New York Times, 2007). He was cited among “The 100 Leading Visionaries of the 20th century” by Resurgence Magazine.

Population density stress is killing us now through all of our "diseases of civilization". Jerry often talks about our chronically elevated stress response, but lacks the biological training to convert his insights into physiological terms. We are addicted to our own stress response and must stay in a high stress state to avoid the pain/anxiety of withdrawal. Mother Nature has designed into our physiology a population limitation system and our overactive stress response is it. When constantly in a high stress condition, we have greatly elevated cortisol blood levels and they are destroying us, except for our expensive ($3.5T), heroic (Emergency Rooms), extensive medical support system, without which we would not be alive. And human overpopulation is the cause: population density stress is killing us now. Read "Stress R Us" on Amazon Books for the details.

So few views and even fewer thumbs up. I hold little hope for us and our Biosphere. The world is Pompeii and Mt. Vesuvius is rumbling.

Population growth is a major contributor to these problems

Population density is an issue in many regions. However, population as in too many isn't true.
Resource allocation done properly and balances in growth, delivery, and production would eliminate starvation.
WHO, U.N. has never lacked the funding to do their job. However, those funds are skimmed off of up front, extra charges and overpaying to line pockets, then corruption on the ground- in the agencies, and the distribution networks as a matter of business is accepted rather than prosecuted with lethality due those who would murder millions for profit not theirs to take...

@RC Christian I'm not affected by his name.
I merely question the intentions of parents who give a name to their kids just to make a stupid pun.
It's like if you took one of the worse prank phone calls Bart made to Moe in the Simpsons and decided to use it for your own child.
I'm just glad my parents gave me proper biblical names, so I wouldn't be the butt of the joke all through the education system.
In case you didn't get it, "gerrymandering" is the term people use to describe the act of dividing voting districts in a city in a certain way in order to make sure that a side has a decided advantage.
I just have a hard time imagining that they picked the first name "Jerry" out of a hat or something.
There's thousands of first names that wouldn't have made "Mander" into a slightly funny joke.
Frank Mander sounds like a PI.
Joseph Mander, I'd wager, would be the name of a minor league baseball player.
Isaac Mander, the first man to walk on the surface and shoot an inhabitant, of Mars.
Jerry Mander? That's like a backhand slap from parents who want to see you fail.

I am constantly impressed at how easily beguiled enchanted and ensnared people are by such quorums of Naked Emperors.
    All hail the hierophants.
When will you come to understand, success in Academia/publishing is reserved for sycophants like this whom form the pillars of false opposition and offer only intellectual DISTRACTION techno-fear porn.
Such is to be expected from such well trained masters of propaganda.
If he was any serious threat to TAVISTOCK he would have long ago been retired silenced discredited and forgotten.
For a less politically motivated look at the false hope and illusions of technology try Jaque Ellul.
For staggering insight into the forbidden science denied us and the infinite potential it offers.

Nah, we're living in a dystopian nightmare future. See, I knew from your very first comment that you're yet another libertardian troll on a leftist video. Doesn't that tell you anything about the viability of your ideology?
Read _The Great Transformation_ and stop trolling leftist videos. You're never going to convince anyone here of anything but the readily apparent fact that you're yet another libertardian troll on a leftist video.
