I live in the Bay Area as well. I can tell you that a house like that will need to be purchased “100% cash” as the property is basically a tear down. No mortgage lender will approve financing when there are health and safety issues present with the house. The value of the home/site is still about $1.5M due to the value of the land in that location.
If $1.5M is their maximum purchase price, they can still find a home in the Bay Area, but Los Altos (where they live) and the surrounding area is out of the question.

California broadly and Silicon Valley are different. Median house price in San Jose is I believe 1 million or a little higher. You can go farther out and find things and I know a lot of people who commute 2 hours to work here because of housing prices.

For the privilege of living in Commiefornia central. Absolutely ludicrous. Tell me what is so great about living in Silicon Valley that I can't find elsewhere in the US. With an income tax rate of 9% for people making 60k a year, and a state wide sales tax of 7% (which goes to the seller who then of course raises the prices), it's insane anyone would want to live there.

CuZ of high demand and low inventory. So sellers have the leverage to sell high! Someone will actually buy that and demolish the home.
