this is Dana Colley from Morphine and it pains me to read all the mis-information regarding Mark. Mark never touched Heroin. Mark died of natural causes namely a heart attack he was 46 years old and has left a legacy that will live on long after the sniveling rumor mill has gone bankrupt. He died in Palestrina Italy in front of a thousand adoring italian music lovers. So before anyone attempts to speak about what they no nothing it would help to get the facts straight.
Morphine was a too brief but self-changing episode in my music listening career. Regret not seeing M in concert. Probably be here in Atlanta every year. :(
Bullshit! Then why the hell did he write this song? I appreciate morphine trying to keep kids from thinking smack is cool but jeezus listen to these lyrics, lol. Bueana is also about smack.
@@joeyoung1498 So in your opinion, you can't write about something unless you've personally experienced the effects? I guess JK Rowling has actually gone to a wizard school and used a magic wand. I guess Ben Shapiro has actually gone to war (as if). I guess we should discount everything historians say, because they've not actually been to those places. - If you can observe something, understand something, feel something, empathise with someone over a topic, research something or just generally be creative, you can write about things you've never personally dipped into. If you bothered to watch documentaries about Mark's life, with interviews from friends and family, you would know that he had never been in the best of health, even from a young age, and it was well known that he smoked cannabis extremely frequently. Nobody connects Sandman with hard drugs. His death was a tragedy whatever the case. RIP Mark.
people are just not very smart.... it's the same idea as The Verve song "Now that drugs don't work" has nothing to do about wanting to get high on drugs.
I was there, in Palestrina, the night of july 3, 1999. He was singing and playing and jumping so great. His last words were SUPERSEX, then it was like he was shot with a sniper rifle. Not a lament of pain, not a cry for help. I'll never forget!
I was there too. After he fell backwards, a guy next to me shouted laughing: "A bello de casa" (something like "hey, mommy's boy" for non-Italian users). He thought he was faking it. Terrible night.
How many groups sound as good live as they do in the studio? Very few. Morphine were a breath of fresh air in the 1990s. No one in popular music sounded - or sounds - anything like them. They were a revelation, and entirely new approach to sound and song, and we're better off for it. .
long time fan, but I only noticed this line very recently: "I propose a toast to my self control / you see it crawling helpless on the floor" BRILLIANT.
I saw these at the Camden Underworld back in 1994 on my first night out ever in London May 1994. I was 18 and very young and naïve. Never forget that night. Mark Sandman RIP
Mark & band were completely unique and incredible. Its so sad that Mark died so young!! His poor mother lost like three of her children! I wish I could have seen them live! I LOVE Mark Sandman!!!
Geez, just imagine what Mark Sandman went through to write this song. This is probably one of the most honest songs regarding pain. Mark Sandman, we miss you.
A few words If I may: Mark, you left too soon We all have expiration dates that's true..but still You had a vibe from the beats and a Raymond Chandler swagger The music courses on, but... We miss you Brother
I’m very grateful and lucky that I was able to see Morphine play in a rather small venue in Nashville, TN back in 1998. It was incredible, they were amazing. I still come back to their music after all of these years because no one will ever replace them. They are on my top ten favorite bands list. RIP Mark Sandman, we miss you! ❤️
I love these guys. I work in a record store and I play these guys sometimes. I usually can't get all the way through the CD before somebody will ask to buy it.
I was privledged enough to have seen them at the Middle East in Boston back in the day. I almost died on the way home but other than that I'd say it was one of the best concert's I've ever seen. RIP Mr. Sandman
I saw them in Argentina!!! It was awesome. Not only the music but the singer's talk. Such a nice guy! The following day I bought all the morphine records.
Sadly I never got to see these guys in concert, but I saw them on the John Stewart show and I was hooked. Sad that Mark passed at such a young age, thanks for posting this so that we can all remember how cool he was.
I'm not saying I am the reason Mark started playing bass but when I met him he had a bass but guitar was his main axe. We jammed quite a few times and it was frustrating for him because he always knew how how he wanted the bass to go. As a bassist I thought he was a bit of a pain in the ass about it, but I miss those days just hanging out and playing music
I was bartending at Peabody's Down Under, Cleveland during this act...standing room only and I allowed folks to sit on the bar so they could see. Classic, mature and in control...one of the best shows I've ever seen.
What a great band Morphine was! I saw them six times and they always put on a spectacular show. Used to run into Mark Sandman at the Middle East and Green Street Grill, nursing a pint of beer at the bar like everybody else. He is so missed in the Boston music scene.
Mark Sandman died of a massive heart attack in 1999 at age 46. He was not an addict; never was. Sweating so much might have been a symptom of heart disease.
It could be but so could high blood pressure. And high blood pressure is usually synoymoys with heart attack. It often co tributes to it. My boyfriend had sky high blood pressure and he used to sweat a lot. A tip off something was off. Thank god his blood pressure is now well controlled by medication.
It's not mentioned much but Mark (r.i.p) while driving a cab in Boston, got stabbed in the chest by some a-hole who also robbed him, I think that had something to do with his heart attack,he was a great guy and we lost him too soon.
I saw them in Orlando in 1999. It is, to this day, one of the best shows I've ever seen. I think they just did that on the regular. Ya know, blow people's minds. :D
I saw 2 concerts of them in Portugal. One of the best bands of all time by music and concerts. I met Mark in concert, we were drinking a beer and talk, was impeccable. It is sad to have left so soon ...
poor thing he's obviously sick in this video.. I still listen to Morphkne every single week if not day.. Mark was one of the best lyricists since Joplin, Cash etc its just new blues and story telling butnhe was great.. whe band was great! best sax I ever heard and I'm a music junkie
Fyawnym---so sorry you never got to see Morphine live. Saw them in 96 in Pittsburgh and it still is one of my top 3 BEST most favorite shows EVER! Met Mark and he was so great. Wish he was still around.............
Is there anybody who doesn't? Anywhere? Even people who've never heard of him. Even nomadic hunters in Outer Mongolia sensed his departure - as if thousands of voices cried out and were suddenly silenced.
Too cool. I live near D.C. and I saw them at 9:30. This band and particularly this song define a time and place in my life. I will always feel loss over the death of Mark Sandman. Thanks for the vid.
Damn.... Such a great song. So meloncoly, so real... I dig the lower-end melody of this song. It really brings the song to life. A nice tight sound, it makes you forget its a 3-man outfit.
I still miss those blokes as a band. I saw em live quite a bit. Always lucky to be in the right place at the right time. There will never be another Morphine. They died with Mark. Last time I saw them was in Chicago..Randolph Street Festival. Anyone here see that show?
There may not be a cure for pain, but Mark's music (Dana's, Billy's and Jerome's in collaboration with him, too) and lyrics are the closest thing to a cure that we have!
I came to know Morphine through a friend giving away CD´s. After a week listening this... and all the other songs from the "Cure for Pain" album, I called my friend and said, " Have you heard this!?
i one got into them a few months ago, and i already can say that i wouldve given just about ANYTHING to be a fly on the wall for this song. miss you mark...

Haha I was gonna like your post only to realize I had already

I will never forgive the music culture and community and industry in general for how criminally underrated this amazing band has always been. 😢

BRILLIANT.
Last of a dying breed... purity & authenticity. Great music remains relevant.

They really do sound every bit as good live as in their recordings. So beautiful and fantastic.
gênios, explêndidos e espetaculares, esse sax é demais e o baixo de 2 cordas perfeita sintonia com a bateria, demais demais demais

God this album is and will forever be the sound of great times.
I only discovered Morphine in 2004, but I had the exact same experience. Couldn't stop listening. Still can't, in fact. Cheers!
I loved Morphine when I 1st saw them @ checkpoint charley in New Orleans
I was at that show!
