Couldn't agree more about the desicion being only the MIP vs the AMOLED. Living in northern Germany, the choice is SO simple. From november to february there is frankly not enough light to make use of the MIP without the automatic backlight. On the battery life of the Epix in AOD: I see significant differences using 3rd party watch faces vs Garmins stock ones: 4 to 7 days more usage with the stock ones! So if you prefer using the AOD , consider switching to the stock stuff when charging options are limited.

Always use standard watch faces from garmin, not only battery life, but downloaded watchfaces used to make the watch slower. And with the oled screen also now battery is a bigger concern. I suppose it comes down to how many widgets the downloaded watchface supports. An yeah, you are depended upon the backlight on MIP displays in winter time :).

If you want better battery life, you should not use with the maximum brightness. Even on my Venu 2 the lowest brightness setting is enough in the most of day time conditions and i get between 7-9 days of battery life.

I don't get the AOD on the epix pro, the screen turns off and then only turns on when you move your wrist? If that's the case, then it isn't 'always-on' right

No, you're not right. The screen doesn't turn off when it's on AOD mode, it just dims itself because it has to. When you gesture it brights up the screen again. All OLED screens have to dim themselves otherwise the pixel burn-in issue is inevitable. I own both Fenix 7X Pro Solar and Venu 2 by the way and used to have nearly all of the Garmin watches with MIP dispay in the past.

Turn AOD on in Garmin Connect. If it is 'off' in settings, using the quick menu on the watch to turn to AOD won't work.
