The FIRST START Was A MESS 1965 Ford F100 EFI Conversion

  • It's time for the first start of my Grandpa's 1965 Ford F-100! In the last few videos we've installed an Edelbrock RPM Performer intake, Holley EFI Sniper 4150 Stealth, Holley EFI Dual Sync Distributor, and all the other goodies to make the perfect driver. We finished up the last few projects thinking it would start right up but it didn't. The switched ignition was cutting out during crank, the oil pump drive fell into the oil pan, timing the Dual Sync was crazy hard, and then the radiator broke... we still got it done and now we're down to simple bolt on fixes to drive it!

I can’t wait to hear how it sounds once the exhaust manifold leak is fixed and the EFI has finished its learning curve. It’ll be strange to hear one of these old engines purring absolutely perfectly, since carb tuning was always a compromise at best, and few people could do it well, if at all.

Sometimes those big projects cause more project. I had a 1989 F150 and it dropped a piston one day. Had a 302. Got a nice motor with low miles, got the old one out, found the flywheel was shot, the clutch was replaced and was in great shape, and the slave cylinder and throwout bearing were shot..had to replace all of that. Then I got it in and running and it had a terrible vacuum leak. So I had to take the intake plenum off and fix that gasket. Then I drove it for a week and the water pump failed. It happens sometimes. I did a lot of driving in that truck after I got it all fixed. You’ll be enjoying it soon.

Welcome to modifying anything or cars in general, one step forward... two steps back. Generally whatever I was working on I had to drive to work so I'd do big stuff over the weekend and try to gather stuff and plan ahead. Luckily we always seemed to have the communal family leftover car that nobody needed as a loaner in emergencies. Ours is a 93 Taurus I hate but if it has gas and a battery it always starts and drives. At least none of your projects have to run by Monday or the next morning so you have time on your side.

Daily driver? Or F.O.R.D. Fix or repair daily. It's a pretty romantic notion you had there to honor your family by restoring your granddaddy's pride and joy, JR. It's just not very practical to expect the F-100 to stand up under daily use given today's expectations and demands put on modern vehicles. I suspect this will require constant coddling from now on.
Making it roadworthy is a helluva accomplishment. You may want to honor his memory by saving it just for family anniversaries and rolling it out for NASCAR race weekends and Fourth of July parades. We saw the spiritual connection you've made with your Granddad. That was pretty special. For sure it is that no one will argue you're both cut from the same cloth.

jiggy chad neuman, no kidding, my grandad bought a 69 Mach 1 mustang new in 69 for his wedding gift, 50yrs later he’s still got his wife & the car, my dad helped restore it about 10yrs ago.
Since then he let me drive it to get breakfast when we are at his house about twice a year. It’s pretty fun. But there’s always something that goes wrong, even after being restored, & it’s just sat in his garage. Only gets about maybe 50-100 miles every 3-5yrs just from when we are up there, it gets started every month to keep the fluids flowing though so that good.
But he doesn’t have Ethonol free gas in it, if there’s anything that’s gonna kill the carb it’s the Ethonol.
I gotta say I just put a new carb on my old JD212 it’s been running fine but it’s started to cough, I’m worried the Ethonol ate the carb.
Since we can get Ethonol free gas now I’ll be putting it in it. F##K the Ethonol.
My dad also just restored an old KX250 & just rebuilt the carb, but used Ethonol gas in it, & almost immediately the carb was full of this weird reddish, gewy, gell sh#t.
After that he had to rebuild it again, & uses Ethonol free gas in it, & I will form now on in my equipment, since it’s getting so bad the carbs don’t last.
My 212 got a freaking $100 carb on it to. Rrrrrrrrg!!!!!!!! After. I’ve had it for 3 yrs now & it ran good but it only ran good for 3-4 months after I got it, since then I’ve been fixing the thing, & finally got it running good, & am starting to enjoy it.
Paid $250 for it, & 3yrs later I’ve got around $500 in it so far, in paint, fuel line, head gasket, carb, tube, drive belt, led head lights, 2nd oil change, soon a tranny fluid change.

      @MattsRageFitGarage Před 4 lety +5

@@michaelbenoit248 Most of those problems with the old cars are from not being driven every day. I grew up driving old carbureted junk and never really had much of anything go wrong, maybe 1 issue per year per vehicle on average and it was almost never fuel system related. The sitting is what kills em. Ran a carb on my truck for 7 years 14,000 miles and it was spotless like new inside when I changed to a smaller carb. Not sure how many hundreds of idle hours were on it on top of those miles, but a lot. My dad had a 87 mazda pickup he bought new and it went until last year before the carburetor ever came apart for a cleaning. Had a lot of dirt inside, no varnish though.

I once worked on a Ford that lost oil pressure. When we dropped the pan we found the oil pump drives perfectly twisted like a piece of licorice. The sludge is most likely from the parafin in the oil, seems to cake up any old motor. My 64 galaxie that says for 30 years had a lot of it caked on the rockers but the lifter valley is spotless (low mileage) I’d suggest using a bit of merc 5 in the oil to clean it out. Be sure to use a zinc additive to protect that flat tappet cam!

That "umbrella" on the oil pump drive shaft, goes in the up position, to keep you from pulling it out when you remove the distributor...

Sounds like an aftermarket cam. Not too aggressive, pretty mild but does not sound stock for the 1965 V8.

That's what you get for not reading the comments, JR! LoL I suggested, nay 'recommended' taking the exhaust manifolds to a machine shop to get the mating surfaces planed. IDK whether you installed 'new manifolds' (I recommended against that as well) but getting the originals planed will correct and prevent warpage and give a better repair. I'm an OG mechanic and familiar with old FORD big block exhaust manifold gasket leakage problems. They are a bitch to change (usually) so anything a guy can do to not have to 'do it over' is always the best remedy. You're doing it over. Take my advice. Or keep doing it over. And over. And over And over and over and ahhh, you get the idea!! LOL

I read all the comments, saw the exhaust comments, came up with a plan to prove them all wrong 😛 the fix is on the way!

Huh, well I guess not much has changed. I'm currently working on my 89 f250 and decided to drop the oil pan to replace a leaky gasket. Realized I need to drop the exhaust, lift the motor almost 3 inches off its mounts, and drop the oil pickup top get the pan out. Thanks Ford.

Ford did not usually use gaskets on the FE exhaust manifolds. You have discovered the reason. Have the mating surface of the manifold machined to make it true and bolt the sucker directly to the head... and use the locking tab washers.

Jr I run diesel oil in my engines and it has additives and conditioners that will flush that out just run for couple hours hard and change oil and filter

Even modern engines with synthetic oils still get sludge. It's just a given with combustion engines.

Don't drive it with an exhaust leak. The O2 sensor will read false leans and you'll end up way rich on your learn. Install looks great!

Holley recommends getting the sniper running before using the dual sync dizzy. Shame about the radiator but it’s still going to be awesome
