- Here's my experience of getting Zappi V2 electric car charger installed. What did I need to consider, how much did it cost, how long did it take, and why I chose this over a Tesla wall connector.

I think a lot of people overestimate the cost of distance. Conduit and clips is about $1/m, cabling is max $10/m even for 6/10mm and on a long straight run it goes up pretty quick.
It's more the labor intensive stuff like trenching, or drilling through walls, or up and down into the roof cavity that adds substantial costs (in time)
I also have a MG ZS EV and a Zappi Charger. I've connected it to Home Assistant, so now my home automation can control the charging. Unfortunately it has to go through the myenergi cloud, so it fails if the internet is down. But at least now I can make the car charge when and how much I want it to charge.
Timely video for me and our new house, thanks Chris
Thanks for the video Chris. I have just purchased a 3 phase Zappi 2 weeks ago, missed your discount code.
I had a Zappi installed two and a bit years ago and it is brilliant. 95% of the time I charge my car from my 15 kW solar panels via the Zappi's Eco+ mode. Occasionally I will use Zappi;s Fast mode to also add charge from my LG Chem house battery if I am heading off somewhere.
I ran the cable (6mm 4 core18m for $134) from my meter box to garage myself (no connection), then just got the sparky to install the charger for $400 cash
Thanks for the very timely video. I
I missed using your referral code, but am getting my Zappi 3 phase installed at the same time as my solar. (Next week hopefully) I have at least a 20m cable run, fuse box is on opposite side to driveway, and was quoted $850 by an independent installer, so will be interesting to see what the eventual extra cost is.
Thanks Chris
Thanks Chris! Hadn't realised Powershop had an EV tariff! 👌
Thanks, Chris. Very helpful. What is the third-party cloud-based solution you mentioned in the video at 2:23?
Its Charge HQ, it gets solar data from your smart meter or inverter, and then simply tells your Tesla at what rate to charge.
Thanks for the video Chris. Just wondering if you have had any issues with the Zappi and charging a MG (specifically a MG4) on Eco+ mode? Apparently some people have experienced that the charger cuts out before fully charging.
I haven't tried the MG4 at home yet - review out soon. But my Zappi has been working well with my MG ZS EV. I'll be sure to try that when I've got it for review.
Thanks Chris I am looking to buy something similar before my Tesla M3 RWD arrives. Unfortunately I have no garage and my hard stand where I park is about 10 metres from my electricity box thats close to the roadway. As I have 3 phase power would I really need a Zappi charger? Couldn't I just have a Sparky put in a 15 or 20 amp power point in the meter box and use a 10 metre charge cable to reach the EV. Is the Zappy ok for outdoor use? Regards from confused.
You probably could do what you suggested. the charging cable will the challenging bit. 22kW capable at 10 metres will set you back a bit of coin, but probably less than a sparky cabling it.
Chris - could you do a video on electricity plans for EV owners, with solar panels, batteries etc?
For sure. I'm considering jumping backing to Amber on their Smart Plan - but plan to do it in late Spring.
Hi Chris, I got a quote to install a Zappi EV charger. The electrician priced for a type B RCD. This is an additional $400. Do you need the type B RCD for the Zappi?
Great video Chris, I've spoken to the company who installed my solar system with a SolarEdge inverter and they have said it's not a great idea to install a Zappi as the SolarEdge EV charger integrates easier with the inverter. Is this just sales talk as the Zappi looks to have really good functionality.
Definitely sales talk. The Zappi doesn't care what your inverter is. It draws power where it's connected to, so for me, not from the battery - and yes from the grid and solar. Your inverter simply transforms DC solar into AC and puts it into your house supply.
@@chrisvanderstockChris, thanks for confirming what I thought was the case.
Thanks Chris. I'm having solar panels installed this month, plus a Zappi charger on our bnb - Snug Haus in Tasmania. It's on the same block as our home, so on the same solar system. There's no garage or carport, so it will be on the outside wall at the parking area. Should I put a little protective roof over it or am I stressing over nothing - will it be fine outside?
It should be fine as they're rated for outdoor use. Many in the UK have them unprotected and I didn't notice faults / issues with rain ingress.
@@chrisvanderstock thank you, that's reassuring!
What are your views on tethered vs untethered versions of the zappi?
If your home situation is constant, with no foreseeable renovations - tethered. Cost of untethered version works out to be the same when you buy a cable that goes with it.
Hi, our house has 3 phase but the car we are getting only charges on single phase. Is it worth while spending the extra money on a 3 phase charger to 'future proof' the installation?
If you do lots of KMs a day and can afford to, I would. But your electrical retailer will most likely charge a higher monthly fee for having three phase power.
How fast can you charge up your car? With 7.2 kW ? 11 kW ? I just wonder how hard it would be to get 22 kW chargingspeed? Zappi would support it! But if your home doesn't have 3 phase powerlines then it would be probably too expensive. Anyway - congratulations for installing a zappi wallbox.
Thanks - yes this is the 7kW version. I looked into 3 phase a few years ago when we were considering induction cook top and heat pump, but the bill was $2,000 just for fuse box upgrade and new lines. Plus they were (and still are!) expensive devices, so delayed that project for another year.
@@chrisvanderstock Hi Chris ,Thanks for the video.Do you have any idea how long it will take to fully charge Tesla Y in single phase 7 K Zappi? Thanks
If you choose zappi, is there any requirement for solar inverter, thanks
Yes still required; it draws off your fuse box back bar - the one that carries all the power to/from your home. Think of the inverter is covering that DC power from the sun into AC, when is then fed to your home, EV, battery, or grid.
How large is your solar system?
4.5 kW - I wish we had more!
@@chrisvanderstock I have an 8.8 kw system that is too small when it is raining. But loves the sun when it is shining.
Solar panels combined with battery storage are a great way to reduce electricity bills for your home and electric vehicle.
Fossil fuels prices will continue to rise. FREE energy from the SUN will be here month after month.
