  • Former Ozzy Osbourne drummer Tommy Aldridge shows you how he played "Crazy Train" live. And it's not what you'd expect!
"If anyone led me up the primrose path, it was Randy Rhoads.”
Tommy is known for many things - playing with Whitesnake, Motörhead, and Yngwie Malmsteen to name a few - but he arguably made some of his biggest impressions backing Ozzy Osbourne in the '80s, joining Ozzy's band for the 1981 Blizzard Of Ozz tour and tracking drums on 1983's Bark At The Moon and several live recordings.
A heavy-hitting rock guru through and through, you can imagine how Tommy translated Ozzy's songs to the stage.

I was fortunate enough to attend a TA clinic in Palm Desert years ago when Tommy had his carbon-fiber kit. It's true: the power we felt coming from him was insane, as we were all only 3 feet away from him playing his solo from the Tribute album! He told us funny stories about having to record 3 different tempos per song for Ozzy. Ozzy would be drawn to whatever tempo fit the type of drugs he was on: if he was on speed, he liked the faster tempo, weed, slower, alcohol, medium. Heheheheh!!

NONE OF IT would have existed without Bob Daisley who even insisted they'd fly in Randy R. and also got Lee Kerslake in The Blizzard of Ozz band (later hijacked into being the Ozzy Osbourne backing band). Lee wrote the drum parts and wrote a whole lot more for the Diary of a madman, including singing melodies. Lee was trained to play the piano too and sang like a frontman, so he had a complete set of skills.

As a young drummer, he absolutely blew my mind. Now that I'm an old drummer, he astounds me even more. My playing style is absolutely reflective of his although I am nowhere near his level of creativity and power. What really strikes me, too, is his humility in this video. The first time I found out about Tommy Aldridge was when a friend played me his solo on the Black Oak Arkansas live album. Later I had the great fortune to see him with Randy Rhoads, Brad Gillis and Jake E Lee, I don't remember ever seeing another drummer live better than him. I saw a lot of bands live in the late 70s and 80s, no one was close to the energy he had and still does to this day. The guy doesn't age!

There's only one lineup I can think of that's as heavily star studded and that's Velvet Revolver featuring Slash, Duff, and Matt from GnR, Scott Weiland of Stone Temple Pilots, and Dave Kushner of Wasted Youth. At least off the top of my head, but I'm sure there's plenty I can't think of lol. HELLYEAH comes to mind, but I think VR still had a more star studded lineup aside from Vinnie Paul and Chad Grey of Pantera and Mudvayne respectively.
