    They did this in New Jersey many years ago when they put a highway (I78) through a wildlife preserve. Now you can see large trees growing on three or four bridges as you drive toward Newark. I like the idea. Everything in LA is built for the automobile, not much for pedestrians and animals.

      @@tonicooper5449 Yes, but the point was, they COULDN'T go where they wanted, they were blocked or killed by traffic. They will find this route soon enough especially the coyotes, the others will follow.

      @@nadagabri5783 Yes, the endangered mountain lions are getting killed by traffic every year, and other animals crossing the freeway; coyotes, deer, etc. can cause serious traffic accidents.

    • @ladywisewolf3942

      I think the coyotes will get the hang of it right away, they are known for being very cleaver and adaptable at finding ways to get to a food source. The mountain lion is a little shyer but will probably follow the coyotes.

      It IS an amusing question: "road signs" for the animals and how will they know, etc. Very sadly, far too many mountain lions have already been killed trying to cross the freeways, BECAUSE they have no good way to do it. Between that & the fact that they CAN'T easily move between localities and other populations for more successful breeding, it's literally, and needlessly, driving them to extinction. The placement of this amazing passage was carefully studied to produce maximum efficiency; in many ways, the wildlife itself has pretty well dictated where this crossing should go. And we've WATCHED and LISTENED! This is a project, and a human moment, we should all be excited about, and proud of bringing to reality!

    In the 50 years my family has lived in Liberty Canyon, I have never seen a single animal on the freeway. A total waste of taxpayer money.

    • @ladywisewolf3942
      @ladywisewolf3942 Před 4 měsíci +1

      That's because many of them were BLOCKED from crossing which limits territory causing problems in breeding/ population and limits food sources leading to starvation. And if you paid attention there is at least a couple of news reports a year of the endangered mountain lions getting killed trying to cross the freeway.

      @@ladywisewolf3942 So they could have created a pre-fab bridge for $100,000 or less that would easily allow the few mtn lions to move. But no they had to build the largest wildlife crossing in the western hemisphere in an area where the actual animal traffic will be nearly nonexistent. Idiotic, wasteful, foolish - This is a clear example of corruption with tens of millions of dollars going to construction groups.

      Yes, not only are the endangered mountain lions getting killed every year, but other animals trying to cross like coyotes and deer can cause serious accidents. But the other problem is that the freeway BLOCKS many animals from getting to food sources and limiting territory which can cause problems in breeding/ population size and starvation.

    The stated purpose of this bridge is to allow the 200 or so mountain lions in the Santa Monica hills breed with animals to the north. First there is no guarantee this will have any beneficial effect. Even if you say this will help 300 animals, that’s a cost of 290,000 per cougar. And that’s not counting the upkeep, repairs and maintenance of the bridge structure. I predict serious problems during heavy rains.
