Magic and Loss is a concept album by Lou Reed, released in 1992. It was his sixteenth album.
Magic and Loss was inspired in part by the illnesses and eventual deaths of two close friends: songwriter Doc Pomus, who had given Reed his start in the music business some 25 years earlier, and a woman Reed identifies as "Rita" - popularly assumed to be Rotten Rita, who along with Reed was a familiar figure at Andy Warhol's Factory in the mid-to-late '60s. Photos of Pomus and a woman's face can be seen at the center of the lyric booklet included with the CD release.
    Lyrics:
When you pass through the fire, you pass through humble
You pass through a maze of self doubt
When you pass through humble, the lights can blind you
Some people never figure that out
You pass through arrogance, you pass through hurt
You pass through an ever present past
And it's best not to wait for luck to save you
Pass through the fire to the light
Pass through the fire to the light
Pass through the fire to the light
It's best not to wait for luck to save you
Pass through the fire to the light
As you pass through the fire, your right hand waving
There are things you have to throw out
That caustic dread inside your head
    Will never help you out
You have to be very strong, 'cause you'll start from zero
    Over and over again
And as the smoke clears there's an all consuming fire
    Lyin' straight ahead
    Lyin' straight ahead
    Lyin' straight ahead
As the smoke clears there's an all consuming fire
    Lyin' straight ahead
They say no one person can do it all
But you want to in your head
But you can't be Shakespeare and you can't be Joyce
    So what is left instead
You're stuck with yourself and a rage that can hurt you
You have to start at the beginning again
And just this moment this wonderful fire
    Started up again
When you pass through humble, when you pass through sickly
When you pass through I'm better than you all
When you pass through anger and self deprecation
And have the strength to acknowledge it all
When the past makes you laugh and you can savor the magic
That let you survive your own war
You find that that fire is passion
And there's a door up ahead not a wall
As you pass through fire as you pass through fire
    Tryin' to remember it's name
When you pass through fire lickin' at your lips
    You cannot remain the same
And if the building's burning move towards that door
But don't put the flames out
There's a bit of magic in everything
And then some loss to even things out
Some loss to even things out
Some loss to even things out
There's a bit of magic in everything
And then some loss to even things out

There will never be another man like him. Ever. And I’m glad to have lived during his music.

Bob Dylan, Townes van zandt, Lou Reed. Some of the greatest poets of the last 50 years. If you couldn't feel yourself in the burning building shedding every bit of yourself...keep listening, we all go thru it.

When I was 21, I met a guy at a houseparty...we talked all night. He introduced me to the Rocky Horror Picture Show, I introduced him to Lou Reed and the VU. It was like that for years...influencing each other again and again. Last month he passed away...diabetes...ketoacidosis. This song was one of the ones he requested for his end of life celebration. My friend to the end, the Andy to my Lou. Rest in Peace, Lorne.

So relived that Lou Reed is the kind of awesome person when it comes to sadness. At first you lose some one which is two or 3 tracks ago from this last track of the album. This track is so much about getting through the pain and sadness and things will get better. The song is quite positive near the end of this song.
    Well done Lou.

This is the first time I've heard this song. I think it's going to be stuck in my head for weeks now and that's okay with me. I love how he says exactly what he wants to say instead of just making words that rhyme, that is so cool. So many musicians Just write lyrics that rhyme these days that don't have any depth or real meaning. I wonder if there's a genre of music or writing style that this aspect is it's main component.

Free-form poetry might be up your alley. I can also recommend listening to poetry readings, spoken word poetry set to music etc. - Lou Reed was in a class of his own of course though, as a rock / street poet crossover act.

    Lou Reed
    quindi cosa resta in alternativa
e allora proprio in quel momento
    muoviti verso quella porta

Yes, pass through the fire and Ice, and even milk and honey of this world, with breathe. Thank you dear Lou for your truth... and thank you dear Eckhart Tolle for your simple life giving wisdom - Each breath we breathe in awareness, sets our mind free to be who we truly are - eternally alive consciousness/love. We are enough. We are enough. We are enough, just as we are. We are enough.

I think the music suits it well, expression wise it sounds like the feeling. The gloomy, kind of emptiness, and the little higher pitch glimmers of hope

      @iconocolor643 Před 3 lety

I don't agree, but that's okay. The music can be just as minimalistic as the deepness of the lyrics can be complex in my opinion. And the jam at the end is great!
