  • The Church's One Foundation. "The Church's One Foundation" is a Christian hymn written in the 1860s by Samuel John Stone. The song was written as a direct response to the schism within the Church of South Africa caused by John William Colenso, first Bishop of Natal, who denounced much of the Bible as fictitious
    Lyrics:Samuel John Stone (1839-1900)
    Music:Samuel Sebastian Wesley (1810-1876)

    I believe I was singing on this recording. What makes this rendition particularly beautiful is the use of the two descants sung quietly and then combined as a double-descant for a forte final verse. They were written by our then Director of Music Dr Richard Marlow, who would have been 80 last week. There are two CDs of hymns with these "double-descants".

    Perfect Harmony.This is one of my favourite Hymn tunes. The descant is very beautiful, I have never heard such perfect music and harmony.

    The Church’s one foundation
    Is Jesus Christ her Lord;
    She is His new creation
    By water and the Word:
    From heav’n He came and sought her
    To be His holy Bride;
    With His own blood He bought her,
    And for her life He died.
    2
    Elect from every nation,
    Yet one o’er all the earth,
    Her charter of salvation,
    One Lord, one faith, one birth;
    One holy Name she blesses,
    Partakes one holy food,
    And to one hope she presses,
    With every grace endued.
    3
    Tho' with a scornful wonder,
    men see her sore oppressed,
    by schisms rent asunder,
    by heresies distressed,
    yet saints their watch are keeping,
    their cry goes up, "How long?"
    And soon the night of weeping
    shall be the morn of song.
    4
    ’Mid toil and tribulation,
    And tumult of her war,
    She waits the consummation
    Of peace for evermore;
    Till, with the vision glorious,
    Her longing eyes are blest,
    And the great Church victorious
    Shall be the Church at rest.
    5
    Yet she on earth hath union
    With God the Three in One,
    And mystic sweet communion
    With those whose rest is won:
    O happy ones and holy!
    Lord, give us grace that we,
    Like them, the meek and lowly,
    In love may dwell with Thee.

      Awesome...reminds me of past precious years, when the church earnestly contend for the FAITH once delivered unto the saints.
      So sad you now have clergies and lay reader's with divergent views, some even supporting same sex marriages, abortions, transgender and other vices once considered abhorrent to the church!.

    Love that this arrangement includes the Acapella verses. There's something about human voices singing in harmony without accompaniment that elevates the meaning of this song.
