- A Short film about making Bokashi--a fermented wheat bran--used to pickle kitchen food waste to help it compost quicker without foul odors. You can purchase ready-made Bokashi from wigglywigglers.co.uk
- Jak na to + styl
Bokashi bran is made with 1:1:40 . 60ml of EM1 (not activated) with 60 ml of melasse and 2,5 liter of water +1 tablespoon of salt no refine for 10 lbs of wheat bran. T° = 100° F.
Just to clarify: This is not the same recipe as reffered to in the video.
In the video the ratio is 1:1:100 = 30ml EM, 30ml Sugar molasses, 3L water, 10lbs of wheat bran.
Looks great! I need some for my apartment porch compost because I need it to break down faster with less odor.
Such a great informative video! Just getting into bokashi, can't wait to try making some.
Looks and sounds like you live in paradise!
Is it not bad for the microbes that you add them to very hot water?
i'm digging your videos, more please. Thanks.
Thank you for helping me to make my homemade exquisite Bokashi Bran. Am teaching the Bokashi method at local health food stores. Is the ceramic powder like volcanic ash?
Great video thanks for all that great info. I had no idea you could use to feed livestock or add to black water systems. Just got yourself a new subscriber
+Fernando Villalpando Hello,do u know name of intro song maybe ?.
TheSRBgamer63 no sorry
Yes, another request for showing how to make the starter culture, please!!
So you showed us how you do it but didn't give us details on how to make the effective microbes and what the hell is ceramic powder and where do you get it?
+NotoriousNUGS it's just imo/lacto, wheat bran, and some brown sugar. mix it with water and ferment for a month. google that shit.. you can make your own lacto and imo.
Can be soft rock powder
Glacial rock dust or Azomite work just fine, I also add Biochar. You can take this a step further and learn to collect your own microbes from your yard and surrounding area. Check out Korean Natural Farming and JMS/ Jadam Long live the Natural Farmer
@@chuckholden5448 BOOM
youtube "chris trump LAB" or "chris trump IMO"
Ditto, you just saved me typing the same thing..a video on making the EM would be much appreciated
How do you create the “ effective microbes” is the question that remains after watching this. Unless you explain how that is done, most watchers including myself are still puzzled.
do i need to dry out the bran for using in my bokashi bucket or do i use it damp??
Does this have to dry out before it’s finished for use ?
yes, please show how to make em!
I keep hearing about how compost smells. Obviously, if it smells, you are not burying scraps. My compost bin never smells because the scraps are buried. I save up scraps till I have a couple pounds that I first freeze, then bury them into the center of the compost pile. It never smells or attracts rodents...and I live by a wooded area where wildlife is very prevalent.
I've finally added instructions at the above website.
Thanks.
How about add sea salt ? Pls ! I like to know about that. Thank.
What a brilliant idea am definitley going to get myself a Bokashi Bucket. Please tellus how to make the Activated Effective Microbe.
Thanks for the brilliant ideas
+Podchef if i will not use molasses, what other alternative will i use?
In my city, there is no wheat /rice brans. Is saw (wood) dust ok as a substitute?
thanks for posting this. a vendor list for the ceramic particles would be helpful.
i would think that it would be smart to wear a superfine particle mask as you add the ceramic particles and to continue to wear it until you have finished adding and mixing in the liquid. It can't be healthy to breath in ceramic particles!
cool vid!
I'm hopeful that you'll do an EM brewing video soon. Keep 'em coming, please!
Hi after 16 years :)
Where do you live? It looks amazing.
Hi. I made some Bokashi a couple of weeks ago using ratios similar to yours. I read somewhere that it's ready when there's a layer of white mycelium on the surface. So far, it hasn't appeared. Is this feature essential in order for Bokashi to be "ready"? Also, you don't mention a drying step. Is it essential?
that is so cool!!!!!!!!!!!!
What if you don't have 17lbs of bran and want to make a much smaller amount? Where do you get the other ingredients from? It was such a small amount for that amount of bran do you still need it when mixing smaller amounts? The feed store in my area doesn't carry wheat bran ...
When drying Bokashi Bran should it be done out of sunlight?
yes you would use activated EM not em-1. However, you would not use it directly on the soil(I mean you could but it would get expensive). You would instead use the activated EM as the EM solution which Podchef adds to the water along with the molasses, which he then adds to the bran and allows to ferment.
Thanks for the Video. What was name of the Intro Music?
Looking for his Bakashi Compost Activator recipe made with kelp. Anyone have this?
how does one find ceramic powder? what is the result of not including the ceramic powder?
Gypsum is a mineral that is good for fungi.....I am assuming it is good for these bacteria as well. Otherwise clay powder is a ceramic powder.
just use sea water or azomite/rock dust
@khalil103084
LOL!
When you extend your expensive EM with water and molasses or add the activated EM to expensive bran, do you do so in a laboratory environment???
Peace!!
thank you!!!
Cost update - a 40# bag of pelletized rice bran cost me $27 in a rural area of North Georgia. Wheat bran was much cheaper at $15.75 for 50#.
Where does one get Ceramic powder?
Thanks for sharing, but a few points are vague. What is the ceramic powder? what is the microbial inoculant? is that EM or just a compost tea? also, the way you are projecting your voice, from the back of your throat, instead of from your diaphragm, is whats making your throat hurt, i think.
The ceramic powder is EM-X
I tied my bran off tightly in a big trash bag after mixing it. After a week it is producing gas and the bag is inflating quite a bit. Is this normal? Should I get rid of the gas?
I Wonder if effective microorganisms survived the shock of being dumped from a small glass into 3 litres of very hot water (120°F) =/
EM species have a tolerance of over 140F. no issue here.
And what about UV radiation?
Rafael Collado you should know compost piles get that temperature range, and some soil piles also..
Rafael Collado bacteria is tough. there's a reason why they're the oldest organism on earth.
@@polaroidsofpolarbears365 thank you for being smart!
Thanks ... where do I get the "EM" from?
What is powdered ceramic and where can one get it??
How i can buy comoost bucket sistem?
can i ferment pigweed to kill the seeds before adding to my compost?
+Cheeto Fingers I researched that myself. When you try to compost weeds roots and seeds in regular composting it will grow back, but from what I found is that fermenting will make sure that doesnt happen. They even say to kill off poison ivy just put finished bokashi straight on it and cover with black plastic. For this reason you have to let bokashi "finish" in dirt before you plant. And spraying just the diluted EM liquid on all your regular compost and covering it will also help break it down and introduce good microbes etc. Hope that helps, this is such a learning curve and hard to keep up with new info!
Where can I buy cheap wheat bran? $17 dollars for 50 pounds?
I know it's a weird question but, why do all these videos have to put measurements in milliliters? Why can't we use the measurements we're used to?
Can bokashi bran be multiplied to other quantities?
So you just buy a bit of EM solution to innoculate your bran?
You should also check out Bryan McGrath's youtube videos as he offers ways to make EM without purchasing EM-1
how to make the innoculant? i guess we can just use EM-4?
czcams.com/video/N_nRFjSfIy4/video.html
This video teach us how to make EM1 use water rice.
aloha!! there were a few things i thought would b good to add to the Bokashi prep demo.EX: emphasis on fermentation enviroment,(anarobic, aerobic) uses etc. ....the ceramic em is not required for a great high quality Bokashi> thanks for doing the good works! S
Is your em1 already activated?
I found a smaller recipe, not tried it tho, but its 500g wheat bran, 250ml water, 1tbs molasses, 1 tsp EM...am not sure so much water is necessary, maybe just add a little at a time until its similar consistency to the batch in the video
Can we use rice bran sir
Where did you find 50 pounds of bran for 20 bucks.
How do you ferment the EM with kelp etc?
you ferment EM 1 with molasses, and add some kelp powder....EM is very forgiving, you can just experiment with it
We make EM1 serum here with water rice, brown sugar or molasses and fresh milk.
thanks
Will it work with sawdust? I cannot work with wheat. ( celiac)
Seen people using sawdust and even newspapers. Maybe do another search for it, it's worth it.
I wonder wether it will work with water kefir drink instead of EM
One can always try.... :) Not quite the same microorganisms, but who knows?
You can buy Em-1 which is used to make the activated EM from teraganix dot
com. It also says how to activate it on the site....as for Podchef's own recipe with fish emulsion, I don't know..but there are many recipes that will work..even plan activated EM will do the job.
In the video the ratio is 1:1:100 = 30ml EM, 30ml Sugar molasses, 3L water, 10lbs of wheat bran.
(which is about 17Liters for those who are using metric scale. )
So true....!!!!!!!!!!!!
what did we do before plastic and what are we going to do after!? lol
12 years , wow
but you lose carbon nitrogen and sulfur due to gassification from the anaerobic process -- anyone know how much?
can i use already active em's, instead of em1 for the job?
if yes, can i enrich the soil direct with this?
Yes, on the first. But I guess that you figured that out by yourself by now :)
i'll add my voice to those requesting a video on how to make the starter culture please.
EM-1 is actually trademarked but it's as simple as rice, milk and water.
How do I know that fermentation is terminated?
Usually the bokashi takes from four to eight weeks and usually the temperature goes down and humidity is low
why the steaming water, doesnt it kill off the bacteria?
Hot water helps thick molasses incorporate with water. I’d just let it cool a bit before adding activated EM-1. Get a cup of coffee, get the mail, sweep something, throw in a load of laundry, water a plant… just sit & enjoy the garden. Water will cool quickly enough. Or mix molasses water earlier in the day. So many options 😂
Where do you buy your wheat bran of 50 lbs of Weat Bran for $17.00?
Could I know you formula in Details?
Buy the wheat bran at your local feed and seed store. It is often feed to horses and other livestock.
What is the name of intro song :)?
hm .. had to add 2 space to link to get it to post
Is there another alternative to ceramic powder?
music is way too loud in contrast to the audio in the video, i had to turn my sound way down at the credits.
@johndela1
"We conclude from our results that ‘Effective microorganisms’ did not improve yields and soil quality during 4 years of application in this field experiment under the temperate climatic conditions of Central Europe."
Mayer J, Scheid S, Widmer F, Fließbach A, Oberholzer H. How effective are 'Effective microorganisms® (EM)'? Results from a field study in temperate climate. Applied Soil Ecology. 2010;46(2):230-239
@5:07 He gets philosophical about not cleaning up his shit
not allowed to post a link .. but did google search for : make Bokashi .. found bokashi cycle .com .. hope that helps ....
I think it's crushed terra cotta
I think it's just compost tea made with compost, kelp, molasses, fish emulsion (?), etc...
ladyfelina,
Please see my reply to "mysunshine's question above. You had the same question.
You lost me when you claimed that ceramic powder "absorbs and radiates infrared energy that helps the microbes"
And in composting toilets
+amdg+ wheat bran! who knew? and I thought it only tasted good sprinkled on my ice cream ... +pax Christi!+
Y
this is the same as making Kombucha
not quite, ahem
i don't get it you want to show us how to do one thing but you go and add something else to the mix and not tell us how you did the second mix you added to it 247 thumbs up for half a recipe another thing that makes no sense
Isn't the hot water kills the bacteria of the EM?
+Napoleon Tsogas no.... of course you're not gonna add BOILING water. hot/room temp water is fine.
Compost piles get to high 110 and 120 i believe, same environment factors.. one thing is the uv from the sun, soil bacterias typically die in sun, thrive in dark soil..
well that clered that up
that should be plain activated EM, not plan
@khalil103084
That's akin to saying that you can't safely make yogurt, kefir, sourdough, sauerkraut or wine, etc., at home!!! It's simply not true that it needs to be cultured in a laboratory.
Humans have been making beneficial bacteria starters at home for thousands of years!!!!!!
Thanks you!!!!
I guess he never made the video about the microbial innoculant...
I think the most you can conclude from this study is what the experimenters concluded: adding EM "in the medium-term (4 years), did not show an influence on soil quality in agriculture under the climatic conditions of central Europe."
This conclusion hardly supports your claim that EM or Bokashi is bullshit. All you can claim is that EM didn't work under those climate conditions in Central Europe. Might work elsewhere just fine or simply be too soon to tell without further science debunking it
what the fuck is a "ceramic powder that attracts and radiates infra-red energy" ?
EM-multi-SHOP
"A ceramic powder"? - trade secret?
+Sandeep Karun I found it on the TeraGanix website
you can buy em ceramic powder from any EM store in most countries
Aren't you killing the beneficial bacteria with hot water?
google: far-infrared ceramic powder.
well this video was useless unless you know what he's talking about regarding the rest of the ingredients and how to make them or where to buy them. That didn't teach you anything other how to mix everything together. More details? most would say add this ingredients this is what it is or this is where you can find this.
This would otherwise be great, but is pretty useless without knowing how to make the microbe mixture.
