From 1999 performance at Memphis' Cooper-Young Festival. With Ron Easley - bass & background vocals, and Richard Dworkin - drums. video by David Julian Leonard.
I discovered Alex too late, We were both born and raised in the Big M, he in ‘50, me in ‘60. I remember about age 16 going through a friends extensive album collection and pulling out Big Star’s #1 Record and asking about it, and friend said it was a great album, local band, but first you gotta hear this, and he put on a Rush album. I never heard Big Star until the CZcams age. At least there are performances preserved here for the ages. I’m blown away by his guitar playing. Is he technically brilliant? No, but as John Auer said, he’s eclectically brilliant. When you hear a few bars of Chilton on that old Gibson, you know exactly who you’re listening to. Damn. It’s 2020 and he’s 10 years gone. I envy anyone who ever got to see him live.
I saw him when he toured Australia I think with this line up. The crowd only wanted to hear Big Star tunes...I think he went over my head a bit, he mainly played covers...but now I get it! He was an incredible artist, and what a voice...
@ArthurKuntsler, good stuff. If you were into the SF club circuit, did you ever catch the North Mississippi Allstars? Another Memphis area band. They’ve got a 2014 show from The Independent that looked like a lot of fun.
Well...live performances most definitely were. It;'s so stupid on every level. First of all, you'll never watch the shitty recording, and FOR SURE no one else wants to see it. And- most egregiously, you've fucking missed a once in a lifetime experience by worrying about your phone instead of being in the moment.
I mean they allow us to see essentially what you're clearly enjoying watching here on CZcams. How is whatever this was filmed on any different than a phone?
@@austin78993 i think in this instance the difference is there's one camera man, off to the side of the stage. with phones, it's not uncommon to see dozens of people in the audience holding their phone up during a show. i can acknowledge all the positive benefits that smartphones have brought to my life, and others'. but when i see footage from the time before phones, i feel a bit of nostalgia. life just seemed a bit less cluttered if you know what i mean.
Elvis Presley, Jimmy Page, David Bowie, Bo Diddley, Syd Barrett, Paul Westerberg, Chris Bell....Alex Chilton, all Capricorns. They make great rockn'rollers!
Wow, this is a cover of an R&B one-hit-wonder named Danny Pearson from 1978. I lived a couple blocks away from an R&B radio station that used to play this.
Alex was a GREAT guitarist. Tav Falco still tours, and he's very much similar to Alex. The biggest diff is Tav doesn't play a mean guitar like Alex did.
Haha man I know right he’s was an all around guy you could put him anywhere bass drums didn’t matter, hey if you like this check out my band soul dwellers were on all platforms, id really appreciate it
Saw Big Star perform on a flatbed trailer parked in left field of Southwestern University ( now Rhodes College) . The music was great the day was beautiful but I had no idea I was in the presence of greatness>
Have loved every one of these you shot from this show…any chance you got the whole thing? I was lucky enough to catch Alex solo 3 times and saw Big Star in 99ish at First Avenue. Either way, thanks for sharing these
@@dannymoulton4829 Please. If Alex Chilton were alive he'd tell you how cheesy this song is. It's Corny as fuck but that's what makes it so Chilton and so great. He recorded a lot of songs with tongue firmly planted in cheek. I think that's what the poster meant.
Why is this like the best song ever
Alex Chilton was a career troll decades before it was fashionable.... loved this guy.
These r&b/soul covers by an older, wiser Alex (with big help from Ron and Richard!) are so, so precious - I could listen to his falsetto all day long
This is outstanding. The audio quality is worthy of a commercial release. The band is in great form, and Alex is at his best. Thanks for this!

Born and raised in Memphis also I knew Big Star and all of the great artists from that city..Alex,s story is just plain sad what a great musician

Saw him in SF a bunch of times in the 90s/00s. Lots of pretty impressive boots floating around.

Life was better without cell phones.

@@austin78993 It's more to do with the level of engagement between the audience and the performer. Never mind.

@@Spectrescup The first rock star....
One thing I always remember, is that among being an innovator, songwriter, singer, Chilton was a great guitar player!!
and an underappreciated one at that. his melodies were great! can't believe this is a 3 piece.
Carl Wilson gave him a few tips in the 60's.
wow. that's why Alex Chilton is famous. I love this song.
Master class..Alex made it look so effortless.
Such a great song off 'A Man called Destruction' album, I think. No one plays guitar like Alex Chilton. So much character!
Alex has the best smile

Genius. And who could tell? So easy he is. This and he touch and move me.
本当に素晴らしく素敵です。
The quality of this performance is wonderful! What a fun song too.
I love Alex Chilton ! ❤️
1:34 and 2:33 ... it's a like a mini-coffee break for them during Richard's fill. Ron fixing his glasses. Awesome.
this sounds like a half baked Pavement song. I love it!
That's some fine guitar playing, i kept waiting for the cameraman to show the second guitarist. Turns out there's none
Alex was a GREAT guitarist.

Alex Chilton is his own 1st, 2nd and third guitarist.
Yes he was much more than a Box Top!
Alex was a star!

Thank you! Great footage. I miss him so much.

Alex come back!!! bella voz y que manera de pararse y llamar la atencion
It's a ridiculous song, but Alex's voice and guitar make it so pleasurable.
Right. This version was better then when he sang the white pages
Let's see......Alex likes it but YOU thinks it's ridiculous? I'll go with Alex when it comes to musical taste.
