Great version of this Johnny "Guitar" Watson song performed at Memphis' Cooper-Young Festival in 1999. Alex Chilton - guitar & vocals, Ron Easley - bass, Richard Dworkin - drums. D.J. Leonard - camera.
what an absolutely effortless, intuitive, natural musician Alex Chilton was - one of the greatest of all time and yet so little known during his lifetime.
I never heard this song until next week. I'm a fan of Alex and Big Star, but this performance is pure magic. He's an amazing guitarist and soulful singer. thanks for posting !
This was, apparently, posted 10 years after his passing. Thank you, thank you, thank you. I had the good fortune to see him at a small place (starry plough, berkeley) around ‘96. It was a revelation (and i’d seen him once already: ibeam, sf, 80s) ❤
I was there! He played a great cover of Michael Jackson's Rock With You that day. Does anyone know what the exact date of this show was in 1999? I know it was in September at the Cooper Young Fest, but would love to know the specific date of that show. Thx
Incredible song & version. If anybody can figure out the exact chords, or put up a tutorial, I'd love to know. As far as I can figiture out it's in Db with and works with a lot of Major 7ths, but I can't figure out the whole thing out. Thnx

Alex really knew how to rock it on guitar, very underrated player.
I was there, great pre Covid times when Chilton was alive. RIP
Great camerawork especially zooming in on Alex's fretwork on that gorgeous ES-255. Fantastic performer, gone too soon.
This is fantastic - Alex, the human jukebox, rocking the house yet again.

God's singer. This is just magnificent all round.
Love his pure, confident execution. Cheers!
This is a #1 song

Oh my...I' going to be watching this many more times.
I know, right?! Such a turn on!
@@daisyglaze1817 lol...not exactly my take on it, but he is an impressive man, no doubt.
@@567dirt8910 😂 whoops. Well, it's my take on it 😏
Same here!
Nice. From his best solo album. As with all of his music it will maybe take 20 years or more for people to notice, good job he was relaxed about it.
Just great... Ray Davies turned me on to Alex, and I'm glad he did ;)
So great that they became friends long after Big Star did a Kinks song
Nice! Such a great voice!❤️❤️❤️
Thank you very much for posting this.
Brillante
The tone comin off that Gibson...NO ONE sounds like that. What Alex does is use space as an embellishment.

Maravilloso
Thanks for posting
Thank you for sharing Alex’s talent with us. Is this filmed at the Cooper Young District of Memphis? Thanks for being there.
These videos are shot so well, are there anymore from this show that will be uploaded later?
Thanks David.
😲 😏 I need a cigarette 😏

His fingers picking and strumming on the guitar - can imagine him strumming and stroking something else....
Thanks David.
