It was a conscious decision not to recast Jim Davis, mainly because he WAS Jock Ewing; they ran into the same trouble when Barbara Bel Geddes left the show because of her heart problems. Donna Reed had a good run, but she wasn't BBG, and when Barbara was well enough that she decided to return, the producers jumped at it. I loved how Miss Ellie's role just got that much bigger when she had to become the head of the family; too bad BBG's health wouldn't let her keep up with that pace.
I always liked this version better than 'season 2' - it seemed to be more upbeat, especially as you hit that point where the Dallas name came up and the music really hits the main dallas theme.
Save us the woman’s lib garbage. She was replaced because they needed the character and the actress didn’t DIE. They needed the Jock character too, but out of respect for the actor, who died, they didn’t replace him.
Season 3 was my favorite. Reflective of the era, it's like the disco version of the Dallas theme.
