I believe the "peculiar clicking sound" is the sound from consecutively bouncing on enemies being pitched higher and higher. If you pay attention when you start comboing enemies, you'll notice that sound gets pitched higher and higher; because you comboed so much from glitching the combo counter, the pitched noise becomes distorted into that click like noise.
No
@@1CT1 Keep your personal religious views away from content that doesn't ask for it or require it dude.
You now it's funny, I actually never noticed you primarily did playstation speed games. It just made sense the Jak speed runner played ratchet and the rest just never clicked.
i never heard of that kid

It's always cool when the speedrunning history/analysis is done by a key runner
I don't mind much either way, but when you're removed from a situation you tend to be able to look at things more objectively(?) Though, I guess being directly involved in the scene will give you a unique perspective and more familiarity with the history.
that’s exactly why i’ve watched averagetrey’s SMS history videos about 5000 times
@@Mon-Ki you can also be misinterpreting things, it's better to ask the explanation of the glitch discoverer/executer
@@Mon-Ki on simpler skips it may be the case, I have seen many skips found by relatively new players, but as the game has become more complex it is less common
If you want more, try out AKheon's God of War speedrunning history video.
i believe the 'clicking sound' is probably the bounce sound effect being played at an incredibly high pitch/speed, as it gets higher and higher pitched the more you bounce on enemies/bounce boxes in a successive combo. you can see this effect easily in crash dash's bonus round with the crate bridge for example, as by the time you finish getting all those boxes the bounce sound effect is pretty high pitched
Well observed
I absolutely love watching these semi-detached history videos and then suddenly having the host go "so this is what I did". Getting that personal perspective from speedrunning is really special.
How did Crash fit all those crystals inside him
Hello checkmark
WHOA!
yo the meme man is into speed-running cool
One. At. A. Time.
Never thought I would see you here
Thank you for filling the Playstation hole in what looks like the "all nintendo speed doc" side of youtube, all we need now is a World record progression on Crash Team Racing, if any Crash game has rich speedruning history, it's CTR dating all the way back to 2001 (or for full game runs I want to say 2010 since that's the earliest run I could find of it)
CTR is soooo tricky lmaoo!! I'm like 69% through
Check Niikasd channel, he has a couple of videos analyzing WR progressions in certain tracks.
Would the history of CTR WRs just be an interview with hypnoshark?
I love these speedrun "documentaries" I suck at speedruning and I couldn't care less about getting better as it's not my thing xD but I love watching it.
I'm with ya. This stuff is so cool
Same! I'll never speedrun a game, think the activity is asinine, but I watch just about every speedrunning content I can find. I can't explain it...
@@gnardawgyt same. as a general rule i think most people love watching other people do things really well. everyone loves seeing someone do whatever is they do to the absolute highest level even if it seems mostly pointless - i guess it's why people watch olympics and are interested in world records etc.
I don’t really watch speedruns but I find the mechanics being bent and broken behind the scenes so interesting.
I love just breaking games from my childhood with speed running tricks.
Always a good day when ThaRixer posts.
Amen
I'd like to assume that the explanation for getting crystals on the combo counter could actually be the opposite of yours, unless folk have already reverse-engineered it. As in, it's an item index in the game's code that they use in the combo counter mechanic. Crystals, gems and upgrades are naturally stored there, and combo counter wompa fruit rewards end up being "separate items" you get from the index.
The fact the combo counter doesn't get reset with the spin > crouch ritual is also quite interesting from a developer's standpoint. It means only Crash's default idle/walking states - the only states that Crash 2 shares with Crash 1 where the mechanic was first implemented (aside from spinning, though many other invulnerability/state delay exploits are tied to it) - reset the combo counter. When adding the new crouch state, Naughty Dog simply orgot to make it reset the combo counter as other states do, which is a neat little oversight.
Lol I remember doing this as a kid wondering who would spend all the time to figure something like this out. Glad to know who it was all these years later. My childhood self thanks you. I was probably 10 years old when I first saw your run.
Edit: I know you didn't figure it out yourself necessarily but my point still stands
I just wanted to say that I found your channel by a video called "The man who broke Ratchet in half" and your videos are very interesting. I'm always interested in videos like that. Like how some game mechanics work and how players use them for their advantage in speedrunning etc. Your commentary is very relaxed and very informative. Thank you for your videos and take care!
Thanks my man!
LMAO the Slim scene really got me
Love these videos, it's seems so rare comparably that a speedrunning channel covers people playing Sony's OG IP's like Crash, R&C, Jak trilogy, Sly cooper, ect. Compared to how many videos cover Nintendo game series speedrunning.

Amazing. Simply amazing. And your taste for PSX OST's in the background is really something rare (WE2000/ISS2 music...)

When the speed runner makes himself known to the masses on a causal video it’s always a surprise, but a welcome one for sure.
Not gonna lie, I like these "speedrun analysis videos" not for the speedrun themselves, but because I LOVE seeing glitches being explained.
It's so freaking interesting.
Same, buggy games are my passion, just like it says on the book "same things make us laugh, make us cry"
It's funny. In modern indie game development any target platform has enough memory that you never need to even consider saving resources with something like sharing one list between bounce combo rewards and item pickups. It's an awkward design so I can't think of any other reason to do this than some memory optimization. Though it might be just an old-school way of modelling stuff - put various kinds of shit in huge arrays and play with indexes.
A big portion of old games' glitches come from manipulating some index to point to the wrong thing, and these kind of glitches are really fun because of how "mechanical" they are. Modern type safe coding practically renders bugs like this nonexistent :/
Yeah! It's why the original Pokemon has some of the most fascinating glitches. Among these, Missingno is the most famous, but my personal favourite is the Mew glitch.
Honestly the fact that you use the Ape Escape soundtrack makes me so happy! Genuinely one of my favourite YT's when it comes to speed running!
I remember finding your channel during the Ratchet 1 NG plus days, and the content you make now is amazing, It is such a joy watching creators grow the way you have
Weird that this channel only has 71k subs. It's literally one of the best channels when it comes to speedrunning. I hope Rixer gets the recognition he deserves in 2022.
All of these videos are fascinating. I have never looked into any of these speedgames other than RaC, but you still book me for the entire video. Massive props and I hope you can move out soon.
You just made me love the original Naughty Dog developers even more. These games are so cleverly designed to make the most out of the specs.
Homie I could watch you talk about just about anything. So glad I subscribed when you started all those years ago. It’s been awesome watching you grow to release such well thought out and produced stuff. You are killing it!
Dude, your videos are so great. Speedrun is something I always was interested in, not only are your videos extremely well done, but the fact that you are a speedrunner and a lot of the time talk about runs you've done/followed when it was made, makes the videos much more enjoyable.
And the fact that you don't make videos on the same oversaturated games ( like minecraft and super mario 64) like a lot of other people, just put you above the test
"You're never really meant to go backwards in most of the Crash games."
... incorrect. There are too many levels where you have to backtrack to get all the crates. The Pits is one of 'em.
That'll be why he said most and not all then
@@diddlenfiddle7311 But that's still not true, speaking strictly. Crash 2 has The Pits, Crash 3 has whichever dinosaur level it is that has the Yellow Gem platform. That's half of the first four.
@@ThatguycalledJoe The point is that the camera is designed solely for going forward. The devs just play with that limitation in case of optional challenges, like finding all the crates.
He's still right though, the levels were really not meant to be played backwards in the first place.
Its so awesome youve been doing this since you were 15 its cool to see someone really passionate about stuff talk about their own experiences with speedrunning
Lmao at the MC Ride snippet at the very end, great video as always mayne!
knew about this but not in this much detail, great content.
i used to do a new game with all powerups in Crash 3 by holding triangle at the beginning of the 3rd demo on the start screen, then quitting the coco plane level and finding yourself in an uncleared warp room BUT with all powers equipped (PAL version, don't know if NTSC will work).
Earned my sub! Love the way you format these. Especially for games that I used to play that I never even thought about the fact that they could just be broken like this. 😂😂 Can't wait to see what's next 🙏
Iv been waiting so long for a video like this! thank you for breaking it down!!
This “Well, it’s me” guy is a good speed runner. Thanks for the coverage, ThaRixer
I'm so out of the loop on Crash I didn't even know about this, great stuff rix 👏
I’ve obviously known about the crash 2 any% run for yeeeeears, but never actually looked into how the glitch worked. Actually pretty fascinating haha.
Another excellent video as always my man
"I'm bouncing!"
Oh the confidence of that still makes me smile.
Can't get enough of your content, Ricky, it's too daaamn good!!!! Also, guys, Nina's Tekken 3 theme is the grooviest of all Tekkens. Prove me wrong!
@@1CT1 Amen, brother
You always pick such unexpected and interesting things to cover in these videos. I'm really glad that I found your channel from your RAC documentary about silence!
Love your videos man, I started trying to glitch hunt on Jak 2 after watching your stuff. Whenever you upload your stuff is like an immediate click.
Congrats on the sponsor, Ricky! Glad to see this channel growing, you deserve it.
Love your videos bro.
Gives me so much nostalgia.
Also blows my mind that I never knew my favorite childhood games (crash and R&C) had such game breaking speed running glitches like this.
Nor did I know there was such a speedrun following for these games😅
Keep up the good shit bro
I watched a speedrun of ACiT... it was eye opening to see my childhoot beat in 40 minutes
Let’s go MrBean that’s how I knew about this glitch. His 100% Speedrun with commentary was so fun to watch and learn from. Neutral Slide Spin looks so cool.
That video alone got me into speedrunning. So good.
2:01 - I just love when game music comes up, and I instantly recognize it.
Ape Escape - TV Tower.
Never been a speedruner myself but seeing all the interesting ways you can break some of my favorite old games is really cool
Still crazy to me how I rediscovered your channel by looking for your old Sly Let's Plays. Let’s go!
i have been speed running your videos, love the content. most of the games you cover, i was renting them over and over as a kid.
Great vid. Enjoyed the explanation!
Btw was that ISS Pro Evolution 2 Edit Mode music at the end ? Banger! 😜
I absolutely adore channels like yours because 1) I'm obsessed with Crash Bandicoot and PS1 games and 2) I do not have the patience to play them myself (LMAO) to find all these cool tricks.
So thank you for investing so much of your time and effort (and most likely your hard earned money) to do this and make such cool content! Just subbed.
Awesome vid. Wouldn't mind learning more about Crash SRing
I watched that C2 Speedrun long ago and actually attempt it, but all that was forgotten... Thanks for the good memories
This is one of the most unique speedrun tricks I have ever seen! Sick video man!
The item glitch thing started sounding familiar, and then you brought up mrbean3500vr, and I was like "THATS WHERE I REMEMBER THIS!"
Still, I had no idea how this worked in Crash 3 and Crash 1. Very informative!
Wow I remember talking about this glitch way back in 2005-2006 on the original Crash Mania forums.
I've never really watched speed running videos but for some reason I love this channel.
Awesome Video, awesome Backround Music.
After all your Vids i finally subbed. Thanks for your work!
You just don't miss with these banger videos bro keep up the great work.
Brilliant video! I just wonder how did you take those pictures / recordings of empty levels? Perfect for a desktop photo of your computer! 😍😍😍
Insta liked, your content is so smoothing and relaxing
Always a delight to see a new video by you Ricky! Keep up the great work
I was waiting for a video on this one, great stuff!
Hope you keep this up man don't really care about watching speedruns but man the history and lore is so interesting especially from someone who's really invested hope you keep doing this
0:08 nah, nobody forgets about those boxes, the question mark box is the most iconic
This is like the shit that kids on the playground would say. "My cousin got a crystal by doing 200 jumps on a box."
Then everyone calls him a liar but....at night you wonder...
Happy birthday! Love the video! Crash is so nostalgic for me!
I LOVE learning new things about crash that i didn't know about before
if i recall, in crash 3 if you obtain enough glitched crystals it unlocks the entrance to hot coco in warproom 6
Glad you found a sponsor so you can keep doing these video's! I'll be enjoying the video now :)
Before video: How are jump boxes broken?
After video: Yeah, they're broken AF.
Using Nina’s theme at 4:16 is amazing. Love tekken 3’s OST!
The clicking sound is just an extremely high pitch bounce sound. Each time you bounce on an enemy or bouncy wumpa boxes it plays a sound effect that get higher in pitch with each consecutive bounce.
that one second DG clip at the end was a nice touch
Content like this is so fascinating to me
Great video, love the Ape Escape music as well!
Top quality content Pog always nice to see a new video from you. You are REALY crushing it latly
Never stop doing these. you upload nothing but bangers
I remember using this trick to get some of the trickier gems in Crash 2 but didn't know you could prolong the bounce chain like this. Very interesting!
Hm, this game looks pretty cool
Yeah, it's great
Yeah some of those levels make me feel chilly
Great video! Now all I have to do is eagerly await the next. Keep up the great content
Daaamn! That Winning Eleven theme brought back SO MUCH MEMORIES!
I just gotta say how I love the title of this video
Normally, Crash Bandicoot breaks these boxes
This time, These boxes break Crash Bandicoot
Great video as always, though if I have one minor nitpick, it felt like you should have emphasized a bit more how important it was that the penguins were infinitely respawning. The idea that having a limited number of enemies would make the trick more finicky isn't mentioned until the Crash 3 section, but it made for some awkward pacing; plus, I assume that's the reason you have to do the trick in level 2 instead of level 1, but that's never stated.
very good video, thoroughly enjoyed it :)
6:22 I can hear Hurricos theme, from Spyro 2. 😍
2:55 Okay, that was smooth
I died laughing from Slim voice xD You're too good. Love your videos and glad you are making more 🥰🥰
Love the use of Ninas Tekken 3 theme! Always loved hitting practice mode for hours with her purple outfit as a young boy ;)
Naughty Dog= ''Ah screw it, who in their right minds would jump for over 200 times on a single box and pull off all these complicated shenanigans?''
Speedrunners= > : )
I still love the Crash Games especially 1 - 3 and CTR!
Had so many good many memories when I was a young kid. ❤️
Really enjoy these videos!
one of my favourite CZcamsrs talking about one of my favourite games. :DD
I really like your channel! Very glad I found it. I deff subbed! I love all the video game content.
Another excellent video Ricky, you have a wealth of playstation speedrunning knowledge, thanks for sharing it.
1:50 the right face texture of the steel bounce crate on the right side drives me nuts. It's like it's split in the middle horizontally and flipped incorrectly. I've noticed it happens to the bouncing wumpa crates too, but only when you play on an emulator in hi-res.
That's an actual error with the textures on the iron arrow boxes. Blame Naughty Dog.
The fruit box stuff is just bad emulation though yeah.
I never cared about speedruns or these games but you really know how to make these interesting
You could've stopped at the slim sponsor segment and this video would've still been 100% worth the watch.
Fantastic segue for a fantastic video, keep it up Ricky!
That's awesome you've gotta love bugs that serious. To think how much time that must've saved them in programming I guess.
Solid video. I'm not big into Crash Bandicoot anymore, but this was entertaining information.
just asking, where do you get that background of the level at?
great video btw
been loving your work lately 💛
8:22 Holy shit never expected to see that legend here
This has been the only time Ever, that I have subscribed during a sponsor. Bloody genius using Slim cognito.
lmao that ad was 👌
Should've mentioned pirohiko's Crash 3 any% tas too. It makes the jumping really exciting.
I was thinking of doing so but really wanted to keep this video short for once. I always end up dragging stuff to 20-25 minutes if you let me and there's so much to unpack from his 5 minute TAS. I didn't want to mention it without explain it completely and breaking it down.
