- As concerns mount over the political climate in the United States, a significant number of Americans, particularly retirees, are accelerating their plans to move abroad. Marsha Scarbrough, an American expatriate dubbed "La Primera Exiliada," symbolizes this shift after relocating to Madrid following the 2016 U.S. Presidential Election.

Unfortunately, most Americans are conditioned to the high stress, hustle lifestyle. They live to work instead of working to live. Spain and most of Europe has a much lower cost of living, great healthcare, clean and safe public transportation, walkable cities, healthy food, safe schools and good climates- no hurricanes, tornadoes and blizzards. Be thankful you got out and are living a great life in retirement. 😊
I am thankful every day.
You are right. The great hockey player jaromir jagr was once asked after spending most of his career in the US was once asked what's the difference between Americans and Europeans? He said it seems to me Americans live to work and Europeans work to live. How interesting.
Marsha, your spirit and joie de vivre are infectious. Thank you for sharing your story with us!!
This is such a beautiful and heartfelt story. Thank you for sharing🇨🇦
After finishing my culinary internship in Barcelona in Oct 2016, I had to leave the Schengen zone, so I went to Romania. On election day, I went to bed believing Clinton would win so I was shocked to wake up to find Trump won. I kept traveling but returned to the US and stayed through the pandemic. Now age 63, I have my own business but plan to retire to Europe soon. Not only due to politics but everything else you mentioned - guns, crime, inflation, weather, etc…and just because life is better elsewhere.
I want to be you when I grow up! You’re an inspiration!
Thank you.
My grandfather worked overseas for 10 years in the 70s he lived all over Europe as he was an engineer putting in rolling mills for blawnox. Of all the places he lived he always talked about spain
Marsha you are one of the folks in our age group that has inspired me to move to Lisbon this fall to live the best life I can for the remainders of my days. I'm leaving the US for various reasons including some you have mentioned. I hope I can also inspire others. 🥰
Hey Marsha! So nice to see you again. I hope you are doing well. This is a great video and they have been missed. Is this a remix with new footage?
Thank you. I am well. Yes, the first part is new and the second half is about two years old.
I prefer the European life style. I want to spend a lot of time there when I retire.
I loved hearing Marsha's story --- what a super way to recover from the housing crisis and the political conflicts in the USA :)
We are hoping to retire early to France for some of the similar reasons. We're in NW Oregon, but we are tired of the devolving culture and insanity. There is more to life and we are tired of the myopia.
This was super helpful and informative thank you so much!
What an inspiration!
Thanks.
Fantastic video, thanks for sharing your story and life Marsha!
Thank you, Marsha, for sharing your story. And congratulations. I have travel quite a bit throughout Spain and had considered retiring there. But the tax situation on pensions and investments has forced me to look elsewhere. And I'm still looking. How did you manage if you don't mind sharing. Thank you!
Sweet! Not looking at Spain but so happy this lady found her piece of retirement happiness there!
As a fellow US citizen that lives in the spain, I hope that this person knows (and other US persons abroad) that you can still vote in US elections. One may be able to move away, but we will never completely escape these issues. As good global citizens, it is our responsibility to vote. Vote from Abroad is a great group of volunteers that help US citizens request their ballots and offer advice on how to return their complete ballots successfully. Voting abroad is different than voting absentee in the US.
Of course, I vote.
Wow, congratulations 🎈 I’m looking for a change too in my final chapter. Yes, focus on being happy!
She makes a lot of good points. Glad she’s found a place where she’s safe & happy 😃
What a great story. I love her spirt and attitude.♥
You should come back. America is such a wonderful place now. Especially LA
Absolutely. LA, like SanFran, are prime examples of woke sh&tholes. MAGA!
Nope.
Funny
What? Did the MAGA goons disappear? Is it safe for black people to interact with cops without being killed? Are all the homeless encampments been replaced by clean, decent affordable public housing? Have they melted down the 400 million guns, or at least stopped selling guns to anybody with money?
Great to see Marsha back! ❤
Thanks
Dear Martha. It’s awesome how you chose to live in Spain. ❤❤❤
What a Sad story.
what is really sad is this. you do not see how the most of the world sees trump and american now...that is what you need to be sad about
So, I watched the first 7 minutes of the video. She didn't leave the US necessarily because of Trump; she had planned to leave for Spain even before Trump announced he was running because of her financial situation as a retired person. I applaud her. And for all those MAGA haters out there, just be aware that you can't count on Social Security to make ends meet after you retire if you plan to stay in the USA. And your friend Trump won't help you.
Biden and the Dems are spending whatever we would have expected to get in retirement from SS on faux wars that don't pertain to us, so not exactly like ANY politicians are "helping" the average American.
I don't have a problem with social security being privatised, just give me what I have paid in and allow me to invest it. I don't want or need the government managing my money.
I find Marcia’s story inspiring, and you probably shouldn’t have made it about Trump because you invited all the hateful comments. ☹️
True but also all of the negative comments are simply proving her point that this is how toxic it is and why she left.
I just didn’t expect to read such ugly comments on a channel that celebrates immersing oneself in another culture and seeking a better quality of life outside the US.
Unfortunately the only point it proves is that Trump-haters are just not capable of keeping their political opinion to themselves.
well a few people do not care and dare people to bring it...hi my name is few lol

So you obviously didn't like low gas prices, low mortgage rates, low inflation and no wars. I hope more like minded people follow your "leadership"
Brian, fill your tank, pay your loans, eat your fast food, and romanticize the past all you want to ok but as a veteran, I'll ask you to kindly stfu about "no wars." God bless your ass, patriot. Wish I could give you a tissue for your tears as you cry about your not just one dollar burgers. So sad.
USA has been at war 93% of it's existence. Over 40K people die every year from gun violence. Robberies and burglary is out of control. More and more becoming homeless every year and living in cars or in tents. What a country.
Trump inherited a very good economy from Obama and Trump left an awful economy for Biden. Biden has done an excellent job of bringing us out of the economic mess that the pandemic caused. We have very high employment and the economy is poised for a soft landing. Inflation would be uncontrollable now if Trump had won in 2020 instead of 3% as it is now because Trump would have bullied the fed into keeping interest rates low.
@@MyGrandfathersGranddaughter😂
@@Kretch54you obviously have no understanding of basic economics. Far too many Americans judge a president based on what the price of gas is right now. It must be terrible to live in a perpetual state of ignorance and to have to worry about gas being more than $3 a gallon.
Timely video for the 2024 election. Great to hear you found a great place to live without all of the MAGA negativity in the US.
Gonna have to leave here soon because of Biden. The bidenomics situation is killing us americans 😢😢😢
I'd move to the USA because of Trump. But, each to their own. I was happy to leave a left wing leaning state in Australia and move to Malaysia.
I may do the same thing if trump wins this year! But probably Thailand. Help me find out how I can get the recognition you got!
Start packing your bags.
i was thinking there or vietnam as well but the hot weather and poor air quality is giving me doubts.
@@SilverTurtle65 there's no chance he wins from jail so I guess I'm stuck in this God forsaken country
@@jellycream1964 Ahh! so you agree that the only way to stop him from winning is to put him in jail. Sounds like we are living in a banana republic under Biden.
How sad a life someone must have lived to crave the attention of strangers.
Trump 2024!🇺🇸
Fuk trump! 🖕 great video! Leaving third world Murica in the next couple of years already have my EU citizenship, and so does my son! He's already sold everything and moved moved to Barcelona! ❤

Good, stay gone.
