  • Back in early December, I joined NA Community Managers Boggzy and Ahskance for a bit of time on the official World of Warships stream to talk through the basics of playing some of the German cruiser line. The result turned out pretty well, but we didn't cover the odd-numbered ships at the top of the line. As such, I've created this video for Tier VII's Yorck from scratch.
    00:00 - Intro
    00:08 - Meet Yorck
    00:47 - Light Cruisers v. Heavy Cruisers
    02:26 - Understanding Armor Thresholds
    04:25 - Main Battery
    07:43 - Survivability
    08:11 - Armor Scheme
    09:11 - Torpedoes
    09:53 - AA Defenses
    11:06 - Maneuverability & Concealment
    14:47 - Upgrades & Consumables
    17:12 - Commander Skills
    21:43 - Sample Gameplay
    Yorck is the first heavy cruiser in the German line, which necessitates a radical shift in how captains approach a game compared to all of the ships they've played in the line up to this point. She is far more resilient to incoming fire than Nürnberg, but her main battery reloads twice as slowly. Accordingly, she has to be a lot more cautious in the early parts of a game where the positions of the enemy battleships aren't fully known. In this video I'll talk about how I build my Yorck, why I fit her out that way, how I recommend playing her, and follow all of that up with a game demonstrating the ship in action.
    Enjoy!

    Thanks again for this series. Videos about how to play will not get much traction, they never have. But the few, the proud, the willing to at least try to dig themselves out of the potato patch, very much appreciate your effort.

    Those would then be an upgrade of the armoured cruiser SMS Bluchers guns. Yorck and Weimar are built on the same hull; the hull and superstructures reminds me a lot of the first KM cruiser built after WWI, the Emden.

    When I started this game I had one thing on my mind, I want to get my hands on a Bismark, little did I know that german BBs are terrible artillery pieces, and with the soon to follow secondary nerf I hated playing german BBs, so I switched to cruisers and it was the best decision I could've made, the german cruisers are so fun to play. I currently have Hindenburg and I struggle to do less that 100k damage each match

    • @SeaRaptor
      @SeaRaptor  Před 7 měsíci

      I love the German cruiser branch. They sometimes feel like they haven't aged well as BB guns get bigger and bigger - and the relative value of their armor schemes is less and less - but they're still great ships with great guns and a lot going for them.

    • @SeaRaptor
      @SeaRaptor  Před 2 lety

      If your guns are already loaded and you want to swap ammunition types, then you double press the appropriate key and the gun reload cycle starts anew at full duration (say, 12 seconds for many of these German heavy cruisers). Gun Feeder reduces this by 50%, so you can change ammunition types on the fly faster. It is very useful if you are engaging a target with HE who then opts to make a turn you weren't expecting; you can swap to AP and punish him faster than you could otherwise. For heavy cruisers, it's a great skill IMHO.

    • @SeaRaptor

      Yeah, most of the T7 cruisers can easily be ground through Narai. It's particularly useful for weaker ones (like Eendracht).

    • @SeaRaptor
      @SeaRaptor  Před 2 měsíci

      Glad it was helpful! Yorck only has access to Patrol Fighter, and honestly it's kind of crap. They're meant to help intercept carrier planes that are attacking you, but don't work all that often.

    • @plebius
      @plebius Před 6 měsíci

      Since no one answered, I will give you my opinion. No, it's very good and spamming from distance and using throttle to avoid incoming fire. You don't want to be engaging at close range unless you absolutely have too. She is good at kiting and it presents a very small target when seen from the rear. Having the aiming device means more of your shells will hit their target. Her ideal situation is camped behind an island near a cap, but don't play this style until you have concealment on your captain. As getting there is extremely rough if you don't have concealment. Don't be aggressive early game ... learned that one the hard way
    After several hours with the German line, along with other more nimble cruisers I felt pretty confident in my ability to dodge shells, or at least angle enough to take little damage .....
    Yorck is a different beast entirely ... there is a non insignificant chance, regardless of your angling, dodging, etc a single battleship shell will instantly delete you.
    I try to avoid playing aggressively, while also aiding my team, I always seem to get caught whenever my flank collapses, or folks just start turning out hard to kite .. I know the second I turn in I will be deleted .. can't show anything with this ship, and even than nothing is still too much ...

    • @garbagecan6969
      @garbagecan6969 Před 11 měsíci

      the best way to play Yorck is to flank and sneak up on your target then face your bows directly at them and charge, the AP shells will quickly grind down most ships to nothing, even battleships in that tier aren't safe, just using the front guns will be more than sufficient at point blank.
      I've destroyed at least 3 Hipper class T8 cruisers by singling them out on the edge of the map, the faster firing rate on those big guns will trump the higher tier long range guns every time, its the same formula that makes the T5 Bayern class BB so good

      Yorck's HE has always been good; in fact, it remains the best HE of any German cruiser in the tech tree. Her AP has undergone some changes over the years. When she initially launched, Yorck used some kind of ancient World War I AP shell that lost tremendous velocity - and thus, penetration value - past about 10km. The shell was unusable at range. Somewhere in the past couple of years WG made some corrections and Yorck's AP is now effective at all ranges, similar to how the subsequent ships in the line work.

    I like Hipper better. . . But I will take a Yorck in a Tier IX game over a Hipper in a Tier X game anytime. In the real world the difference between 205mm and 210 mm would be insignificant. But it seems to make a difference. I haven’t made an actual study, but it seems like armor and penetration schemes have been built around controlling impact of the the standard 8” heavy cruiser gun, which may be why the slightly higher caliber is more effective.

    • @garbagecan6969
      @garbagecan6969 Před 11 měsíci

      the hipper is not as good as Yorck imo, the health increase is nice but aside from that its worse in every other way, its harder to maneuver, its a huge target, bad concealment, slower firing guns in exchange for a little extra damage and range, its almost a downgrade. I still like the Hipper class because it looks good but it doesn't offer much compared to what the Yorck can do at T7

    Sorry but the main thing I disagree with is the start of the match. Not pushing up and supporting your dd is a massive mistake imo. If your dd dies on you flank, you usually lose it. If they trade its still a 50/50. There is a big difference between shooting a dd at 15km or 10km with the amount of shells that will land. The amount of games I have won a flank by blasting a unsuspecting dd by pushing up hard at the start behind that island or any island. This applies at every level. From tier 4 to tier 10. Especially in the current meta where one cr is the norm on a flank. So a cruiser not pushing up with the dd, can sign the death note if the enemy cruiser does. Edited to fix spelling

    • @SeaRaptor
      @SeaRaptor  Před 6 měsíci

      If I were in a light cruiser or a radar heavy cruiser, I would probably agree with you. In something like a Baltimore - 10km detection and 10km radar - that kind of play makes sense. In a ship like Yorck or Hipper - 12km detection on 5.5 or 6km hydro - it's likely a death sentence for the cruiser player.
      I play a lot of destroyer, enough to know that there are risks you can and can't take early in a game depending on your matchmaking. A lot of destroyer players in the modern game struggle to learn that lesson, or simply refuse to learn it altogether and barrel into caps when they shouldn't. A good cruiser player behind them often won't make the difference in an early cap, but a live cruiser later in the game can frequently have a big impact.
      It's true for destroyers and for cruisers: never trade your ship for a capture zone (in like 99% of situations).

    Yorck is hands down the best ship in the game, nobody expects that much out of it which is what makes it so good. My whole team had died on me and it was either 1v2 or 1v3 and it completely destroyed everything, there was only one ship left and everyone was calling me stupid for chasing it down instead of holding our advantage, but I didn't really care if we won or not and just wanted to play stupid hard. I headed towards middle map and peered around the corner, sitting in-between 3 large rocks was same tier Japanese or American battleship with over half health sailing between the rocks and decided to go full speed at it, those 200mm guns devastated a slightly angled battleship point blank range with just the forward guns firing AP i won the match with a Kraken, I had like a quarter health left did not expect to survive, best game I ever played, overpowered ship in my opinion
