    I am somewhat of a minimalist. Here is a downside- when people buy me things I dont want them. Unless it’s something I picked out for myself it’s probably not something I want. Clothes, furniture, decorations, etc… unless I hand picked it and it’s made to last to me it’s basically junk.

    I am a child of a hoarder and as a result, I am rather OCD about cleaning and organizing. I also think that when you grow up in extreme conditions, you tend to follow the same path or run the other way. I like how much money we save by being more intentional. We have no debt whatsoever, even though our budget for our family of 5 is barely over poverty level. My mom's storage unit to hold what doesn't fit in her 2500+ square foot house, two garages and shed is more than a week's worth of largely organic and specialty foods for my family. I'd much rather live well than pay to store items I haven't even looked at in decades. You are so right about the cleaning too! I can dust and vacuum my entire house in about half an hour and it took me an entire day to do my mom's living room. I think some people think minimalism means you have to live like a monk, like your intro, but real life minimalism means you have room for all of the things you really love and nothing else hindering your life. Love your videos, thought-provoking and yet still entertaining, the best of both worlds.

    I’m a new subscriber. Thanks for this! My parents have passed away and I inherited a houseful and two storage buildings full of their 60 plus years of belongings. It’s been so stressful for me; grieving on top of the overwhelming experience of the “stuff” … I’m seeking peace at this stage in my life. It’s so very hard, the guilt of knowing I have to let go of the items with so many memories attached to them. This morning I had a thought that entered my mind: hold on the the memories. Let go of the stuff! With the help of videos like this I am ready to begin the process. So thank you for these videos!

      I feel the same way. My dad died a year ago (mom died 20 years ago) and I didn't want anything in their house. I was made to feel guilty for not wanting anything. I ended up taking a few decorative items of my mom and they are displayed in my home. But instead of bringing me happiness I think it's depressing because it's a reminder that they are both now gone. I'm thinking of taking them down, packing them up and storing them. For some reason I can't give them away yet I just don't want to display them either.

    Really good video! I would recommend one more tip, find some friends who have the same mindset as yourself so you are always surrounded by people just like you and who have the same goals in life! Stay away (as much as possible) from people who only value things...

    • @ChantaltheFrency
      @ChantaltheFrency Před 2 lety

      @Dave true what you say! very true! but I was actually trying to refer to people who use people as they should use stuff. Shallow and just around to use others. Of course you can have people with a different mindset in your life if they have a good heart they are true to you but avoid people who use people our their friends as they use their goods. Who replace you in a blink of an eye. So sorround yourself with people who think like you and maybe learn from you about concept "consumption" (and you from them). Minimalism is different for everybody and it's good that you can introduce people to your lifestyle/ vieuw maybe they can pick up ingredients to apply in their life too (and vise versa). I just wanted to say sorround yourself with people who are worth it! Hope it makes sense. I do my best to write in English although I speak French. Sometime I can not literally translate what I try to say from French to English, I only have basic vocabulary😅 but I try... Have a nice day.

    I agree with everything you have said in this one.
    I've been on a serious decluttering journey since my oldest four children have married and left home. I still have two teens at home. I've always been very tidy and organised but after the older four children left home there was a lot of extra stuff that I didn't need anymore. Also nearing the end of my home schooling journey I've sold and given away so many books and resources. This year I emptied four large bookshelves and sold them all recently. Extra beds, desks, bedding, filing cabinet, bookshelves, exercise equipment all sold! I've also thrown away a lot of extra things I just didn't need or use like odd plates, cups, etc. my kitchen is streamlined now and I love it. I love that there is less to clean and dust. I love the extra space and I love the mental freedom this has given. Love your videos! 👍😀❤️

I think this is the thing that holds back a lot of people, they dont address the problem or the root cause of their hoarding. Now i only have a few pairs that goes with almost everything and i love all of them and everytime i use them, i feel confident knowing that i have a great pair on my feet instead of constantly thinking if i wore the best pair in my closet when i had lots of them.

    "Your Money or Your Life" was a book in the 1990s by Dominguez/Robin that started me on minimalism (called "voluntary simplicty" then). They said it's easier to save $100 than to get a $100 raise but the result is the same. Their goal was to retire and be full-time volunteers. This dovetails with your ideas in the 3:22 chapter.

    This is great. Thanks for sharing. Looks peaceful. I think it is not so much about the minimalism and more about how intentional you have become. You're taking the time to consider what you like and what things you need. You intentionally choose what surrounds you and what to keep out and you live by what you believe in, intentionally. That is a breath of fresh air.

    completely agree! you know what is like to live in a crowded house with 3 kids, i realized many years ago that the more toys and nonesense things i bought for them they end into trash one way or the other, i stopped buying a lot of things we really dont need . For isntance. Xmas presents are things they really need (computer devices etc) I noticed i really love having more space at home, instead of spending hours cleaning.. good video! Saludos de Perú ;)

    I'm Indonesian. I love learning about the minimalist lifestyle. because there are also many minimalists from abroad with their respective languages, it is very helpful if the video is accompanied by practice according to what is told. So even though I'm not very good at English, for example, I understand what they mean in this video because I'm watching how they practice. This video from Gabe Bult really helped me.... Thank you friend....

    My slogan that I came up with to help myself is "less to do is good for you". And "less mess, less stress" is the same! 😂❤️Both true both good reminders 💕 I came into the situation this week actually where I didn't have enough clothes to get dressed properly! I have been decluttering a lot the past two years and always getting rid of stuff that dosent fit and or are broken: but I didn't take the the time to replace certain things and all of a sudden I didn't have enough! It was amazing experience ❤️😀I actually had to go shopping out of pure need that's hardly ever happened in the past 💕 when I brought the new things home I of course had to go through my wardrobe and of course I found even more items that had to go 😂😂😂❤️ I love it. I have full overview and it's easy to get dressed 💕💕💕💕

    The big benefit for me is teaching my older son about decluttering toys (he is 5 yo). We do it every time before birthday, Christmas, Easter...and a few random times during the year. Before new toys come, some of the old ones go to charity. He is very good at that, he declutters his toys in a minute, and I've never seen him being sad about any toy he decluttered. I am doing the same with the younger one now (2.5 yo). The mess in their room is never too big, it can be tidied in 5 mins 👌

    Excellent video!!! Thank you so much. I am a new subscriber. I have done this in the past and it was exhilarating, it gave me such a feeling of freedom and less stress. But when my wife passed away in 2016 I stored away lots of stuff from our home, and now I just finally got rid of my storage room, which I had for 42 months, for $110 month, what a waste of money, you are so right. It cost me $4,620 to only find out the vast majority of this stuff was junk. I did sell some of it and I am going through the rest of it now, but WOW, what a waste of money. Keep up the great work Gabe. I will watch all of your videos. Thank you!!! PS I shared this on my Facebook page as well. Your video is very insightful...

    Excellent video. With living in a small studio apartment for over ten years I got to the point where I don't have room to bring anything thing home unless I get rid of something. I started getting rid of stuff, it is a good feeling, I have gotten rid of stuff on Craig List and have made money so it makes it easier to get rid of stuff. The only thing I miss is buying vintage record albums, but I have almost 400 albums that I bought in the last 3 or 4 years. I'm going to make reel to reel tapes and get rid of the records I can make some money off of them. I have my Lionel trains set up in a large figure eight track that the trains are from the early 1950,s it looks so cool with all the lights. I could probably get the most for it around the Christmas time. I sold a train set a few years ago, the people who bought it, it was for their 92 year old Mom that was in a nursing home. Bet she would be the most popular lady with all the old men. It made me feel good knowing it was going to bring joy to her at the last stages of her life!

    Can't agree more. I started listing things on ebay or donating them to Ebay. The feeling I get when I see a small pile of things that I am about to ship off or donate is incredibly liberating. The thought that I won't have to think about it again and that the space it took up will now be free. I still have a mountain, but I've been chipping away at it for months.
