  • Just a little over a year after buying My 2023 Tesla Model 3 Performance, I decided to sell it. Mainly was because of the rapid increase of EV adoption causing issues with charging. Also the frequent price fluctuations made the EV market very unstable. I would rather sell the car while I can afford to get out of rather than when I can't.     It didn't work for you - you don't really need to explain yourself. You have a long commute, and you were on call and had to go back and forth. The fact that you had to sit and wait for superchargers would have ended it right there for me. I would never wait for a DC fast charger. For now, my EV works for me as a daily.

      In the first few months I never utilized the supercharger and it was great but things got busier and sadly I’ve been aquatinted with them.

    You have a home charger. Just charge it to 90% or whatever. You're overthinking this whole thing. If you're sweating $50-$100 monthly swing because of peak v. low demand rates, maybe you need to budget your cash flow better. Truly 1st world probs. The real reason why he sold it is because it's no longer the latest, coolest thing. Rat race life. He's gonna buy another EV or another mass produced car and go thru this whole money dumping cycle again and again and again.

      I don’t think I was clear in the video. The range wasn’t enough for me for my usage. A comparable gasoline car could easily achieve 300 miles. The Tesla is barely hitting 160.
      I like it and I went back and forth for a while. This is my daily driver so I’m less concerned with having that be the “lastest and greatest”
      What I desire is range, performance, engagement. It didn’t lack in the acceleration department but I never enjoyed driving the car either.

    I agree with you on your range and charging perspective. I drive 200 miles to and from work once a week. I purchased a 2023 Model 3 LR with an epa of 358 miles which I knew I would never get. I drive 70 miles per hour on the freeway on cruise control consistently to maximize range. In the beginning I could make it to work 187 miles from my house without needing to stop and charge. Only after one year of ownership, my battery degraded 14% and now I only get an epa of 320 miles on a full charge. So now I have to stop about halfway and sit on a Supercharger for about 5 mins to add enough charge to get to work.
    So just like you, my needs are unique, and I quickly learned the EV battery technology of Teslas is not enough for me. The build quality of Tesla cars also need work. So in closing, I think you made the right call and sold your Tesla, it's your money and you don't have to justify your decision. I'm going keep my Tesla as I'm underwater on my car loan and pay it off. Once it's paid off, I will make a decision regarding if I will get another Tesla or go with another EV brand.

    Suspension and brakes are improved by a lot on the new model 3. I do agree the old model 3 needs good coilovers, chassis is there just suspension wasn’t tuned to its potential.

    Yeah, these things depreciate pretty hard, especially when a new facelift model is released like in 2024. The general clienttell of these cars will always want the latest model, so older ones will continue to plummet

    Such a shame you didn't get to experience the 2024 M3P. It addresses a lot of the issues you raise such as handling. We came from a 2019 performance so know what you mean about the handling letting you done vs the speed. They've pretty much solved that and its great around twisty roads and the acceleration is actually even more impressive than the older model. Try and get a ride in one and you'll be impressed. Also braking? One pedal driving works for me , barely touch the brakes unless suddenly need to stop or maybe if you were tracking it

    Im in the same boat with my m3p and recently had to give it to the wife and get myself a gas car. I do over 100 miles a day and would dread having to do supercharging sessions of 45-50 min every other day (no home charger). Highway driving on an ev + no home charger = no fun

    I have had my M3P for just over a year and i have driven more than 25k miles this is the first car in my life which i drive the most because it is so cheap to run and charging has cost me just £110 after using 7200kWh. I drive hard most of the time as it costs me nothing. Nothing to concern about depreciation as i bought it 3 years old for half the price of MSRP. Added real carbon fibre parts and it looks nothing like any other Tesla on the road.

    You articulated in this video exactly how I feel about Tesla. I bought many Teslas since 2016 and now I'm over it. Back to BMW.

    I think you made the right choice. I went through something similar with my ‘21 Type R. It was fun to drive and mod but damn am I happy that I got rid of it. 😂. I’m holding out on EVs because of videos like this. Keep up the great content!

    i bought mine a month before you and i agree with every point this is something that is hard to see when coming from lower end cars. Unfortunately i just truly drive too much and cannot justify the "loss" i would take by selling it right now but have the money saved up for the next car when its time, im 50k miles in, 1 year later every complaint you had i 100% agree

    Order the ‘24 M3P. Major upgrades and value for $55k😂 But still wouldn’t solve your charging/work schedule issues ☹️

    My 22 model trade in for 23 was the same as the trade in for a 23 now… Should’ve done your research bro. Every year after the pandemic it’s been dropping. Not just from 2023 to 2024. Tesla isn’t being selfish, their motto is affordable EV. They will always try to drop their price. You talk about msrp but most dealerships don’t sell you a car at msrp. Let’s say if you’re trying to purchase a corvette or even a civic type r. They don’t depreciate as much because there’s dealerships involve. Tesla will be wide spread since Tesla is doing really well. I don’t mind seeing other people with teslas because it’s such a great car and everyone should experience it. You buy an EV, don’t expect to make money of of it. Just because the whole world is trying to make them more affordable for mass market.

    You clearly make a lot of money and good for you, but trying to charge off peak hours while you knew you might need the car any second is ridiculous. You have spend hundreds of thousand on cars too but wont spend $20 more a month to have the convenience to use your car anytime you want? That's splitting hair. I mean if you had to use your corvette or BMW for your commute what was gonna be the MPG of those 2 cars? 15? 20? Bay Area traffic is insane, if you get stuck on BB you would spend way more money than charging your Tesla during peak hours. If you have to go to work 2-3 times per day, the BMW would cost you more than $70/day? Best case is $300 a week. Glad you're saving some money charging off peak.
    Tesla had to increase the price of their cars during that time because the demand was too high and supply wasn't great. Tesla was one of the manufacturers that was producing their own chips and hence sell cars. That was the reason of the price increase, supply and demand, even toyota at that time, a Rav4 Prime cost like 50k and it used to come with dealer markup of 10-15k back then, because why? -- there was no supply. A TOYOTA with 10 year old tech. You have to remember that Tesla is a business too, they didn't increase the price to mess with their customers. You knew the price of the car at that time, the interest, you had the money and you bought the car. A year later the demand slowed down because of the interest rates and they had to bring prices down again, on top of that a new model was released which lowered the price of your model 3 even more. On top of that the Hertz thing happened, which Tesla had no control over. This has to do more with the economy than your car, which is arguably the best commute car (not the performance model) out there if commute is less than 150 miles. It's probably the best car ever made in that price range. Tech, performance, comfort, efficiency. 2024 Tesla model 3 long range 40k. Toyota Camry Hybrid XSE 39k.
    The new Model 3 won't depreciate like the old one, because of the reason above ⬆ + High APR won't flood the marked with the new one. You don't see too many new ones in the bay do you?
    The performance model was plenty to do your commute if you had done it right. Personally if I had your income I would have plugged that thing any chance I get! No to mention you have solar and a power wall. There's probably no better car for your commute 😆If you had bough the long range or put smaller wheels you would have gotten another 30-40 miles of range than the M3P has.
    It comes down to money, you can afford to sell your M3 and buy a different car and good for you.

    There needs to be an entire infrastructure upgrade before EVs can be more widely adopted in this country. EV charging is one of our biggest hurdles, but that’s not the only one. EVs are fast, but they’re still not as fun to drive as a lot of comparable ICE cars. You have to really be committed to own one, and most people just aren’t.

      Geezus. You havent driven a Model 3 Peformance 2024 have you. Insane fun. Fastest car I've ever been in 0-60 in under 3 seconds. Way more fun than any ICE car I've ever been in. They're all slow even the fast ones don't have instant acceleration with max power always available. They're not even in the same ballpark

    I remember i rented a model y off turo, used it a lot and became good friends with the host. I would charge maybe once a day depending on what i all had to do and normally when i went to the charger it was mostly empty all the time. I remember one time that specific supercharger was down or what and it just wouldnt charge any cars so im at like 24% maybe and Im like coo I will just go to the next charger 12 mins. down the road well i wasnt the only one that had that idea and when i say i have never seen so many teslas in my life pulling up there to charge it was crazy!!. but long story short i got plugged in to charge with 7% left😭 never had anxiety until i got in a ev lol

    i agree with you, its not about the speed , coz people think oh wow just coz if the speed they tend to buy , i 2023 rwd and the suspension sucks ,back seat not good for road trips too bumpy ,dynamics is just a minor diffrence with the steering wheel.sometimes looses traction when driving at high speeds.,for me handling is very important and less body roll , the seats and the sterring should be hard enough to handle the corners ...i havent driven the new one ,but heard its good got adaptive suspension and sports seats are darn good for comfort ..and oh road noise coz mine does have ...the news ones have acoustics glass both front and back ....but one thing for sure is i have saved a ton of gas coz i have long commmute.thats the only plus point for me ..and selling at this point is not woth for me coz the price has drastically gone down..gonna drive tot he point where i have to replace the battery ..

    I do get it that you’re unsatisfied with the present trade-in value of your Tesla. You can be unsatisfied with paying for gas as well. Status wise, what you drive does not make you the man. So driving a Tesla is very much a personal aspiration more than anything else. Not having to pay for gas is major these days. Yes, you have to charge the car more than you like. Driving 50 miles one way every day is no easy task. If you get called back in and aren’t charged up enough, how frustrating that has to be. More Teslas are popping up. More car companies are producing reliable EVs. The price of the Model 3 can be purchased for less today. But, if you hold on to your Tesla, you’ll find yourself getting the results that you’re looking for. Yet, if you sold it, I hope that you find a greater ride😀👍🏾🛻!

    The issues I see here is going to be mostly the electric companies as in Socal we have the southern california edison which they don't charge as much for ev charging but they like to raise the monthly price if you don't have solar which is annoying. The another issue is that your area have a alarming rates of teslas compared to what I see in OC and IE as they are popular as there is a lot of superchargers but it seems like you have them much more up there compared to down here which I get it because you have crazy incentives for them up to $9,000 off on a used one which is wild but it is also bad, the other thing I will say is the people is also the issue as they hog the superchargers etc, another thing is that you bought the car at the wrong time which was the highest the model 3 has ever been yet in it's running history as even the highland model 3 without the tax credit is cheaper then the model 3 you did get, people did complained to tesla that they should reduce the price since it was to expensive for what it is. The other thing is the range is pretty good but the issue is that you have is that your constantly have to be ready for work at a moment notice which if the car not charging all the time it can be an issue which you have here, another thing is the resale value is not that great and I do get it since it is a older model 3 platform and that it hasn't really been upgraded much at all, and the rise of population of the car can lead to worst resale value. I am personally looking to buy the new highland model 3 since the legacy model 3 isn't really worth it at all imo lol. The will be gone but won't be missed, I think you should replace it with the bmw m340i x drive.

    Okay I can agree with you on the brakes not having much feel on initial use whenever you do have to actually apply the brakes and the constant price changes affecting the value for current customers. Although anybody with a brain knows all cars depreciate. The home charging issue you're having really is just a you problem. You're worried about on and off peak charging and thats causing an issue with the public charging infrustructure for you. I've had my 23MY for almost a year and have only used the SC's 4 times. Twice were because the wife just wanted the experience. Not once were the superchargers we went to ever crowded. I live in beaverton and have PGE and haven't noticed much of a change in my energy bill outside of seasonal change usage. People get tired of things all the time so there's no need blame issues you;re causing yourself. Just say you want to move on to something else because it doesn't work for you.

      The Tesla's depreciation is abnormal, and it's not acceptable for a manufacturer to manipulate the MSRP. My personal issues with the car are different from others - if my work hours or needs were different, the car would still be in the driveway. However, making 2-3 round trips to work in a 12 hour period and waiting for a charger is really frustrating. The superchargers near Concord near the Veranda are always packed, except during overnight hours. On top of that, my PGE rate went from 19 cents off-peak all the way up to 35 cents, and the peak summer rates climbed to 66 cents. With my schedule, it was either expensive daily charges for a buffer, or waiting until low rates and risking needing the car during that time.

      @eddiemcars maybe I'm not understanding why this is an issue to you because I purchased my vehicle with the intent of home charging being my primary source for charging. When I get home I plug in everyday and no issues. My energy bill with pge hasn't changed much since we purchased the car. Either way that's not a problem with Tesla that's still a you problem. As for the depreciation and msrp adjustments, Tesla has made changes both up and down to their pricing but I never heard anyone complain when the prices went up. Cars are depreciating assets and if you're buying one thinking you'll get your money back when selling then your sadly mistaken and made a bad financial decision. Would I buy another Tesla, probably not until some changes are made but I don't regret buying the one I have either.

    You obviously have money to burn - I say that with respect. You chose it, drove it for some time and done with it because that home appliance w/four wheels (or should I say a giant iPhone w/wheels) is not as satisfying as an ICE vehicle. You can't even diagnose a Tesla via port (like a traditional obd11). You are a car enthusiast, not a fanatic - which is a good thing because you are not a Tesla fan boy or hater. It's just too bad that the money spent on the Tesla, you could've made a better choice. You won't miss it for a second and no more wasting money on a borin-101 dummy car and all the stupid(trade-in values, not-so convenience perks,issues,etc) you have to deal with. First mistake anyone makes is thinking of it as a financial asset - especially EVs. The only vehicles that are are financial assets are a handful of collector vehicles that increase or at least holds their value as it sits and breaks down slowly - like Ferraris,Vipers,Porches, eventually your Corvette in the future,etc.You already have an attractive fleet of vehicles. If you choose a replacement for that Tesla, there are plent of other choices. Congrats on letting that Tesla go. Stay positive and I will certainly continue to watch your vlogs

    Sorry it didn’t work for you, plus you have a nice charging setup in your garage (gorgeous garage as a whole actually). Sounds like the main range issue was the a$$h0les at your job that hogged up the free charging for the entire shift, that would’ve eliminated your range issues. I’m not sure if I missed it, what did Tesla offer you for trade in?

      Thanks. I wanted to make it work but Tesla is like a gadget. Nobody wants last years technology. Prior to this, it didn't matter because Tesla was always up to date irrespective of which year you have.
      Tesla offered me $31,000 in April for a 2023 Tesla Model 3 Performance with 17,000 miles

      New model 3 is hugely improved, far from dead. Model 3/y is their most important car. I have 2018 model 3 with no build issues, actually far more reliable than any other car I’ve had.
