      At 59 I had knee issues. Getting up from the floor and stairs was tough. I gradually worked my way down to a 6 inch squat depth after doing partial reps for months. The partials still seemed to not help (maybe even hurt my knees) but full ROM ATG actually fixed my knees and now at age 66 I can do ATG goblet squats with over half my body weight.
      Zero knee issues!

    I lived in Japan for two years while stationed at Misawa AB; all the education I needed about squatting for longevity. It was a rural area, and every day you would see so-called elderly folks working the fields in a full squat - a position the average American (regardless of age) couldn't attain without a lot of effort, and maybe couldn't recover from. Also saw a fair share of traditional porcelain hole-in-the-ground toilets that required a full squat to use; traditional Japanese dining tables that were maybe a foot off the ground where meals were served ... a lifestyle that required mobility. Worth following.

    Years ago, I went into a pilates class for the first time. After my evaluation, the instructor asked me if I did ballet as a child (I could put my leg above my head but couldn't squat for the life of me) She said it was very common for adults that danced ballet as children to have hips flexibility and no ankle mobility. We try to work on that for about 2 years, but I never see the diference. 15 years laters, your videos found me on CZcams and after 2 months of some very basic exercises, I'm staring to see a difference. I'm 40 now, I've always workout, I still dance, I still do yoga (but no more pilates) and just NOW I'm understanding what it takes to work on my ankle mobility. Finally! Thank you!

I've found out squatting myself few years ago, still do them daily, no more back- and kneepain, but it will come back when I don't do them for a few days. Results came quick as well, after a week far less pain and it takes longer before it came back. • @SarahBartlett
      @SarahBartlett Před měsícem +1

      Have you tried split squats with your front foot elevated, taking the knee to full flexion? This is great for helping with hips and ankle mobility and knee stability 😊

    • @sanfransimo
      @sanfransimo Před měsícem

      @@SarahBartlett Thanks for the great suggestion. Bulgarian split squats are part of my regular routine. I will try switching the elevated foot to the front and incorporating that.
      More than anything, I was just countering the idea that minimalist or zero-drop footwear will do much (or anything) for regaining ankle dorsiflexion already lost. It's true that a primary limiting factor in ankle dorsiflexion is compromised foot strength and mobility, but nothing comes close to a deliberate exercise routine that targets those specific deficiencies and imbalances. Simply wearing Vivos isn't enough for many adults who already have problems.
      Unless the foot is substantially strengthened, the ankle and foot will always collapse before the Gastrocnemius, the Soleus, and the Achilles tendon loosen. For deep squat ankle dorsiflexion, the foot and ankle need to be strong enough to resist collapse in an increasingly acute range. Personally, I don't have that foot strength at that sharp angle. Re-gaining it once lost is an arduous endeavor.
      I'd further ad that for those with over pronation issues, trying to increase ankle dorsiflexion w/o first deliberately increasing foot/ankle strength can easily lead to even greater over pronation.

    • @SarahBartlett
      @SarahBartlett Před měsícem

      @@sanfransimo You are bang on my friend, and I very much agree that Vivo's will do little to correct and bring back lost range, if no progressively loaded corrective exercise is undertaken simultaneously. Training barefoot is best, if it is safe for one to do so. Personally, I find even barefoot shoes to be limiting. To have your actual body in contact with the ground is far and above the greatest for correct activation of the muscles of the foot and ankles. It enhances the body awareness significantly. Barefoot shoes are a FAR better option than most conventional training/running shoes however.
      As with any corrective exercise, working within and just to the limit of where you can maintain pain free loading with correct form is how it needs to be executed in order to work. So with this example, you would go to where the trainee can maintain foot alignment, and stop right where the begin to pronate. Bands can be a great tool for enhancing awareness and improving range of motion. You can add a lateral pull element to the split squat that helps with maintaining external rotation of the femur as you descend into the movement. Another great drill would be banded ankle dorsiflexion - where the band is anchored to a low point and you have one foot in the band facing away from the anchor point. The band sits right at the front of the ankle where it bends, and pulls on the tendons as you move into dorsiflexion to help stretch them out, which will help with increasing supination to hold alignment.
      Best of luck with the foot strengthening endeavours - it's a worthwhile venture as it will greatly improve your overall stability and strength!
      Look into the important of big toe mobility and big toe flexion in deep squat positions - I'd be prioritising that and barefoot unilateral deep flexion work if you were my client! Great chat :)
